Fuck - hit send too quickly before saying "WTF is Maximus?????"
Any list that does not include Arthur's death in Excalibur is borked:

You get the point after the first minute
True Grit.
Gail Sayers.
There are multitudes.

2 from teh comment section made my list: Breaker Morant (was my
attrib line for a while) and Sgt Elias in Platoon.
I'd also include: Capt Miller in Saving Private Ryan, Mickey Rourke
in Sin City, and Bruce Willis in Armaggedon.
Do you mean Brian Picolo? Yeah...
Two of mine were mentioned in the comments below....John Wayne in "The
Cowboys" and Gene Hackman in the Poseidon Adventure....
Also thought of Richard Gere's character in "Sommersby." (Although
probably a "chyck flick.") I'll avoid spoilers explaining why I think
so.

Yeah, I'm drunkenstoned..

Gunnery Seargant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket.
I think the dood from Gladiator, though I don't really remember that
movie. I'm sorely tempted to throw some bait in the comments about the
people who were voting for Jesus in the Passion ("he went out like a
bitch- didn't even take anyone with him!"), but I'll refrain for now.
And, I'd like to throw in Slim Pickens in Strangelove. Nothin like
riding a nuke rodeo style to your doom.

How about Gere's character in Breathless...?

Good won! Though technically he might have survived. I'm not
sure if that disqualifies him or not.

Randy Quaid - Independence Day.
Heh. "UP YOURSSSSSS"
Horseshit.
Number one of all time is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,
followed closely by Cool Hand Luke.
They should be ashamed of themselves for listing so many
lame 80s movies. Top Gun? Are you kidding me?

Whither Slim Pickens?

Do they mention Jim Brown in DIRTY DOZEN?

So now, Butch and Sundance? No Hudson (or Vasquez) from ALIENS?

No. The poor way they wrapped that up has always irked me. He was
stunned into stupidity and walked slowly out into a certain hail of
bullets? It was just dumb, particularly given that seconds later the
oncoming Germans were destroyed by the tankbusters.

Your bait stinks and so do you.
However, I'll add a couple.
1) Spartacus impaled on the cross along with all the other gladiators
along the Appian Way.
2) Since they included Optimus Prime, I'll include Old Yeller. After
saving the family from the bear, he ends up being shot for rabies.
Sacrificing his life for the family defines manliness.

well, he walked out into the hail of bullets with a purpose - to get
the detonator to blow the bridge.
I thought he had a head wound before the hail of bullets.
I believe we have a winner, but I'd put CHL first.
I would, too, the other 50% of the time I would write
that post.

From a soldiers point of view, you make sense.
But we're talking about manly man way of going out, and he pulled a
1911 on a Tiger. That's manly man movie dying right there.
They depicted that scene as if he was stunned into stupidity. He could
see that it was not at all possible to get it, and made no attempt to
run, dash, evade, etc... he just walked out and was gunned down.
Seagal, "Executive Decision". Retire the award.
Dr. David Grant: We're not gonna make it!
Lieutenant Colonel Austin Travis: You are!
But it was "Brian's Song". I'm getting teary-eyed already.
Heiman
The dude (who played Tony Curtis's dad?)who asked for a sword and jumped
into the bear pit in "The Vikings."
The latino or indian guy in "The Predator" who stood on a log, made cuts on
his chest and challenged, or surrendered to the predator.

True Grit makes you cry liek little girl.

The thing about Brian's Song is that the actual death does not occur
onscreen. It's Billy Dee Williams' tearjerker of a scene that starts
the manfaucets flowing.
