PGA Tour alive and well!

housebound, I watched the LA Open. The throng of spectators out there,
masses on the hillside on the 18th, just like the good ole days told
me the PGA Tour is definitely alive and well.
There were literally tears in my eyes as I watched Stricker make his
final putt and win the event to become the #2 golfer in the world.
Even the PGA Tour Commish said that if they had 150 Steve Strickers
there would be no need for a PGA Tour!
...then I watched a boring football game that no one really cares
about.....

I, too, was pleasantly surprised at the turnout and the good golf that
was played at Riviera.

Good to see Steve Stricker win yesterday.
No one cared about the 'boring' football game? 106 million + Rob. Just
rephrase your last sentence to read 'I watched a boring football game that
I didn't care about".........

The post was sarcastic...but I do like Stricker though. There was no
one there. The LA Open! The broadcast was totally tedious. About the
only interesting thing was Holmes making a nice eagle on 17.
The football game was great. Great to see the Saints win! ...and it
was a great win!

Sorry Rob, didn't get the sarcastic part. It's what happens when one
doesn't spend a lot of time here. I enjoy the LA Open (or whatever they
call it) It's an interesting course that always seems to draw some drama
on the last few holes. Steve Stricker winning was a bonus.

Hogan's alley is one of the better venues. A kinda tough birdie hole
on 17 and a tough par on 18. But no one seems to care any more.

Every time any mention is made of Riviera, I'm reminded that the Bobby
Jones film shorts -- which were "discovered" (after being presumed
lost) in the 1990s -- were filmed at Riviera, not far from Hollywood.
One of the shorts -- about hitting a 4-wood (or was it a 3-wood?) --
was shot on Riviera's 18th hole, a fact made obvious by the sight of
the unique clubhouse sitting atop the hill, in the distance beyond the
18th green (as the camera looked down the line at Jones' shot). Of
course nowadays, the same shot Jones hit (stiff) with his fairway wood
is hit with mid- to long- irons by today's pros.

I was fortunate to be able to play Riviera many times and there is
something about the 18th hole that they never show on TV.
When you tee off it is directly into a big hill and you can't see the
fairway. To the left of the tee there's a twenty foot periscope that
is used to see if the fairway is open. It's a hell of a hole to play,
and those greens are really, really fast.

Those shorts are glimpse into what golf once was...and no, you didn't
have to be rich to play, in my life's experience anyways, there have
always been lots of public access courses that were in fact more
reasonable than most public access courses today.
Riviera is a great old course and it makes for great golf when the
pros play it.
