I just returned from one of the most wonderful weekends that I have ever
spent, and thought I would pass along the information. This past weekend I
attended one of the John Jacobs Golf Schools, this one at Painted Mountain
in Mesa, Arizona. I highly recommend this class for anyone that wants to
launch their game and their abilities to a whole new level of play. (See
http://www.golfweb.com/jacobs/ for a complete listing)

They have a number of different class arrangements, which vary by location.
In Mesa, they have two types. A 5 day class (but this one happens during
the week), and a two day weekend class which is actually designed to be a
refresher for the 5 day class. I took the "weekend" one to see what it was
all about. There are even packages that include hotel and food, or you can
also "commute" and not get the hotel.

The class has 5 hours of instruction each day. They started out with a
short lecture, covering "ball flight" and what causes the ball to go in any
direction when hit. Then class is split up into two groups, and you are
sent off to either the driving range or different areas for specialized
instruction.

We spent 45 minutes per session covering "full swing" with the 5-9 irons,
full swing with all the clubs, and specialized areas of: chipping, putting,
pitching, and sand bunker play. The best part is that their instruction
and techniques are very simple to understand and implement.

In the full swing class, the instructor evaluates and takes notes on your
swing, and then videotapes your swing for review. Then you take a break
and review the tape in slow motion. Then back to hitting the ball while
the instructor suggests changes to make.

The specialized clinics start with a quick 5-minute review of the
techniques that you should use to accomplish the skill being practiced.
Then you spend 40 minutes practicing under the guidance of the instructor.
This was particularly interesting hitting balls from the sand bunker.

At the end of the day, you can play golf for free. After the 5 hours of
instruction, we were excited to get out and try what we learned. I
understand that if you take the class during the week, the instructors join
you on the course for the first few holes. The first day we played a full
18 holes, but after the second day, we were only able to play 9 holes
before we died.

The information that was presented was all fantastic! I learned so much,
and improved dramatically. Classes can be very large, but the ratio is
always kept to a maximum of 5 students to every instructor. They recommend
that you wear two gloves, which I wished I had done, as I did develop a
blister. I heard from other students that the five-day could turn your
hands to "mince meat".

In two days, I eliminated a lot of the basic problems of my game, and
understand the fundamentals in a way that I never thought I could. I
highly recommend this to all of you!

Good review Richard. I started giving reviews on golf instructional tapes.
After reading much of the "information" given in r.s.g., I believe these
freelance reviews that people do periodically is one of the best
aspects of this group.

Cheers.

Richard, I heartily agree with you. What I found most interesting was
that the methodolgy teaches you to analyze your mistakes by watching
the flight of the ball. Thus, you don't feel the need to have a pro
at your elbow when you get home to tell you what you're doing wrong.
You become your very own pro!

They packed me off from an 18 handicap to an 11handicap in one season!
I plan to go back when I can fit it into the schedule and see if I can
reduce to a single digit. I also have the Jacobs custom fitted clubs
and after 6 years of playing with them, still love them.

Good on ya! I'm glad you enjoyed it also.

Dear Mr. RealSerf,
You are *more* than worthy. But really!! This video intrigues me.
I'm off now to call my local pirate to find the very same. I shall be
looking for your game. It IS golf, isn't it?

I am truly mortified at my mangling of Jack's name.

I would like to send the video (and the "P" logo item of my choice),
but where ?

Please email me, people are already complaining that I am bowing,

I formerly played tournament table tennis when I was young and
foolish. Now I am no longer young. Honestly, I believe the years I
spent on that refined my eye/hand skills to a point of greater
potential in golf.

Dear David,
We are speaking of those gentlemen with eye patches who sell
newspapers door to door & offer free videos for a one year
subscription.

You nasty little scamp. Stop e-mailing me this minute or I will have
to tell your mother! When I want to go to the Jacobs school, I will
go and nothing you mail me will make that moment come a minute sooner.

What you say above is simply untrue. Believe me, this chariot has
been around the block, so to speak, more than once & these dues & fees
CANNOT be deducted period! Especially on ladies' day!! One more
e-mail and you shall hear from my lawyer, and then from my accountant
who will educate you in the finer points of LEGAL deductions.
