Texas played an outstanding game without McCoy. Injuries are a part of
the game and it was a clean hit. Bama lost two of their people for the
season early on.
Certainly UT was not the same offensive team without McCoy, but I
don't think he played on the defensive team.
What really made a big difference was the coaching mistake not to run
out the clock at the end of the first half. What almost hurt Bama was
not playing offense in the 3rd quarter.
I do have the game on DVR and I recorded every play on paper.

Two critical turnovers by the inexperienced QB led to the two deciding
Bama scores. On the shovel pass that Bama intercepted, Gilbert was,
in fact, on defense at that point. Even if Alabama hadn't scored a TD
on the fumble at the goal line and kicked a field goal instead, Texas
would have been forced to go for the TD at the end.
Its fair to say that the injury was absolutely relevant to the Alabama
victory.

I'm guessing that losing your starting Heisman-candidate quarterback
in the first quarter of the national championship, following the month
or so to prepare for the game, is a bit different than losing
practically anyone else at any other time.

Texas' defense played really well considering the predicament they
were in. Outside of the long run for the TD, they kept their team in
the game. I was actually surprised ... Alabama had about 2 1/2
quarters to play defense without any concern to have to defend a pass
and could just tee off at the line of scrimmage, and they could not
take command with that enormous advantage.

The mistake before the half was a major one. And when Texas pulled
within 24-21, I thought of your post about last year's game ... it
seemed that Alabama wasn't really interested in playing in this bowl
game either.
They won, and congratulations to them and their fans, but as for their
performance ... yeech!

Saban, and Bear for that matter, played very conservative football and
I never understood that. Bama ran 10 plays in the 3rd quarter, none of
which were designed to do more than use up the clock. You see what
happened when Bama decided to go on offense and play tougher defense.

Bama rarely impressed me with their performance this year. They only
looked good when they had to - two blocked FGs vs. UTinny, a last
minute drive vs. the Barn.
Bama looked like bums from the start of the 2nd half until their lead
was down to 3 points. Then they stopped reading their newspaper
clippings and played ball.
Hugh
