Former Alabama player Gene Jelks is quoted in the Nov 12 Atlanta
Constitution as saying that he was paid to play football at Alabama. He
also claims, now get this, to have tapes with incriminating conversations
from various Tide boosters (shades of Eric Ramsey)!

Jelks alleges that:

His 8th grade coach, Jerry Pullen, conspired with his mother to get him to
sign with Alabama in 1985. Pullen was given a full-time coaching position
at Alabama at the start of Jelk's college career.

Former Tide assistant coach Rocky Felker gave Jelks cash while he was in
high school in Gadsden Alabama, including $583 to buy his mother a Christmas
present and $600 for each of the five playoff games won by his Emma Samson
High team. Felker, now coaching at Tulsa, didn't return messages left at
his home or office.

Tide coaches provided Jelks money that he and his family used to make
payments on a 1984 Ford Escort, bought during his senior year in high
school. The car was registered to his mother, but Jelks claims it was for
his use. Jelks says money for the payments was provided by Alabama coaches,
including a cash payment of $2100 after he enrolled.

He received through the mail cash in white envelopes, with no return
address, while at the university.

Theres a lot more in the article (both claims by Jelks and denials by the
accused). Here is a quote from Jelks:

"I want kids to know that Tide Pride is not all what they think it is. They
buy and sell it. And when they're through with you, they kick you to the
curb. I was bought and sold. Gene Kelks didn't have a choice.
"At this point, I'm 26 and I still have these guys trying to bribe me to
keep me quiet. Giving me $100 here, or helping me out here, or telling me
what a great job I'm doing. They feed me a bunch of lies. I'm tired of
this. It's time to get on with my life, to take control. Any mistakes now,
I have no one to blame."

This is all one man's allegations of course, his word against Alabama's, and
until all of the proof is out, I can't make a decision whether I believe it
or not. I'd like to hear those tapes. Maybe 60 Minutes will call Jelks...

Why is it that when a team is doing well something like that happens
and screw up a team for the rest of the season.

First it was BJ Hobert of Washington. Now this guy from Alabama, when
does it end???

I hope nothing like what happend to Washington last week happens to
Alabama. It is such a shame to have a good season tarnish because of things
like that.

I don't know if this information has already been posted to the net or
not. Either way, here it is:

Excerpt from a story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
Thursday, Nov.12, 1992.

"ALABAMA'S JELKS FOLLOWS PATH OF AUBURN'S RAMSEY"

"A year after Eric Ramsey stunned the Auburn football program with

secretly recorded tapes and allegations of illegal cash payments, former
Alabama captain Gene Jelks has produced tapes of his own alleging NCAA
violations by the Crimson Tide."

These tapes were provided directly to the Constitution and contain
conversations with former Asst. coach Jerry Pullen among others.

There is another interesting angle on the story: Jelks' allegations
include his own mother, who he said "conspired" with Pullen to get him
to sign with Alabama.

Another story in the Constitution described the families fear for
themselves now that their son has gone public. They fear that harm
might come to them.

I'm sure the story will be in _many_ other papers tomorrow. We'll have
to see what comes of it.

Final quote from Jelks: "I want kids to know that Tide Pride is not all

what they think it is. They buy and sell it. And when they're through
with you, they kick you to the curb."

Oh God, here we go again.

According to ESPN Jelks' mother has denied Gene's allegations (at
least those that involve her).

>Another story in the Constitution described the families fear for
>themselves now that their son has gone public. They fear that harm

"You have disgraced the Corleone family." Sorry; couldn't resist.

Being a Bama fan, I'll admit to being a wee bit skeptical. But then,
I AM a wee bit biased. Should these allegations be proven, things
could get interesting. What does the NCAA do, particularly since
this occured two coaching staffs ago? I know, they don't care.

One of the ESPN anchors made an interesting comment--why not send in
the IRS? They'll find if the money exists and where it came from;
in addition, they'd be able to collect income tax on the illegal
payments. :)

The big question: Is all this going to screw Bama up for the Miss State
game (remarkable coincidence there, don't you think?), or will it just
piss them off?
