Stanton gets help leading B.C. Jets
By SEAN MAYER
Staff Writer Binghamton Press

Ray Stanton had an awful lot of responsibilities last season, when he coached
the B.C. Jets to the Empire Football League championship while attending to
several business interests.

Stanton announced Friday that he'll return for a second season at the Jets'
helm, but his chores will be reduced. John Cornick, a former quarterback and
head coach of the TC Jets, and the Jets' special teams/receivers coach last
season, has been promoted to assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.

Dave Johnson, former coach at Seton Catholic Central and the Jets' defensive
backs coach last season, is the new defensive coordinator.

Last season's offensive and defensive coordinators, Cal Rucker and Alvin
Lollie, have other commitments, Stanton said.

The Jets' first game is June 27, an exhibition matchup with the Cortland
Gladiators at Binghamton's East Middle School Stadium. They host Kingston in
their EFL season opener July 11.

"The first thing that brought me back is that once again, we have a great
staff," said Stanton, who guided the Jets to a 13-1 in his first season after
forming the team. Stanton in 1970 founded the TC Jets, who ceased operations
in 1988.

"Whether it's the Bear Bryant level or the Lombardi level, the head coach
doesn't do a whole lot," said Stanton, 54. It's your assistants, it's your
two coordinators that run the show. The fact that I have these guys makes the
whole thing greater.

"John and I came to a decision that he would be upgraded to assistant head
coach. If I've got business out of town, this team, as it could have last
season, won't miss a stroke. John will work closely with me and have the
authority with the other coaches that I have."

Last season, the Jets often tried to establish their running game before
throwing the ball. That will change, with the Jets shifting to a pass-
oriented offense under Cornick. Ray Stanton - who threw for 1,824 yards and
24 touchdowns in 14 games and is the head coach's son - will return.
Receivers Mike Carr and Sean Beers, tight end Frank Medina and offensive
linemen Trent Patterson and Chris Patterson are among the expected returnees.

"We're going to take a basic pro set and use up to four wide receivers- there
won't be any more of the three-back stuff," Cornick said. "We're going to
keep some of the basic running plays that were successful for us, but a lot
of times we're going to go with one running back and two slots."

Cornick's staff includes Greene High head coach Lynne Simmons (assistant
offensive coordinator); former TC Jets linemen Ed Petras (line coach); and
Butch Rozboril (running backs).

Johnson, 40, was an assistant for nine years at Seton Catholic Central before
taking the head coaching reins for four seasons.

"We're going to go with a base 4-3 (four linemen, three linebackers), but I
want to show a lot of multiple fronts and get into a lot more of the blitz
packages," Johnson said. "We've got some real talent up front with (Mike)
Ramil, (Dan) Davis and (Sean) Carden, and we want to be able to turn those
guys loose with a core behind them that will be able to scrape and fill."

Johnson's aides are former Johnson City High head coach Al Brunetti (line and
linebackers); former Seton CC assistant Pete Moschak (defensive backs).

Dave Burch, former player and coach for the TC Jets and B.C. Jets, will be
head of player personnel, while maintaining his duties as EFL secretary.
