I am a lurker to this group and frequently read and enjoy the various
postings. One topic that interests me is the value of old clubs. About 10
years ago I stumbled across a set of clubs at a rummage sale that I
thought probably had collector's value .. full set of McGregor irons that
had the copper faced inserts (Tourneys I think) that were in good shape,
as well as a set of 1-3-4-5 Tourney woods in equally good shape. When I
got the set home I found that although the soleplate was McGregor Tourney
Oil Hardened, the top signature was Ben Hogan. I was very surprised since
both McGregor and Hogan make their own lines of clubs. I have wondered
ever since just how rare the set was and when it was distributed .. also,
the value of the set (all matched and had original leather wrap grips).
Does anyone know the answers to these questions? Thanks in advance. JDR

According to The Golf Club Identification and Price Guide, edited by
Mark Wilson and published by Golfworks, Hogan played and endorsed
MacGregor clubs prior to forming his own company in December, 1953.
Interestingly, although MacGregor clubs are described back to 1950,
none endorsed by Hogan are included.

JDR,
These are some beautiful clubs you've got. Please hold on to them til
you're sure of their value. I don't own any price guides, but I work in
a golf discount store over my summers, so I hear stuff about old clubs
from time to time. As the other gentleman said, Hogan endorsed
McGregor's clubs briefly before forming his own company. These clubs,
with original grips, are worth some good money. I'm curious, about how
much did you pay for them? If I can find out from someone how much these
are worth, I'll let you know. If you're looking at unloading them, give
me a shot, as I am a big Hogan fan and these are hard clubs to find.

I found a reference to MacGregor-Hogan clubs in the USGA book "The Club
Makers". It indicates they were produced in the 1940's. Other clubs in
the line were endorsed or named after Byron Nelson, Jimmy Demaret, and
Louise Suggs. No value is given.

Phil mann responded to Jerry Rogers questions concerning the rarity of
McGregor Tourney-Ben Hogan autographed 1 through 5 woods that this
combination of signatures was not listed in club guides since 1950. I
want to thank Phil for his response. I am now more curious than ever as
to their value and year of manufacture, especially since another member
of this newsgroup emailed that his father had played a set identical to
the set described years earlier and had, some years ago I think, sold the
set to a collector for $2500. I don't have mine now, but really wonder
about their worth if they are unlisted. Thanks to Phil Mann and others
for their assistance!

> REGARDS,TIM SCHUTTFor Jerry Rogers: Good info from Tim Schutt. Thanks for your Thanks.
Additional info: The Encyclopedia of Golf Collectibles, by John M. &
Morton W. Olman (available thru the USGA) lists several sources of
information on classic clubs, which they define as "clubs with
exceptional looks or playability which were made from the late 1930s
through the mid 1960s."
Joe Clement, Classic Golf Clubs, a Pictorial Guide.
Tom Wishon, The Golf Club Price Guide.
Jim Kaplan, owner of Vintage Golf in Glencoe, IL had reproduced
catalogs of that era for MacGregor, Wilson, and Hillerich and Bradsby.
According to the Olmans, MacGregor produced by far the most
valuable classic clubs, and among woods they list: Tommy Armour 945
Eye-O-Matic, Tommy Armour 693, Tommy Armour M85 Eye-O-Matic, and
Ben Hogan model. Good luck in your search for more information.
