I am going to Atlanta soon for work and was thinking of taking the sticks.
With the fees the airlines are charging anymore for oversized luggage like
golf clubs I was thinking of UPS or FedExing them down ahead of time. I
wondered if anyone had done this and how well it worked out. Was it cost
effective vs. checking them at the airline?

Not yet. But, I believe it might be a good idea. Send them from your
home to your hotel. Pay the up-charge for the insurance. My clubs would
take $3,000 to replace and it would take 3 to 4 weeks to get a new set
built.

Last time I had them as baggage they were 47.5 pounds with no extra
charge. My brother-in-laws were 56 bounds and he had to pay about $30
for his baggage being over-weight.
