What if, instead of crowning a MNC (which everybody is happy with and
agrees to) every year, we determine the current Champion of College
Football by a title, that is passed on from team to team, sort of like
boxing.

When you vanquish the current title holder, you become the title
holder. The first champion was the winner of the first game ever,
Rutgers.

The big question is, who is the title holder now? It turns out that
the Reigning Champion of College Football is....

Miami.

Here's a list of title holders since the first game. The data were
taken from Dave Wilson website, who in turn took them from James
Howell.

I like it. It makes precious little sense, but I like it anyway.

Very interesting stuff. I always enjoy your studies. Thanks for sharing
them with us.

I wonder how much the results would change if you had started at different
times?

No system in which Rice held a national title in the past decade could possibly
be worth the time it required to think it up.

This would be cool. Will they get "Champeenship Belts" to hang over the

Obviously, they were too chickenous to schedule a title bout with the

Perhaps a better indicator of which teams are the best all time is
number of games as champion. A lot of Princeton's days as Champion
come from a 7 year stretch where they played only 11 games.

So here's an improved list, including number of games played as
champion, and score of the games where the title changes hands:

1 Rutgers 11/06/1869 6-4
11 Princeton 11/13/1869 8-0
11 Yale 11/30/1876 2-0
26 Princeton 11/28/1878 1-0
1 Harvard 11/18/1882 2-1
25 Yale 11/25/1882 1-0
17 Princeton 11/21/1885 6-5

No, but maybe the train didn't run to Cambridge back then.

Well, I thought this was interesting enough that a counterpoint was
called for: the cellar dwellar. Princeton lost the first game, so they
had it until they won, ...

Unfortunately, after Rutgers, Columbia and Stevens pass it around like a
hot potato, Rutgers has the audacity to go and beat City College of New
York, which appears never to have beaten anyone, and is to this day the
celler dwellar.

Sad.
