Thanks for the list.

I have two impressions upon a quick reading of the ratings list.
One, there seems to be a lack of speed. Only three people even broke the
4.4 barrier. At one time, the Redskins had three people faster than anyone
on that list. Though, to show that speed isn't everything, two of these people,
Davis and Oliphant, have gone on to less greener pastures.

My second impression is that the defensive tackles are small. Worse, they
are short, so their ability to gain useful weight will be limited.

Two people piqued my interest:

halfback: 2. Nick Bell 6-2 259 4.54 Iowa 7.20
linebacker: 1. Mike Croel 6-2.3 226 4.44 Nebraska 7.50

Bell is fast for such a big man. Croel is fast for *any* man, much
less a linebacker.

I have re-sorted John's list according according to the NSC rating.
Each player's name is preceded by his position and his relative
ranking among players in the same position.

Enjoy.

These two categories have been reversed. I know for sure that Mike
Pollack is a kicker and Alex Waits is a punter.

BTW, what happened to Chris Doyle of Alabama ? I always thought he
was the best kicker to come out this year.

So, with no 9s and only two 8s, can we conclude that this is an
especially cruddy draft?

Thanks. I did enjoy it. One observation is that 12 of the lowest rated
16 on the list are kickers. Does this mean this draft is especially weak in
kickers, or are kickers just rated lower than more key positions like QBs?

Hmmm, not neccesarily. The only 9 rating that I can recall in the '80s was when
Bo Jackson came out (9.0). The Combine is naturally conservative with their
ratings so that their credibility won't plummet when players they notched as
"can't miss" fail miserably (exs: OT Brian Jozwiak (KC), DT Ted Gregory (Den)).

Looking over the list, I'm shocked that QB Tommy Bill is ranked #9 over a guy
like Musgrave. I think that Bill is a pretty workmanlike QB who will give
whatever team drafts him their money's worth, but he didn't start this year at
Penn State and so didn't get much exposure. He DID step in during the FSU game
and showed good arm strength and leadership skills. A prospect.

The few games I saw Todd Lyght, I was unimpressed, considering he is promoted
as a *super* cover guy, a la Mike Haynes. He looked beatable last year, IMHO.

I think most of this is due to the fact he played injured last year. If
healthy, he should be the top CB. He does not have sprinter's speed, but
surprisingly many top CB's do not have such track time speeds. They have
economy of motion, a smooth backpedal and/or turn, and have long-distance
catch-up speed. Tood Lyght has these attributes, and he is a big CB. In
the future the big WR may make a comeback, and the little 5'9" CB may
be hardpressed to defend guys like Al Toon and Rob Moore. Look at the
draft prospect list- the top 3 WR's are all 6'2" and over.

Just remember that the fastest guy in the draft, The Rocket, aint on that
list. Also keep in mind that this combine is held in February when most of
those guys are in marginal to decent shape but certainly not top
condition. The combine rarely turns up more than four or five sub 4.4
burners. Summer training camp will get at least twice as many of them
under that mark. Since most of this shit is hand-timed you can't take it
all that seriously. They once timed Bo Jackson in 4.1 in the 40 at Auburn.
Just because it's not humanly possible (yet) is no reason not to report it
in the press guide.

Nebraska has turned out a number of sub 4.5 linebackers in the last few years,
Thomas, Etienne etc. They have generally taken some time to adapt to the pro
game. Usually, these are running backs who got moved to LB when it became
apparent that the 'P' in PT was for PINE not PLAYING at RB. I don't know
much about Croel but I would be cautious just based on the history of
Nebraska LB's lately. Bell I don't know much about either but he sounds
like another Christian (Stiff) Okoye.

I recently saw a list of the timings of the OSU football team in
the 40-yard dash. The remark below the numbers was that electronic
timings were 'converted' to stopwatch values BY SUBTRACTING 0.2
SECONDS. (Why subtract 0.2 seconds? My guess is to make up for the
reaction time of the guy running the stopwatch.)

Perhaps the combine timings were the electronic variety, which yield
'slower' times?

With regards to kickers/punters, I would like to combine reports on Chris
Gardocki, a junior out of Clemson. He was in the top ten in both categories for
most of last year.

He might be worth a high-round pick due to his strength and versatility. He
can consistently bag 60-yard attempts.

If he could bag 60 yard attempts with even a 45% success rate, he would be a

Such a kicker would present an interesting dilemma for his coach. How
best to utilize him? A 60 yard FG attempt would typically start from
the 43-yard line, the holder setting up at midfield. If I were coach,
would I let this mythical kicker attempt a FG any time I had 4th down
at the 43? 45% of the time he'd make it, 3 points for the good guys.
55% of the time he'd miss, and my opponent would get the ball at the
43, instead of somewhere in the range of the 1 to the 20, lets call it
about the 15 on average to be conservative. Is the 45% chance of 3
points worth the 55% chance of giving up about 28 yards in field
position? I don't know, but a lot more successful TD drives start at
the 43 than at the 15.

Somebody must (or should) have this stat. By looking at lots of
games it would be easy to assign point values to various
situations: 1st and 10 on your own forty with lots of time is
worth (say) 1 point on the average; 3d and 5 on the opponents
20 is worth (say) 4.5 points, 3d and 8 on your own 10 worth -1/2 points
or whatever and so on. Such a table wouldn't take into account
team idiosyncracies (if your quarterback is Lamonica, the only
thing that matters is what down it is, your own 20 and the
opponents twenty being virtually equivalent :-)) or the game score
and time remaining, but it would give a baseline and I bet
deviations wouldn't actually be too large. Has anyone compiled
this? If so, give us some examples.

As far as I know, only two people have ever kicked a field goal of at
least 60 yards in an NFL game. One of them was (of course) Tom Dempsey,
who won a game for the Saints against the Lions with a last-second
63-yarder. The other was Steve(?) Cox, who kicked one of 60 yards once.
Actually, Cox was the punter for the Redskins for a while (they got
him from Cleveland, I think), and was brought in for 50+ yard FGs
as well. If this guy can hit *anything* from 60 yards or more, he'll
be one of the strongest kickers ever. Of course, he'd better be
accurate from under 40, or he won't keep his job long enough to try
those 60-yard FGs (unless he's the punter).

Carter may have spent the last year or two of his career with the
Bears, but most of his career he started for Cincinnatti. This was in

I believe your chronology is in error:
I was but a lad, but I seem to remember that Carter was the first
exciting AND good quarterback the Bears had in a while. But, as
with McMahon, he had a falling out with management (Halas) and was
sent packing. He then landed with the Bengals where he enjoyed a
good career. If anyone remembers the details of the "Chicken
(bleep)" incident which earned Carter his walking papers, please
post. (One of my fond memories of childhood is when at a banquet,
I met and talked with Carter when he was a Bears QB) I wish he had
stayed with the Bears.
