This is the perfect place to find my answer I am looking for.
Can anyone out there tell me the measurements on Earl Campbells legs
when he played. Maybe we could compare them to some current RB's
like Barry. This is just a topic that my roommates and I toss around
and marvel at. The strength and power that Campbell had.

Just post to net...Dont send me mail

thanks

I read somewhere that Christian Okoye had 38-inch thighs. That's about
the girth of my torso.

The legend gremlins are at it again I see... Earl had 30 inch thighs in his
playing days... Emmitt's are NOT quite that big and if Earl does have 34 inch
thighs now he has become a big fat slob and now has a 40 inch waist to go with
his huge thighs!!!

If it's power you want in a running back, I think most people would
agree that Eric Dickerson was one of the best. Emmitt Smith and Barry
Foster certainly have their own displays of power, but Eric just
flattened people in his prime, good O-line or bad O-line.

I wouldn't know but he did have powerfull legs. I don't know for sure what
his thighs measured. Earl Cambell was listed as playing at 5' 11" 224 lbs and

Dalton Hillard RB for the Saints has close to that and he is just 5' 8" about
205 lbs, but his legs (thighs) are very close to his waist size and he has to
have special pants made for his frame . Hillard does look somewhat distinct
in street clothes and not knowing his profession you may think his physical
apperance is somewhat a freak with such large legs. Hillard had some good
years earlier, but injuries and age have slowed him down in the last few
years but still those legs have the power and the low center of gravity made
it hard to tackle him in his peak when he had better speeed. FYI Ronnie Lott
has said Hillard was one of the most punishing runners he has ever faced.

Dickerson did have good power and he was really fast for such a big/powerful
6' 3" 220 lbs runner too. His attitude is what seemed lacking. He did get
7 years in a row 1,000 yd seasons with a 2,105 yd and 5.6/yd carry season in
1984, and finished with 13,259 yds total and 2nd all time behind Payton's
16,726. But the last four years his best year was only 729 yds in 1992, and
had held out and other disturbances. As far as pure talent he may one of the
very best ever, but the heart just was not their as some of the very best
runners like Payton and some of the top guys today, IMHO.

Sorry ronnie!

Earl Campbell DID have 34" thighs, the same size thighs as the ole
Olympic speed skating champ Eric Heiden. I know, believe me. Earl was my
favorite player when I was young, and still remains the most punishing runner
ever. I met him twice when I was younger and he was a very intimidating man
by looks, but we all know he was a great role model and person. The Tyler Rose.
He had a heart the size of Texas. His thighs might not be that big anymore,
but I doubt he is a 'big, fat slob'. He works with Univ. of Texas last I heard
as an assistant coach or scout or something to that extent.

O.K. Anita! I've been beckoned in the offseason to recap to all
NETHEADS the real story behind the scenes here in the Motor City.

Why do I refer to Wayne FonteZ as "Cocaine" Wayne?

Back when Nanuk (Wayne in his winter attire) was a mere defensive coach
for the paper Lions, he was pulled over or wrecked or SOMETHING really late
night (like 3 AM). When the police searched his vehicle, they stumbled, bumbled, rumbled onto something white and powdery. Well after giving it the ole pinky
litmus test (hmmm is my tongue numb???) they figured it out. Wayne has cocaine
in his car. Well, when they asked ole Wayne what he was doing at 3 in the morning yawning with cocaine in his car... Wayne replied for the record, "It's my
sons. This is his car." O.K. Wayne... wink. wink. sure buddy. Well the whole
matter seemed to disappear and we never really heard much more about it. Of
course he pr'ly got it from Mr. Ford since a year or two later he was named
HEAD COACH of the Lions. YIPPIE!

So now we call him infamously COCAINE WAYNE.

The funniest part about Wayne is how he pronounces his last name.
To him he is Wayne FONTS actually his brother went by Lenny FONTEZ.
Hmmmmmmmm..... Somethin smells fishy.

Anyway that is the scoop from Motown. This has been a MICHIGAN MAN production.
All proceeds go to the HELP (WAYNE) FOUNDATION. Stay tuned for DANCE FEVER
with Danny Tario at 7PM EST. G'day.

