What is the best computer Golf game out there today?
Jack Nicklaus is okay, but I think I prefer the playing attributes of
my old Links386 better.
I swear, there are some shots in JN that are just not possible to make
regardless of how many Mulligan's use to re-try.
For example, a moderately long putt in many instances simply does not
have enough "power" to reach the hole, and after a dozen or so Mulligan's
it becomes obvious that the only way to sink it, is to use some sort of
wacky 5 iron-chip shot combination on the green.
What's up with that?
At least in Links386, there is virtually no limit to the range of the putter,
as long as you hit it hard enough.
I can't recall if there were any greens longer that 150 feet, but in most cases
the putt never came up short due to lack of brute potential momentum!
Anyway, what's the best golf game right now?
Links
Microsoft
Jack Nicklaus 6
Are there others?
I'd like to be able to design my own courses, and play over a network.
Any recommendations?
Thanks.

"That" would be the icing on the cake!
Sounds good to me.
Thanks.

buh-bye
I think if you have version 1.0.1, the patch is already included. I'm
not sure what the upper limit is for putts with the patch, but I think
it's at least 100 feet.
My favorite is Jack Nicklaus 6, great graphics and over 600 courses
that can be downloaded for free. PGA 2000 is good too. It has a nice
mouse swing that doesn't depend on timing clicks on a meter. I've
never played Links since Links 386, so I can't comment on that one.
The screen captures I've seen from Links 2001 look interesting,
especially since they are going to include a course designer and there
should be more courses available for it without buying them from
Microsoft.

You can download for JNx and EA's TW99/TW2000 as well. Although TW2000 is
easily *THE WORST* golf game to hit the market in a LONNNGGG time.
You seem to really know your stuff.
I still only have JN5, maybe I'll try the patch on it, and see if I can't
get it to explode or something. (I can always reinstall it regardless).
Maybe if you're not busy sometime, I'd like to invite you online for a game.
Is JN5 compatible with JN6 over the internet I wonder?
It's too bad all the courses weren't interchangeable so you could build a
bigger library.
I'm looking forward to trying the new course designer with 2001.

There is a software patch for JN5 and supposedly you can get it at
ftp://ftp.infogrames.net/patches/jack51up.exe .
I couldn't find any text info describing it, but the site does seem to
be connected to Accolade in some way. It's worth checking out.
As playing a round or two with you. I'd like that, but I've never had
much luck when I tried to play online. My computer doesn't seem to be
up to the task. Since we have different versions of the game, I doubt
if it work any way. Thanks for asking though.

>Wow George!
It was probably $30 - $45 dollars when it first came out?
That seems to be the going rate for many new releases.
As George so graciously pointed out, you can now get it at "unbeatabledeals.com" for $5.

You know, Maxis is selling The original Sim City for $0.99 cents now!
Can you believe that?
I paid 35 bucks for that thing when it first came out, still have the receipt
from Babbages.
Oh no, now I'm getting all "Fa-klempt" <sp> again...

Okay. I think you mentioned the patch for JN6 before, so your re-post about JN5 (which is what I
have) will suit me just fine. I’ll give it a try.
Also, as for playing on-line, I went ahead and installed it on a friend of mine’s PC, so she and
I can test it out, in a day or so, and see how well it works. Someone at a JN site suggested that
anyone attempting to play online should turn-off all extra graphics and sound effects before
playing, to minimize system resources, and thus allow the game to run more smoothly. He said that
even under the best conditions it was still a bit "laggy".
I’m also in the midst of designing a couple of new courses. I used to be quite adept at the
original JNG&CD kit, but I have a bit of catching up to do, before I feel comfortable with the
new software.
I’ll probably also go ahead and get JN6 while I’m at it.
So far I like what I see. The graphics are a bit trickier to import, but the outcome is definatly
a noticeable improvement. I‘ll check back in couple of days, and maybe have a surprise "course"
or two for you.
Thanks again and take care,
J.
