Golfers,
Our group plays throughout the winter. We usually tee off around 09:30
and 10:00. As long as there is no frost on the greens they let us out.
In really cold weather, most of the guys ride, but some still walk.
Clothing in winter goes from stocking caps, gloves, and windbreakers
to wind suits. Almost everyone wears corduroy pants. Who knows what's
underneath. One guy admitted to wearing panty hose. Many of the guys
carry those hand warmers. The little packets that get hot when ya
squeeze them. I hate to think what's in the golf bag besides clubs.
I've seen everything from peppermint schnapps to I.W. Harper. Flavored
brandy, apricot, peach and blackberry, are a big favorite. The funny
thing is, not many handicaps go down during the winter. Do ya suppose
that peppermint schnapps is causing a miscalulation on the score card?

In real cold weather, I especially want to walk. Riding can get
cold.

But living in Colorado, it's not the temperature I watch. If it's
sunny in the winter, I'm comfortable, and we get a lot of sun.

Good for you guys. You've penned quite a wordy description of your
group's activities.

Wouldn't it have been easier to just post "We're twice as
uninteresting as the average golfer!"

Winter is golf season around here. The fair weather golfers stay home,
and real golfers get a chance to play.

I love to walk with half a set of clubs in my carrybag or with only one
club, hands tucked into the pockets.

Why not? I bought some singlets for my winter rounds. I used to wear my
walking boots until I bought some special Adidas winter boots recently
- very promising indeed!

Of course I have a personal weather limit: I don't like rain- or snowfall,
but I've been out at -5 Celsius (wearing only a sweater in sunshine).

Yes, I have some, too, but they won't last too long. More frequently I only
put two small towels into the pockets - it eliminates the need for golves
to a certain extent.

No booze for me except maybe during winter tournaments. Yes, one club
organises comps from January to March which are very popular for those
hardliners who don't accept an interruption in golf play. Those comps will
be played to winter greens or summer greens, depending on the weather,
and among other things we experienced puddles around the flags as well as
flags frozen into the cups ;->
BTW: Bring colored balls in case of snow on the fairways ;->

Quite frequently, someone will pay for a round of Ramazotti (1) in the bar,
and you'll see the occasional Flachmann (hip flask, lit. "flat man") on the
tees.

(1) Italian herbal schnapps

Apart from such imponderabilia, the players will be less flexible due to
chill and clothing, the balls will fly shorter, bounce, roll and putts may
be unpredictable - no good conditions for handicap improvements,
and those winter tournaments are declared non-counting.

BTW: Those who can afford time and money will escape to warmer regions:
Baleares or Canares in Spain, southern Portugal, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey,
Egypt, Dubai...

Daydreaming greets,

Paul

We just finished the last Men's club outing at my Men's Club. It was
postponed from last week because of a snow storm. I wore long pants,
which was a mistake, it was too warm for them. It's 67 F right now,
beautiful weather.
