Hi,

I'd like to buy a new set of golf clubs and don't know whether to buy a name
brand like Tommy Armour or a brand unknown to me called Confidence. I guess
there are hundreds of club manufacturers in the States and only a small
minority (the 'name' brands) are known to me through high profile marketing.
Does name brand equal quality? I am choosing between Tommy's Royal Scott and
an equivalently priced set called Confidence Visa (in Australia this is
going to cost AUS$800). How am I to compare the quality of these two sets?
Does anyone out there know anthing about these two brands?

Ta,
Steve.

Steve,

I have never heard of these 'Confidence' clubs. I know Tommy Armour
clubs well, but not the 'Royal Scot' line. It may be a club I know, but
is being marketed under a different name is AUS.

What I can tell you is that Tommy Armour makes well designed and well
liked clubs of excellent quality. The only exception is their 100%
titanium irons (Ti-100's), and those were just over priced. The quality
of the manufacture itself was very good. Other Tommy Armour clubs such
as the original 845s, 855s, Oversized 845s, etc. are all very reasonably
priced (in the USA anyway) in comparison to other OEM's and the quality
is as good as or better than any other major OEM.

My uncle has a set, blades, and must be from at least the 70's. I
didn't know they were still making them.

Bob Williams is the club designer of the Confidence golf clubs. I know,
because I am a proud owner of Confidence Golf Clubs. They are manufactured
in Palm Springs CA. Confidence clubs used to be quite famous in the 70's,
and like a flash went right out of sight again. Bob Williams bought the
near defunct company and began designing new models and also continuing the
sale of the blades.

Although the company isn't in the lime light, I wouldn't discount the
quality. Bob Williams is available to speak to at his company and stands by
his product 100% IMHO You may call with questions relative to the clubs
balance point, swing weight, torque, design etc. if you wish before
purchasing the clubs. There are also brochures available if needed.

I know of two numbers and an email for Confidence Golf

Steve:

The wedge that I have is really just standard. They may have something like
that in one of their other lines, but that almost sounds like an Alien Wedge
<maybe>?

I do know something about my line of of wedges though; they do have a
strong line of them. They have the 50 deg Gap, 52 deg Away, 56 deg Sand, 60
deg Lob, and 64 deg Hi Lob. My irons were, I think about $600 for 3-PW and
$80 for additional irons. I was thinking of trying their driving iron, but
want to wait and give my woods more time.

Hope you find what you're looking for,
