Keith,
I have been with these folks a few years and for the price, it is not so
bad. Some decent instructional material in each issue and good information
about the Tour and new equipment. I have heard that they contact members
for equipment demos, however, i have not been so lucky.
They send you a discount book that does offer a variety of legitimate
discounts throughout the country. I have used the book a few times,
especially when travelling, and that alone will more than pay for the cost
of the subscription.
For the price, especailly the $12 you mention, i would say go with it.
Eric
My experience was that it was a total waste of money, but YMMV.

They sent me unsolicited golf instructional videos - These were dated and
probably could not be sold any other way. They said that unless I returned
them (at my cost), I would HAVE to pay for them! This is unethical and
probably also illegal in many jurisdictions.
Don't believe it if they say they will send you items to "Test" - maybe a
few people get these, but that is just a come-on to get you to send them
your money.
If you want a magazine - get one of the mainstream ones. If you want to
improve your game, get a good instructional book and take a lesson or two -
Latter was the best thing I ever did - At 60 years of age, I went from 15 to
6 handicap after taking just a few lessons and watching Golf Channel.

The magazine is interesting. Forget the free equipment tests ... I've never
got one.
The largest benefit you can derive would be if you are interested in going
to one of the 1-week golf camps. The discounts (from the participating
schools) would be hundreds, and possibly thousands of dollars.
The other good thing are the membership tournaments. I went on one to
Pinehurst and, while pricey, was significantly less than I would have paid
to go there as an independent traveller. It was well run and lots of fun.

Confucious says: "Man who wait with mouth open waiting for duck to fly in
will go hungry".
If you change "effort" in the above statements to $$$$$$$ , then I agree.
Then too, the comparison with a Country Club is valid.
If you only have $$, then I would steer well clear of PGA Partners Club. It
is actually just a scam - something like the matrix scams that are
currently prevalent - They sell you a magazine by offering you hope that you
will get certain valuable freebies. Some benefit, but the majority do not.

I was really one of the original "Charter Members" and in the initial
literature they indicated that they would provide a "return carton,"
which they did on the very first instructional material. The second
one was sent in the manner you indicated... that I would have to pay
to return it. I wrote them, quoting their original offer, and said I
would not send it back unless they provided the means. Cost me postage
for the letter but I never received a response... still have the
material.
Not the end of the story... a year or two later, I received another
packet for a "Charter Member." I reminded them of our previous
situation and told them to remove me from their list of potential
members... never heard from them again.

Neither I, nor anyone I know, who joined, ever received anything to
test.

This is a poor analogy - Titleist have the best product and are asking a
high price for it. Partners Club have a useless product and have to con
buyers into buying it by offering perks that they may never see.
So far as the Prov V,s are concerned, your analysis may be true for "you" -
A good player would be able to see the difference between an excellent and a
K-mart ball and decide whether or not it is worth it.

I joined this club a couple of months ago. For my $12 annual fee, I
have received a free sleeve of Maxfli Noodle golf balls (approx $5
retail value) and used my free PGA tournament pass last week to attend
the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines (saving $25). So, to date, I'm
already up $18.
I've also received four $10 "Green Fee Rebate Coupons" for use on green
fees I'll pay (at any golf course) once each quarter this year.
Admittedly, I haven't used this particular benefit yet, but as they've
honored every promise made so far, I'd expect that they'll honor this
one also. So, "betting on the come", that will be another savings of
$40, making $70 in all.
And, if I happen to be selected to test any golf equipment later this
year (which I'll be able to keep), I'll just consider that "gravey".
Oh yes... I recently received an instructional video in the mail, for
which they were asking $7 if I chose to keep it. I reviewed it, thought
it was decent, but decided to return it using their postage free label
and box provided.
Now guys, I'm as skeptical as the next person on deals that seem "just
too good to be true" but, unless I'm really missing something here, I
can't see how this is anything but a decent deal. Besides, Tom Lehman
is the club president and he wouldn't be part of a shady deal... now
would he?? ;-)

It is not shady - Just in my experience, a little unethical - They are not
doing it out of the goodness of their hearts - they are in it to make a buck
and rely on people like you who are able to take advantage of the tickets,
etc to promote on their behalf - Other like myself and a few others here,
have had bad experiences and will post our experiences to counter yours -
fair enough?
Not all of us live near a PGA tournament location, the clubs that honour
the greenfee vouchers are where?, they never offered me any free golf balls
(and who wants a Noodle anyway ;)), the magazine had very little useful
content.
I will stay away!