I cannot stand idly by and allow this slander to continue... Eric Dickerson
played the game with everything he had!!! He played with a ruptured disk in
his neck for four years ferchrissakes!!! He was platooned with Roger Craig
and Marcus in LA and suspended for half of his last two seasons in Indy and
I don't know what to make of the debacle in Atlanta this year... Dickerson was
a competitor who carried several mediocre teams into the playoffs on his legs..
He pissed and moaned about the stupid shit the Irsay's were doing with
personnel in Indy which made him no different from 90% of the football fans
in America... so they jerked him around for it... All Eric ever wanted was
two things out of the team he played for... 1) To give him the ball and 2) To
have good talent surrounding him so they could win... He made no bones about
it... He got mad because after carrying the Rams on his back for five years
and having to pull teeth to get 1.5 mil a year out of 'em... and then watched
them turn around and give more money to some snot-nosed rookie QB!!! Then
he watched in disbelief as his new team, the Colts, rode his legs into the
playoffs and then turned around and traded their best offensive lineman and
their best wideout for Jeff George.. another snot-nosed rookie QB who again
was handed more money than Dickerson without any fuss or fight.... THAT
WOULD PISS ME OFF TOO!!!!! And probably every other sane person out there!

He jumped at the chance to go to the Raiders because the Raiders had always
done whatever it takes to win... How was he to know that Al Davis had gone
senile and no longer had a clue? Now even I can't excuse him for not knowing
that Glanville didn't have a clue!

But there's more. There was some very bizarre weirdness about it that
I cannot remember. He had driven his car into a ditch. He then left,
but came back (or something like that). He told the police that he had
come back to get the car for his son. BUT: (I think---this is from memory---
it may be wrong, but it is no less bizarre) His son had already called
the police or been called, or something like that, and said that he had
not been in the car (or that it was not his).

The key, though, is this: At one point, the police asked Wayne, "So, then:
Who _was_ driving the car?"

Wayne replied, "A phantom"!

True! At least that's what the papers all said...

Coke or not, Wayne is _the_ worst coach in football. If coke, then no
wonder he's so popular with the players. : )

Enjoy,

IMHO Dickerson was maybe the most or certainly in the top 5 talented RBs ever,
but just as you have gone own about it, he is a "what if" #2 guy who's last
years just did not reflect it. Besides he did have an attitude that was his
worst obstacle particularly after he got the bigger bucks, and he could have
been the best ever but he is IMHO a "what if" guy. But with 7 in row over
1,000 yards and that 2,105 yd season he will make the Hall, but my point is he
could have been better with his ability, and he just did not show the heart
some of the others with less talent have, IMHO of course. Too bad about
that injury that ended it all for him.

BTW, on the Raiders he did not platoon with Roger Craig because Craig was a
Viking in 1992 when Eric D came along to the Raiders. Dickerson got more than
twice the reps than the next two rushers, but he got less than half yard less
per carry than the two others. But that was his best season since 1988.

Raiders 1992 Runners
Att yds avg Long TDs
Dickerson 187 - 729 - 3.9 - 40T - 2

Nick Bell 81 - 366 - 4.5 - 66T - 3

M. Allen 67 - 301 - 4.5 - 21 - 2

The Raiders of course were gald to get rid of Allen and some there thought
of him as washed up but in 1993 for the Chiefs he carried 206 for 764 yds and
12 TDs and also with 34 receptions for 238 yds & 3 TDs. That a lot more
production than any Raider RB for 1993.

What does this have to do with Earl Campbell...
Christian Okoye can by no means, though he is the only specimen that
comes to mind, that could compare to the god of power runners, BIG EARL.
I was 6 years old when i saw the Oilers lose to Pittsburg in '79, when the
receivers were running patterns with hands down their pants and a man
known as Big Earl carried the ball 43 times.
This man could never run the mile jog in practice but amased more hard
earned runs in a 6 year career than any other running back in the history
of football. The only other rb that comes to my mind that can compare
with the heart earl showed during his career, is walter payton.
Todays glamour boys could not even hold Campbell's, Payton's, Csonka's,
Brown's and Dorsett's jock... except for maybe Barry Sanders.
Earl Campbell was the HEART of the Oilers offense, which until before he
arrived, was absolutely pitiful, and was as soon as Bum and he took off,
outta houston. Earl Campbell exemplified heart and courage.... running
on a broken leg (stress fracture) and breaking 11 takles in one 15 yard
run just proves that no one man may ever replace what he meant ot me in
my youth as a boy in Houston.
I once asked my father, who was happily married to my mom, if Earl
Campbell could be my step-father, not knowing what a step father truely
was, i knew i wanted te be like that man, number #32, CAMPBELL.
Heart, determination and raw strength carried a man, a team, a city and
if it weren't for the Cowboys, for all too few years.
If i am a Houston Oilers fan, even more, a football fan at all, it is due
to the one they called....

