I don't think he's required, by law, to make a statement to the police
other than a description of the accident. Something like, I was
traveling west on said street when I struck the fire hydrant and the
tree. I'm sure his lawyer has told him that.

He certainly doesn't want to lie to the police. So he should give
them what information they require and say nothing else.
