Much more run of the mill corruption, though:

"We are talking about the family of Manuel J. "Matty" Moroun, the
84-year-old billionaire who owns the aging Ambassador Bridge.

Gov. Rick Snyder has made it a top priority to build a second bridge a
couple of miles south, known as the New International Trade Crossing.
Every other living former governor supports a new bridge.

So do most other politicians, the CEOs of Ford, Chrysler and General
Motors, and virtually every chamber of commerce in the state.
Republicans in the Ohio state Senate voted unanimously on support of a
new bridge. The government of Canada wants this bridge so much it has
agreed to pick up Michigan's share of the costs, which the state could
repay years from now out of its share of the tolls. Washington clearly
favors the new bridge.

Astonishingly, the Obama administration has said that Michigan could
count the $550 million Canada is willing to pay for Michigan's share as
matching federal highway funds. That would mean $2.2 billion to fix
Michigan roads, no strings attached.

But the governor hasn't even been able to get a vote on his bridge in
the Legislature, and here's why. The Moroun family has contributed
hundreds of thousands of dollars, possibly millions, to state
legislators who have done his bidding and blocked the bill.

This became apparent last week, thanks to incomplete, but just-released
campaign finance records. They show, for example, that Matty Moroun, his
wife Nora, and his son and daughter-in-law gave at least $242,000 to
various state-related political funds.

Not all of this was direct contributions to legislators. State Sen. Mike
Kowall, R-White Lake, was instrumental in preventing a bill backing the
bridge from reaching the Senate floor. The Morouns indeed gave to his
campaign fund. But they also channeled money to Kowall in other ways,
according to Rich Robinson, who runs the nonpartisan, nonprofit Michigan
Campaign Finance Network.

"The North Oakland PAC was being used as a vehicle to get goods and
services to the Kowalls," said Robinson, who spends a lot of time
analyzing campaign finance reports. Kowall's wife Eileen is a state
representative who also opposes the bridge.

You might think the Michigan Republican Party would have joined its
governor and the state's business interests in backing the bridge. But
it hasn't. Now, we may have learned why. The Morouns gave $100,000 to
the Michigan GOP last year."

wtf does that have to do with anything? "every other living former

well if they support a bridge so much why dont they go and build it?

huh? you just said michigan is going to have its costs "picked
up"....if thats the case, why would there be any "repayment" at all?

so wait...im a little confused. 2.2bill - 0.55 bill = >1.5

Of course not, it's being taken from my pockets, and those are the

good....if ford and gm and such want this bridge so much, tell them to

awesome....good for them. They are using their own money(ie not mine)
to prevent something that would end up taking my money. Im starting
to like this moroun family whoever they are a lot more.

Looking at the essentials of your post you are misstating the problem
because of your obvious bias. It's not a GoP problem, it's a system
problem.

Billionaire A wants Project A stopped because it would clobber his
investment. So Billionaire A donates to politicians A-Z to vote
against the project. That appears to be a statement of the facts.

In this case it happens to be the GoP. Who do you think would replace
Billionaire A if Project A was to vote for a Right to Work Law in MI?
My guess is that it would be unions and the other party.

Now, reread my first paragraph.

Unions are for people who don't have the talent or ability to succeed
on their own. Right to work gives talented people a chance to compete
to the limit of their ability. IN obviously favors talented people
over people who have to form gangs to succeed. In IN talent won -
talent is worth paying for.

And not the direct money line back to the monopoly bridge's owner? I

corruption usually involves public monies(ie from you and me) being
diverted to the politicians.

In this case, the supposed "corruption" results in LESS money being
taken from my pocket.

Gosh darn it, if that is corruption give me more of it!!

enright? What is important to enright is that the govt not take away
his freedoms and take as little money from him as neccessary to ensure
that other people wont take away his freedoms and right to pursue
happiness.

Since a 2 billion dollar govt funded bridge failing to get funding
most certainly doesnt do that, I suspect enright is ok with this....

again, if this bridge is really needed, the people who think it is
really needed are more than welcome to build the damn thing and toll
it

Be beloved city is a sewer because of 40 years of Democratic theivery
and mismanagement. The bridge being an excellent example.

Jack Lessenberry is a local left-wing crank whose work typically shows-
up in a free local newspaper with ads that include lines such as "no
fems, fats or harries." I did a brief check of Moroun's political
donations and he gave plenty to Democrats as well, I don't see that
anywhere in the article. Furthermore Gov Snyder received the most
money from Moroun and he doesn't seem to care. This bridge mess has
been going-on for years, since before the GOP majority and shockingly
enough it won't cost anywhere near the estimates.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if a few GOP politicians are
guilty of what is being suggested, but to base this entire sorry saga
on one story from professional nut-case Lessenberry is dum and
stoopid.

People getting paid $8 an hour are probably worth about $5 per hour.
Talented people have no problem being paid what they are worth.

I liked it when $100 per week was super pay and a Caddy cost about
$900. With union gangs it only increases the number of people on
welfare.

But I love the unions - every time they got a 5% increase I got 7-10%
and never paid union dues.

Service people appear to be duds now. If you have 4 people at a table
you have to go to a 5 star restaurant for them to remember who gets

house. When the server came I had to tell him where half the meals
went. Mst cashiers I see can't make change without looking at the
register - even then they have to think about it. I'm not sure how all

When we went to Chef Prudhommes restaurant (name?) in NOLA on 8 Jan
the server was outstanding - and knowing our son, he was tipped

Canada wants access to I-75. I-75 is a major manufacturing interstate
that benefits both countries so that's why Canada will pay Michigan 1/2
billion to build a link.

Since Michigan is stalling around, Buffalo and Erie County and New york
State have suddenly decided that the Peace Bridge crossing is out of
date and could use replacing. After all since the Canadian government
is gonna pay some American government 1/2 Billion dollars to build their
infrastructure Western New York is interested.

Problem with Buffalo is there is no North South interstate that can
benefit Canada until I-77 and that's a stretch. But it might be better
that whats at Detroit now.

I-75 is what we need access to. That's where all the car plants and
assemblies are for Canadian made parts. Food manufacturing plants that
use Canadian raw materials. Kraft and General Mills want that new
Ambassador bridge as bad as GM. Toyota and Honda want that bridge too.
Shit Volkswagen wants to churn out 500 000 cars by 2017 at thier new
plant near I-75 and want to use engines from their new engine plant in,
you guess it Ontario Canada.

Look at where all the brand new car plants in the USA and Canada the
last 30 years have been built and tell me how far from I-75 they are.

Ambassador bridge is perhaps the worlds busiest commercial international
crossing. There's alot of billions of dollars in car parts crossing
that bridge.

In my mind politics hasn't changed much. I grew up hearing about Theo
Bilbo and the Kingfish, Huey Long. At one time the highest paying
political job was the guy in MS who collected taxes on all illegal

Service people have changed. There was a time when service people were