BIG EARL...

Dickerson should make the HOF on the 1st ballot for being the dumbest
back in the NFL. How could anyone leave an OL like he did for Indy?
He would have broken Payton's record if he stayed. Could you imagine
Emitt leaving the Boyz OL? He could forget about any endorsment $$ then.
BTW how many signed contracts did Eric hold out on anyway? Just
wondering...

Another interresting note is the physique of today's best backs.
It seems that Thurman, Emitt and Barry's body sizes are somewhat
similar. Is there any trend? Emitt seems to run low to the ground
and has very good balance. What about the size of the Rams back
out of ND?

Personally, I don't think Eric could have ever been the "best ever" for
one very simple reason... No hands... Eric could not catch the ball unless
it was handed to him... He never developed his game as a receiver and that
is what separates him from Dorsett, Sayers, Simpson, Brown, and Payton... who
comprise my interchangeable top five all time... These guys were "do it all"
players... Payton was the best blocker, Sayers the great return man, Brown the
first high-speed big back, O.J. The first 9.3 sprinter to play tailback in the
NFL... who also just happened to go 215 pounds... Tony D., was probably the
quickest ever to play the game with amazing acceleration and though he never
ran track, there is little doubt he had world class speed in his prime...
Witness that 9.5 100 yard dash in tennis shoes in the Superstars competition!!!
All these guys were dangerous open field runners, good recivers and not afraid
to stick their heads in a block for the QB or for their backfield mates..
Dickerson can't rank with these guys because he simply had no hands... but
as a runner... he belongs on anybody's best ever list... including the one in
Canton...

Well, if they are planning on a team in SA, you can bet it (or the league) will fold after a year or two. To wit:

San Antonio Wings - World Football League; folded, middle of
first season
San Antonio Gunslingers - US Football League; folded after second
season
San Antonio Riders - World League of Am Football; folded after
second season
San Antonio Texans - Canadian Football League; team folded before
first season

Oh yeah, they had an Arena team for a year as well.

Does this mean they never actually got to play Canadian rules football in
San Antonio?
Anyone know how the CFL team in Sacramento is doing? What do they call it
anyway?
Hopefully Las Vegas and Baltimore will have better luck when they join the
CFL this July. I hear there is a chance that CBS might cover these games
now that it has lost its NFL telecasts to Fox. With more coverage, we
Americans might actually come to enjoy watching the livelier Canadian
Football action. I would have routed for the Texans if I had heard about
them when it still mattered.

Shhhh...damn it...it's bad enough that I owned the Sat. Night Fever
soundtrack in junior high....ahhhh...the Seventies...puke, puke.
I burned my copy, along with any polyester garment and my pair of
clogs during Steve Dahl and Garry Meyer's Disco Demolition at Comiskey
Park in...uhhh...about 1978. (I was a wild little adolescent...)

Uhhh....John....just how well DO you know Denny Tario????
I'll bet you used to dress like one of the Village People, too, right??
Come on...tell us...which one did you dress like? Construction worker?
Indian? Cop? Goofy guy in leather? ;)

How many netters can see JGH lip synching to Macho Man....;)

yeah, this has nothing to do with football...it's the offseason...lighten
up!

The Texans folded (financial reasons I think) before they ever got to play a
game.

The team is Called the Sacramento Gold Miners and they went 7 and 11 in their
first year. The majority of their wins came on the last half of the season
after they had a chance to get use to the Canadian game. All in all, a very
respectable showing for their rookie season.

There are 3 more expansion teams joining this year. They are the:
Las Vegas Posse
Baltimore Colts (NFL says they will sue to stop the use of this name)
Shrevport Pirates (team name is not official yet, but city is)

CBS has expressed interest, but says the in wants more American teams in the
league before it will broadcast the games. ESPN-2 will be broadcasting one game
a week, and the Grey Cup (the CFL's Superbowl) will be broadcast on ESPN-1.

If you have any more questions why don't you come and post them on
rec.sport.football.canadian

After all, that's why r.s.f.c is there
