Does anyone feel that Top Flite Magna balls are any different from regular
balls? I was using normal spaling par 2 balls in a game and found a brand
new Top Flite Magna so started using it. The difference was amazing! My
drives instead of slicing 50 metres to the left as they usually do (I'm
left handed) went dead straight and much further than usual. So does this
affect anyone else.

I use the Magna ladies balls and find that they go straight all the
time. They do seem to go a little farther also.

i play the magna because they putt better.

magna's go straighter because they are slightly larger,
so there is less spin rate, also there are more dimples,
which allow ball to stay in air longer.
but a straight drive will allways go further than a hook or slice

my wife uses the lady magnas...they hit about the same as other ladies
balls for her...but she really likes how they putt.

One of the golf magazines tested the Magna against regular size balls
about 2 years ago. Conclusions:

1. For balls hit straight, the Magna has a tighter pattern (i.e. is
straighter)
2. For ball hit with a slice, the Magna slices more.

Since averages don't always apply to individuals, if it works, keep
doing it.

I'll buy that, as I lipped out quite a bit in my last round (g).

Aren't a number of tour players using the Magna?

They do go straighter. But a larger ball HAS TO lip out of the hole

slightly more often than a smaller ball will.

James, asked if the Top Flite Magna is different?----Yes, I think by now
we all know it's larger.
Richard - Wrote- Magna's go straighter because they are slightly
larger.------Nope, guess again.
Steve, asked- Aren't a number of tour players using the Magna.-----None
at this time. Two reasons.
1) The magna is a hard cover ball---Surlyn
no feel less spin rate.
2) Resistance and drag--- Throw a beach with side spin or back spin.
What happens? It breaks, A lot.----Throw a marble with a simular surface
with side spin, What happens? Relativly straight.
True --Modern dimple design, depth, and shape have helped to straighten
this ball out. But the smaller balls also have this technology.

Smaller = straighter & longer

I also use the Magna and love it. I refuse to strike anything else!

Magnas are different. I stopped using them because my yardages were
getting messed up. I would hit the same club 10 to 15 yards longerwith
the Magnas verses regular balls.

Do I have the Magna confused with the Strata perhaps? The ads I saw had
pros endorsing them. I thought that when you endorsed a product on the
tour, the client wanted you using it. I would.

hey,
this is right off the box, so I know its true:

Magna diameter is larger 1.72" vs. 1.68"
thicker zylin cover,
soft core for more feel in putting.
9 iron spin rate = 7800 vs.
10200 for z-balata
8200 for xl

guess again... :-0

I have no opinion regarding the Magna since I happen to already
be in love with Titleist Professionals.

However, I did put the dial caliper on one a while back and it
came out at around 1.76 inches, if I remember correctly.

The standard ball is 1.68 and the old "British" ball was 1.62.
Players felt very strongly about the differences in performance
between the two sizes.

There is a brief article on golf ball design in the most recent issue of Popular Mechanics. It quotes the chief engineer at Spalding as saying the best ball for the
average hacker, in his opinion, is the Magna: 1) it reduces spin and therefore
reduces slices and hooks, 2) more roll and therefore more distance, 3) it sits up higher due to its larger size, and 4) is less affected by green imperfections due to its larger size.

So I bought a sleeve and had a less than average round. But it wasn't the ball's fault.

I started using Top Flight Magna's because they were advertised as going
straighter. I'm not sure if it's because the ball is slightly bigger
but it seems to work. I used to have more of slice than I do now. I
even hit straighter at the range now so I'm sure it due more to the
swing and not the ball but I am attached to my Magna's.

Note these balls go straighter because they have lower spin.
Theoretically, larger balls will not go farther due to greater wind
resistance. However, you may feel more comfortable over a larger ball and
this confidence translates into a more comfortable relaxed swing and hence
more distance.
