FYI in case you haven't heard:

Texas A&M starting Safety Typail McMullen was kicked off the team last
week for academic reasons. McMullen had started 11 of 12 games for A&M
in 1995, and was a needed veteran in a secondary that lacks experience.
This could be a big blow to Texas A&M's chances this year, unless some
of the talented underclassmen step it up a notch. Oh well, at least
there was no cheating this time.

From what I understand, it has something to do with the fact that he
doesn't have enough hours to be a senior. He would have been eligible
had he passed a physics course that he took this summer. In essence, he
is being penalized for having a hard major(Industrial Eng), IMHO. You
can still be in good academic standing gradewise, and still not have
enough hours to be a senior, which is the case with McMullen as I
understand it.

We may never know the real truth, as coaches are forbidden under NCAA
rules to discuss such matters publicly.

I hope you're right, shoe shine boy. You think Jackie Sherrill would
come back? If A&M ever had any glory days, it was when Jackie was
coach.

Last year about this time, somebody went thru all the college
football rosters and came up with an "All Name Team".

Is this person still on RSFC, and could he post 1996's
"All Name Team"??

I also heard somewhere that the Colons (ie. Chris & Kevin) have also quit
the team. Is this true? Wasn't Cris Colon the asswipe that badmouthed
Mackovic during his recruitment?

I've heard that the backup QB Kevin Colon had transferred to TCU, but I
hadn't heard about Chris Colon, the Linebacker. No big loss on either
count though. Neither of them would've played a down this year. A&M is
too deep at LB and QB for the Colons to matter.

As for the badmouthing Makovic part, I don't know. I do know that
neither of the brothers has the best reputation as a team player,
though.

secondary, and SMU will beat the Aggies for the third year in a row.

He was smart enough to stay in school as a Engineering major for 4 years
and not flunk out. That doesn't necessarily make him extremely smart,
but it tells me that he at least has something up top. I seriously
doubt he's as dumb as a rock. I may be wrong, though. You never know
what kind of "tutoring" A&M offers.

Just curious. When did K. Colon decide to transfer to TCU? Last I
heard, he was getting equal snap time with Stewart during spring
drills and the coaches were saying that there was no clear starter at
that point. (Of course, everyone knows coachspeak.)

Who, incidentally, is a kicker at Kentucky this year.

My favorite name of the current year (besides those vowel-laden names
that always give announcers so much trouble, like RT Iosefa Pua'auli
from Hawaii) has to be CB Javelin Guidry from UCLA. Although with
a name like Javelin he sounds more like a WR or maybe QB than a CB...

anymore...)

A dead-head Fred sighting. I can hear all you t-sippers now yelling --

Yeah, but even Mr. Treasure Island himself doesn't beat the best-named
Florida punter... Hank Rone. Just add an s to the front of the first name
and it becomes the most aptly-named punter in Florida history.

What about Emory Bellard?

(For that matter, what about Frank Barnett, the clueless newbie who won't be
around in three weeks, when he gets the bill for his brand spanking new AOL
account?)

He was my favorite football coach at A&M. Not very
many people realize it, but A&M pays homage to him
every midnight yell practice! Believe it or not,
midnight yell practice used to be in front of
Henderson Hall. If I remember correctly, it
was Emory Bellard who suggested moving midnight
yell practice elsewhere!

My recollection, somewhat hazy due to passage
of time is that he wasn't thrilled with the
performance of the team (we won 3 and lost 8
that year) and also with the way the players
would hang out the windows and throw things
at the crowd (mostly rolls of toilet paper).
So part of the way through the 1972 season, he
suggested finding someplace else to hold it and
so it was moved to Kyle Field.

At the risk of providing some actual football related info amongst the
bantering on this thread, I would like to provide the following:

* Kevin Colon has supposedly transferred. I had heard that he is
transferring
to a smaller college in MO, although TCU seemed to be the logical
choice.
* Chris Colon was kicked off of the team for steroids abuse. Rumor has
it that
Colon's helmet will not be the only one to roll. Chris would have
been a
contributor on special teams and provided quality depth at OLB. He's
not a
significant loss. He is not the punk that trashed Mackovic a couple
of years
back. That was Ross McCoy, who we lovingly referred to as the
"Lovell
Pinkney of A&M." McCoy, a December grad, was homesick for his
girlfriend
and left school before the semester ended. He and his chick were
supposed
to join the Army (how romantic).
* Typhail is a loss no matter how you slice it. The magnitude depends
on who
all shows up (literally & figuratively) in August. There have been
rumors
swirling around since just after signing day that A&M was going to get
Chris
McAlister, a JUCO-AA DB (6'2", 187, 4.4) out of Mt. Sac. Apparently
there
is some Pac-10 glitch with his HS transcript. About 2 weeks ago, I
heard
it was a done deal, and lately, its more than likely. If he is not
available, Shun
Horn, who was recently moved back to CB from safety, will probably be
the
man. Also, several of the incoming frosh, especially Brandon
Jennings, now
have the op to step up and be counted. McAlister originally signed
with AZ
in Feb. Mt. Sac is becoming a pipeline for A&M, sending Jimmie Irby
last
year and JUCO-AA CB Eric Jennings this year.

Again, my apologies for interupting this thread with some actual
information. Heaven forbid if we used this newsgroup for what it was
actually for.

Kevin Colon transferred to TCU, that's a definite. Doesn't anyone read
the Batt? As for Chris Colon, You're wrong when you say that he would
contribute on defense this year. About 20 people would have to get hurt
for him to play a down. A&M could field 4 teams of linebackers that
could start for most teams. That's probably why he resorted to steroid
use, if that's true(?).

For the last time, alt.college-bowl is not about football.

Huh?

Hmmm. I'm not sure about this. Why would a coach let his players stay
up past midnight on the night before a game?

How ever midnight yell got to Kyle Field, I would not say it is a
tribute to Emory (I don't pass) Bellard.

He is not eligible there yet. Upon reaching the age of 30, he can apply.
