I'm the newest of new-comers to the sport I'm looking to buy a
starter set of clubs. I'll buy better clubs after I'm sure I REALLY like
the sport, and I'm good enough where I won't fear breaking them
accidently. I found sites that review individual clubs, but not starter
sets. Does anyone know of sites that do or know enough to give me advise
yourslef? I'm looking for the best match of quality and value. Are sets
the best way to start? Do I look at the Sports Authority type stores, or
the pro golf discount type places? Any/ all help would be great. I saw
the following sets at Sports Authority(Central New Jersey) today (all
sets 11 pc, 3 woods 8 irons):
Wilson Prostaff OS $300 US
Pro Kennex Black Ace $250
Wilson Percision $200
Pro Kennex Eternity $200
Pro Kennex Dominator $200
Pro Kennex CCB $180
Wilson Agressor $170
Knight Accuplus $160
Pro Kennex Destiny $130
Knight TFX $100

Go to a discount golf store and purchase yourself a used set of
blades. Pay a little bit extra and have them fitted to you. You can
get a nice set of Hogan blades for ~$100. After all is said and
done... bag, putter, a 3 wood, and the irons should cost around $450.
Less if you go for the bargain barrel putter and 3 wood.

Wow. That must be one expensive bag, then.

Hi, I just went through the same thing you did, so here's the way I went
about it. I talked to lots of people and read as much as I could find about
clubs. Here's a few sites I came across with tips:
http://www.golfstudionyc.com/golf%20tips.htm
http://www.swingweight.com/
http://www.learnaboutgolf.co.uk/Golf%20Beginners/Golf%20Beginners.htm
http://gearguide.golfweb.com/html.cgi?page=index.html

the first link has some brief but good tips.

I couldn't find ANY sites that review starter sets, or even low-price
individual clubs. I decided to buy used stainless steel cavity back and
medium flex steel shaft clubs, and for the same price as new ones, I got a
far better set. Maybe rent clubs if you haven't been bit by the golf bug?

Try www.gypsygolf.com

They've got great deals on used clubs.

Well, if I may jump in on this one.....
I've got the set of Wilson Prostaff O/S.
Not bad for a starter graphite set.
Lofts are strong, and the shafts are a little
generic (at least for me...)
I broke my 4 iron after about 6 months, and
I was able to get it replaced.
I also found a 3 iron of the same set. Quite nice.....

Just make sure they fit.

Consider Tommy Armour 845 SilverScots--best value in irons, short of
building your own clubs. They don't look that great, but they get the
job done. Armour keeps coming up with new models, but this one sells
too many every year for them to replace them. I think that they are
going to be selling a chrome-plated version soon, which should spiff
them up a little, if you care about that kind of thing.