Fair enough? Certainly Jacko. That's exactly why I posted MY
experience. Not to dispute yours, or anyone elses for that matter...
but to simply offer my own humble opinion. I just didn't feel it was
necessary for me to add a "fair enough" disclaimer in order to do so.
>Not all of us live near a PGA tournament

>vouchers are where?
Living near a PGA tournament certainly was a factor in my decision to
accept their offer. That alone was twice the value of my fee. And just
for clarification, it's not the golf course that honors the green fee
coupon. You pay the regular green fee and mail in the green fee receipt
to them (the Partner's Club). They then mail the $10 rebate back to
you. That way you can choose any course to play.
>...they never offered me any free golf balls (and

They offered me a minimum of $70 worth of benefits that I COULD use,
for a mere $12 fee. That seemed like a decent offer to me so I took it.
As it doesn't appear as though they offered you anything worthwhile that
you could use, other than perhaps the magazine, I can only wonder why
you even decided to join in the first place. It really doesn't concern
me at all that you have decided to "stay away". For your sake, I only
wish that you had made that decision before you gave them your money.
;)
Again, just MY opinion Jacko... fair enough?
Cliff

Somehow, in looking over the headers of your messages, I think you may have
more than a casual reason to post positively about the PGA PC - not many do.
But them I never trust anyone who posts from WebTV ;)
Jack O

Careful Jacko, your paranoia is showing.
I invite anyone from this group to check out my headers and report back
to the group if they seem suspicious. My e-mail address is absolutely
credible and I have no reason to be anything other than absolutely
honest and objective in my opinion.
It is you Jacko who, for some unknown reason, has decided to make this
seemingly otherwise innocuous subject, where all posters have simply
expressed their honest views and experiences on this matter, a personal
vendetta. You sound as if you truly suspect that I'm a shill for the
PGA Partner's Club. Do you also check under your bed for the boggie man
before you tuck yourself in each night?
>But them I never trust anyone who posts from
>WebTV
To be honest, I must admit, from seeing _some_ posts from _some_ Webtv
subscribers, that you have a point... but only to an limited extent.
But, of course, you fall into the trap of generalizing. I subscribe to
Webtv (now MSNTV) because I really have no need for a computer and enjoy
the convenience of relaxing in my recliner and surfing the net with my
wireless keyboard. Okay, so I'm a bit lazy.
But you imply that we are all sophomoric, worthless, uneducated dolts.
FWIW, I was a career US Navy pilot, who retired in San Diego as a
Commander after 28 years of service to this country (obviously NOT
yours). I mention this only to refute your generalizing comments. I
have also been a lifelong golf addict for 40 years who loves to play and
"talk golf" with other reasonable addicts. I certainly have no reason
to lie (as you crudley imply) about my initial experiences with PGA
Partners.
I have truly enjoyed browsing through this very interesting newsgroup
for the past month or two. The vast majority of you are not only
extremely knowledgeable, informative, frank and interesting to read, but
able to accept a differing views from your own, without going on a
personal attack. You, Jacko, are a distinct exception!
For the most part, we are all somewhat anonymous in this group. It's
easy for any of us to make any claims we wish. But if anyone from this
group (particularly from the San Diego area), would like to check me
out, or any of the statements I've made in this post, please feel free
to personally e-mail me and I'll be happy to verify anything I've said.
As for you Jacko, people like you are very predictable, so why not go
ahead and take your last cheap shot. Just don't expect a reply, for I
have already wasted too much of my time with an idiot like you. But of
course I only mean that in a nice way. ;))))

I'm with Cliff on this (and have said so in the past). The PGA Tour
pass alone is worth the subscription. There are other benefits that
are (or could be) icing on the cake, but it certainly isn't a scam as
Jacko is insinuating.
Scott
Personally, I've enjoyed the videos and the magazine. I did get some
Maxfli Patriot balls to test. And I called the TPC Sawgrass yesterday
and they told me how to use my pass at The Player's Championship.
Granted, I don't get a lot out of membership (certainly not enough to
spend $300 or so to be a Life Member!) but at least I've gotten
something out of it.
I spent the money to become a Life Member a few years ago
(it was less than the total I'd sent them in the preceding
years; I was a charter member), and you know, I can't
remember the last time they sent me a damned thing.
I have a nifty leather-and-brass bag tag, but that just
means I don't get the plastic ones every year any more.
I really miss the Media guide. That was easily the
coolest part of the whole deal. Although that was before
there were a billion places to get golf on the net.
I'm going to have to call them up and see if they still
know who I am.
