Social Distortion is not underrated.

my vote(s) would go for Matthew Sweet or Sugar/Bob Mould.

I saw Mould in San Francisco in Spring 1991; an acoustic show, it was
pretty amazing. I still love "Wishing Well" and a host of his other
songs from my college daze.

I would say Jane's Addiction or Jesus & Mary Chain myself, but I know
"underrated" depends on your perspective.

It also depends on your rating methodology.

You idots all have excellent taste in music.

Of course, the grunge bands get too much of the love, but it seems
like most of the other bands mentioned in the poasts above had at
least some mainstream success/airplay.

at least I've heard these bands. That probably means they're famous
since I'm a 60's and 70's music kind of guy (with 80's punk thrown
in). I like the modern stuff ok and I hear much of it due to having
teenagers; it's just that I don't have time to remember their names
and songs like I did years ago.

I like those, but, if you're gonna bring a fairly popular band like
Jane's Addiction in, I'm gonna offer up

Rage Against the Machine
Rage Against the Machine
Rage Against the Machine
Rage Against the Machine

Here's a related question - I listened to a lot of the "greats" that
were from my parent's generation - Floyd in particular, but also
Hendrix, The Doors, Beatles, etc. What bands from the 90's, if any, do
you think kids will still listen to in 10-20 years?

Cheers!

Yes, to an extent.
Lagwagon, NOFX, Descendents, ALL, now those were some great pop-punk bands.

Copper Blue is one of the best records of the 90s and easily one
of the most underrated records ever.

Not sure if I consider Social D a 90s band or an 80s band. But
certainly underrated.

Pixies were 86-93, according to Teh Great Wiki. Then Black Francis did
his Frank Black thing, and Kim Deal went to teh Breeders.

I'm not as old as the rest of y'all fossils, so I can't speak much about
the 80s. I was listening to, like, Guns and Roses, Metallica, and
Jane's Addiction in the late 80's, I guess. Uhh, and the Beastie Boys.

Uhh, and none of you yahoos jumped on Kardex's back for Jane's Addiction
- broke up in 1991!!!@!@!

Hey, Kardex, if you're reading this - ever seen Gift?

http://www.amazon.com/Gift-Janes-Addiction-VHS/dp/630288103X

Decent, as far as band-movies go (IMO).

Cheers.

this thread makes me sade.

Most of the music of the 90s made me stop buying cds. By then, the
bands from the 80s that i liked had gone to doing crap (Metallica,
Megadeth, Queensryche, etc) and i just didnt' get with "alternative"
or grunge. I think i started listening to ambient and electronica
then, like Orb, Orbital, Fluke, and the like.

If you count 1989 as part of the 90s, then I vote for The Tragically
Hip.

Social Distortion has many many followers. "Underrated" is semi
misleading, but I guess they did fly a bit under the radar.
Other bands that were good but unoticed in the 90's I'd say:
Voodoo Glow Skulls
Screaming Trees
