One of my favourite golf events of the year is coming up in August.

I found out about the event here on rec.sport.golf more than a dozen years ago while perusing lots of golf related topics. I corresponded with the tournament organizer and my wife and I attended out first of many RSG events... I think it was 2000, but I could be a year or so off.

It is unfortunate that there is so little golf discussion these days.

Today I played, and I wish I hit more fairways, both off the tee and on other shots. Hitting from the rough is extremely difficult on our course. I need to convince myself that distance off the tee is not always the best route to go.

Cheers... Bob

I played Friday and was less then stellar but I did hit my share of nice shots. Also putted quite well!

I played yesterday and was on fire!

Started off with 5 pars in a row. Just couldn't do anything wrong!

Then doubled #6, but that was the start of a fast downhill slide! :(

Doubled #7 (par 3), bogied #8 and #9

And we won't even talk about the back 9...

Excellent!

I seem to be able to shoot a 5 on a Par 3 and then follow up with a 5 on a Par 5. (holes 3 and 4 on my course)

> And we won't even talk about the back 9...

Lloyd, I'm finding that my back nine scores are generally greater than my front nine, even though the front is par 37 and the back par 35. Lately I have been assuming it has something to do with some muscle fatigue I have along with fleeting concentration.

Then some days confound that thinking when I shoot much better on the back!

We'll see what happens today when my wife and I head out to play with some long time friends.

Cheers... Bob

Geting tired is certainly part of it beyond some age point. Playing
reguraly and keeping the golf muscles is also a significant part of it.

I turned 81 yesterday and this morning I played my first full nine holes
since partially tearing the meniscus in my left knee last August. I
did a bit better than I expected but by the time I putted out on #9 I
was whipped. Had I tried the back nine they might have had to call EMS
to haul me off the course <g>. But from nine I'll work my way up to
twelve and by July will be up to playing a full eighteen. (I hope)

I had 20 stableford points on the front nine on Thursday, and was
playing steady on the back nine until a lost ball on 14, then another
lost ball on 16. At this point my mind was well and truly gone. On 17
- made a triple on a reasonably straightforward par 5. Smashed a drive
with anger up the middle on 18, lob wedge on with a 4 footer for
birdie and missed it.

Golf does my head in. It really does.

I played in a heaven and hell tournament this weekend. Yesterday we
played on the 68.2/124 silver tees and today on the 73.5/131 black
tees - except the tee boxes were as far back as possible, and the pin
positions the most difficult ones.

I'm an inconsistent player who scored lower today than yesterday.

Hope to meet your there, David. I've followed various threads you have contributed to over the years. And, if you like it out here, maybe you can join the American team in 2014 for Border Wars.

Golf has been especially fun for me of late. 77 yesterday and 75 today, which is my best course score. Trending to an 8 Ghin.

Earlier this Spring, I took three lessons and worked hard in between. My driving distance is 20 yards further. Key is better technique. I get into the slot better and I utilize my lower body now. Always thought that it was a hip rotation but its not. It's a shift...left heel to right heel, which flattens the downswing and gives me more power. Another key is a proper grip, which I'd never figured out on my own without my pro. Basically I had the grip in my palm instead of fingers and hand pad.

Greg, I think I learned that grip about a century ago reading Hogan's
"Five Fundamentals . . ." I habitualy hook my club under the index
finger of my left hand and the heel pad of the hand then close my
fingers. That serves to keep it out of my palm.

Congrats on the distance gain - ain't it nice! Great scores, too.

Sounds like both fun and progress, Greg--congratulations. I haven't
been on a normal course in about a year except a couple of tournaments
where I ride with my retirees group; otherwise I prefer to walk but I
lost too much practice time to other priorities to do much the last
several months.

For a while now I've been going every week or so to an 18 hole 3-par
course where Tiger played when he was a small kid. So far nothing
Tiger has rubbed off on me, but lately my game elements have been
improving. Last week I had my best 9 hole score on that course, and
tomorrow I plan to do all 18. Holes range from 85 yards to about 140,
smallish and sloped greens, plenty of long rough. In a couple of
weeks I have another tournament with my group, so we'll see if it's
real or not. The last two or three years have been horrible.

I have the vacation time, flights are reasonable and I've always
wanted to go out there. Problem is I haven't played much in the last
year. I stopped playing last April. I didn't touch a club until
August when I went to RSG Ohio. The night before I left I was
diagnosed in the emergency room with a 7mm kidney stone but I went
anyway and played for 3 days in agonizing pain. The next time I
touched a club was last month when I was vacationing in Salt Lake City
and played a course called Bountiful Ridge. I have it on my Links 386
golf game and I've always wanted to play it if I was ever out that
way. So that has been my story of my golf for the past year.

Scott sent me some links to the courses you guys are playing and they
are gorgeous. I don't get to play courses like that except when I go
to RSG events so it's kind of inviting. I hope to make a decision in
the next week or two.

When I was in Salt Lake City last month the only decent day was the

My girlfriend and I planed a 3 day backpacking trip in northern New
Mexico. We started at 12,000 feet. I had a constant headache,
couldn't sleep or eat. We turned around the next morning and headed

One of my must do trails is the Wonderland trail around Mt. Rainier.

There's a lot of good hiking in that area. I remember being choppered
in to lots of remote areas and spending days hiking. I remember
hiking in snow one day then 85 degree heat the next. If you get a
chance to see the Yakima Valley take it. It's really beautiful in the

Fifteen years ago the lady who is now my wife moved to Tacoma. The
company that I worked for at the time told me that I could go there to
manage their Northwest office. When I went in to talk to the guys in
April I happened to ask when the golf season was. The answer...July
13th. Lot of laughter but, I looked out the window and commented on
the rain. They said it would stop on July 12th. :-)

I decided to stay in Dallas and she moved back in a couple of months.

I was there for eight weeks. July and August. They say those are the
best months. The weather was horrible.

I've been pretty much everywhere in the US. There's two places that
I'd have to get big money to go back to, the PNW and Texas.

The three best places in the US are Michigan, Florida, and Manhattan.

BTW, this time of year SE Michigan is like a garden.

I just don't understand. Summers in the Seattle area are great. Highs in the high 70's, low 80's. Crystal clear skies. Low humidity. So low, there is usually a fire danger before the rains start again. Really a lot like Southern CA is all year.

Pitiful. You've never been anyplace with great weather.

Highs were in the 70's and 80's but it got cold every night. Several
times we awoke to find frost on the ground. The only time we saw blue
skies was between the clouds.

We'd go weeks in the summer and never see any clouds at all.

Olympic is nice but often you are in dense forest and can't see a thing. Mt. St. Helens is a different story. Incredible vistas of an active volcano and the damage it caused. It's fascinating to see the terrain in recovery. It's only 45 miles from my place!

Thanks!
