keeper question

My league is considering adding the keeper option.

How is this ussually done? Does the pwner lose a corresponding draft
pick the next year?

So If you drafted DeAngelo Williams last year in the 8th, you'd get to keep
him this year for your 8th round pick, but he'd go back in the pool the for
next year. If you didn't have anyone worth keeping, you could keep none, and
give up zero picks.

Another league I was in had a similar setup, but they also allowed you to
select one player as your Franchise player, which lasted 3 years.

This allowed you to build your team around one stud and keep you late round
hits around for the next year. I liked that format the best.
