Later this year I will be in the San Jose area and want to spend a day or
two in Monterey playing golf. Of course I would like to play Pebble Beach,
but I know there are several other great courses there too.

Does anyone have any info, e.g. green fees, times to play, discounts,
phone numbers, etc? I've heard that if you are staying there you get a
break on green fees and have an easier time getting on the courses.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Go for the big one. You'll have memories of Pebble Beach for years
after the (admittedly stiff) fee of $225 or whatever is replenished.

That's true, but spending $300 on a PB condo to get a $50 fee reduction
is somewhat false economy (though I'm told the rooms and service are
outstanding). It's also not that tough to get onto Pebble, Spyglass
or Spanish Bay.

Course Cost Phone
------ ---- -----

Pebble Beach $200 408 624 3811
Poppy Hills $90[1] 408 625 2035
Spanish Bay $135 800 654 9300
Spyglass Hill $150 800 654 9300

[1] Poppy Hills greens fees can be significantly reduced if you're
a guest of a NCGA member.

The four above courses are all within the 17-mile drive at Pebble Beach.
There is no finer golfing in the world, and any of these offer price-
performance superiority over most resort courses in Hawaii, Palm Springs,
and Las Vegas. (Elsewhere, too, I'd imagine.)

If you want to try elsewhere in the Monterey region, there is a number
of "second-tier" courses in the area, with less-demanding layouts,
less-famous names, less-luxurious accomodations (or none at all),
and less-daunting prices. These include:

Aptos Seascape (Aptos) $50 408 688 3254
Carmel Valley Ranch (Carmel) $95 408 626 2510
De Laveaga (Santa Cruz) $30 408 423 7214
Ford Ord (Fort Ord) [2] $60 408 242 3268
Laguna Seca (Monterey) $50 408 373 3701
Old Del Monte (Monterey) $45 408 373 2436
Pacific Grove (Pacific Grove) $23 408 648 3175
Pasatiempo (Santa Cruz) [3] $85 408 459 9169
Rancho Canada (Carmel) $60 408 624 0111
US Navy (Monterey) $15 408 373 8118

[2] I can never get a consensus on whether non-military can get out
onto Fort Ord. Same goes for US Navy.
[3] Entered on this list for the sake of completeness. Most assuredly
*not* a recommendation.

I've skipped the private courses, as getting on them without a member
takes an act of congress. I've also entered the most expensive fees;
if you play on weekdays, the costs will be noticeably lower.

Any other questions, let me know. Good luck!

I would highly recommend playing Spyglass Hills as well if you get the
chance. I have played both Pebble and Spyglass 3 times and actually
prefer Spyglass. Spyglass' only weakness are those two rather short
par 3's on the back.

Why is Pasatiempo *not* recommended. I haven't played there in a few
years, but it is also one of my all-time favorites. I heard they had
a little damage from the recent earthquake, but it it such a beautiful
and well-designed golf course. You don't get a chance to play too many
Alistair MacKenzie courses (unless you have friends who are members at
Augusta National or Cypress Point). Also, I heard that one of the
par 4's (#16??) was Alistair MacKenzie's favorite hole. That is amazing
when you consider #15 and #16 at Cypress and Amen's corner at Augusta.

BTW, Doesn't Torrey look nice on TV. All this stupid rain we've been
getting sure makes the course nice and green.

Because of the totally hostile attitude that is exhibited by the staff
toward non-Santa Cruz residents. I agree the course itself is dynamite,
but it's horrendously overpriced (even by local standards) for non-locals,
and the snotty demeanor of the pro shop staff is too much to tolerate,
especially with world-class facilities only 30 minutes and $50 away.

I fully agree with Michael Zimmers' enthusiasm about the Pebble Beach
courses. I entered a trip report of my outing at Poppy Hills two weeks
ago and still have lingering sweet memories of that round. As Michael
suggested, though, if you know anyone who golfs in the Monterey area
and is an NCGA member, the savings can be significant if you go as a
guest. I'm an NCGA member, and I can play Poppy for ony $42. ($40 for
greens fees and $2 to get in through the 17-mile drive entrance - save
your receipt for the $6 17-mile drive entrance fee and the Poppy Hills
Pro Shop will give you a $4 refund.) Best of success,

Fred

A little-known fact about the $6 entrance fee is that the receipt you
get is basically like money and can be applied toward any purchase from
any of the merchants of Del Monte Property. So, you can apply it to
your green fees, put it toward a round of cocktails, or as a [small]
down payment on a Talbot necktie.
