Hello all,
I played a lot of golf (>= 50 rounds) over the past year. As a result
of that (atleast partially) the SKIN on the middle finger and the
index finget at the first joint (OF EACH FINGER) from the top hurts
really bad. The skin in that area is hardening and it hurts
(especially in the ring finger) a lot. I play right-handed and have
neutral grip on my right and somewhat strong grip with my left. My
guess is that the above is because of my small hands and fingers. I
use medium to medium-large cadet gloves depending upon the brand. I
measured from the apex of my middle finger to my wrist and it comes to
seven inches (insert your jokes here). Middle finger is just over 3
inches long. The grips I currently use on my Ben Hogan Apex Plus irons
are "standard" grips that came with the clubs. Evidently I need
smaller grips but have not been able to find any place that sells
smaller grips here in the Columbus, OH area. Does anyone suffer from
the above symptoms too? Can you help or provide any insight?
Thank You,
Kaushal

Take two aspirin and call in the morning.

Seriously, why don't you try the new Golf Pride 'Whisper' grips? They are
supposed to be good for this type of situation, from the product listings.
Can't comment on playability, though.

If you haven't changed grips in a while, you probably should, but
that may not be the only cause of your problem. It sounds like your
hands are slipping on your grip in those areas, and are rubbing
the skin off. You should have a pro check your grip and
swing to see if it is something obvious. Or you could just tape
your fingers.

Kaushal,
I have had a similar problem in the past that sometime sneaks back into the
picture when I get sloppy. I am a cadet size as well, only in the XL size.
While I can play
+1/32" over on grips, it doesn't do me any favors with my release so I
remain basically standard.
My remedy has been to put an extra wrap of tape under the right hand to
crack my right hand open a little. I also make a effort to make sure that,
with my overlap grip, that my right hand ring finger is not trapped too much
against the index finger of the left hand. When this happens I tend to grip
too much with the finger-tip and the area above the joint. This is more
pronounced in cooler weather as I tend to grip that little bit tighter to
feel the club when I 'm cold. This leads to twisting and a certain amount of
torque at the
first joint of the ring finger. This cause a separation in the my natural
callus that builds up in the area. After a while the split is very painful
and takes forever to heal. Typically when heading into a heavy playing
period a simple strip of tape around the joint holds all together as
preventative medicine.
Hope this helps-
Ed

In article <a7726bad.03030...@posting.google.com>,
kau...@kaushal.net says...

I don't play anywhere near as many rounds, and while I don't have pain,
I do have calluses. I recently switched to an overlapped grip instead of
an interlocking grip and I'm developing a callus on the first joint of
my right ring finger (towards the pinky). What kind of grip are you
using? Interlocking? Overlapping? Ten finger? Just my 2 cents, but I
doubt it has anything to do with the gloves. May not be grip size,
either, but rather the type of grip. When I used the interlocking, I
didn't have the calluses. Maybe you can try a new grip? Just a
suggestion.

I use an overlapping grip. I tried an interlocking grip. It does not
feel natural to me and my score suffers. I normally shoot in the low
to mid 80s.

Another possibility, Kaushal: don't grip so tightly. My hand is
about the same size as yours. I don't hold on very tightly, yet I
don't lose control of the club. I use cheapo grips -- Lamkin's -- and
have never had a problem. I do have one callus -- it's a small one,
on the second segment of my right hand ring finger, towards the middle
finger. Never bothers me, never splits, never hurts.
I use an interlocking grip.
The only time my hands bothered me at all was during the rainy season,
when my right hand (I'm right-handed, so that's the one without the
glove) was constantly wet and cold. I began using a right-hand glove,
and that took care of the problems. It might also have been a
function of whatever goop the course spread on the greens, as well;
I'm not sure. But keeping the right hand dry and warmer has sure made
a difference. And in warmer weather, I don't need that right-hand
glove.
See if using less pressure helps out.
HTH.

How long did you try it? Just about any change feels unnatural and our scores
suffer - until it feels natural and the old way feels unnatural.
