IV. NOTES

The Tigers (and many others) had been actively pursuing OT Marcus
Clavelle (6-8, 370#) of New Iberia. Word is he's just big, not
talented. Expect LSU to back off on him with four solid OL
prospects already committed and a 5th (Johnathan Williams) close to
going with the Tigers.

LA Super Dozen member DL Eric Jefferson will apparently wind up
at Illinois.

LB Bubba Alexander committed to umat.

WR Jerry Dioron-Johnson was close to committing to LSU, but the LA Super
Dozen player was likely squeezed out of the scholarship picture by the
recent commitments of WR Nemesis Bates and WR Rodney Hudson.

1/24/96 - Forrest Davis, recruiting guru, says there is nothing that
can happen within the next two weeks that would make anyone surpass
LSU as the best recruiting class in the SEC. UT will be 2nd at worst
with the recent landings of New Orleans' LB Raynoch Thompson and
national prospect QB Tamaurice Martin.

Other SEC teams with solid classes so far: Ole Miss, Florida Sucks,
Alabama, Georgia, and USC.

1/23/96 - Max Emfinger, recruiting guru, says Tennessee and LSU are
the top 2 in the SEC right now. His top 5 recruiting classes overall
(I suspect this means the southern region and not the nation, but who
knows) were: 1.Tennessee, 2.FSU, 3.Baylor, 4.LSU, and 5.Georgia Tech.

V. LSU RECRUITING NEEDS

LSU's priorities according to Bill Elias, recruiting coordinator:

1. Fullback
2. Quarterback -- would like to sign two, but no real urgency with
Tyler, Vye, and Sparacino
3. Running Back -- 1 great one, but might be difficult with Faulk
and Cleveland
4. OL -- 4 Tackles, LSU in good shape at C and G
5. DL -- This is the strongest position on our recruiting board. We
will not turn down any big kid who can run.
6. DB -- 4 CBs and 2 safeties.

VI. WHITAKER RECRUIT RATING GUIDE

Whitaker's recruit rating guide:
10.00 - Superstar (Possible Four-Year Starter)
9.50 - Major College Star (Possible Three-Year Starter)
9.00 - Major College Player (Possible Two-Year Starter)
8.50 - Major College Potential (Possible One-Year Starter)

A late rumor is circulating and has been reported in at least one newspaper that Tee
Martin's mother is trying to convince him to stay closer to home and play at Auburn.

I wouldn't count on him going anywhere until he signs. I heard him interviewed
several weeks ago when he stated beyond almost any doubt he was going to Auburn. He
said that he was going to visit Tennessee because he gave his word he would visit.
The next thing we hear, he has committed to UT. He may very well wind up there, but
it isn't a sure thing until he actually signs.

In addition, Cedric Irvin is now said to be wavering on his committment to Tennessee
after the Vols signed a highly touted running back out of Oklahoma.

Florida and USC are the only two I've heard are having solid years. In fact, one of
those you mention is said to be having a terrible year.

I haven't heard that anywhere. I have heard LSU will have a pretty good year. Some of these so called
recruiting gurus simply play to their audiences in an effort to increase calls to their 900 numbers and
magazine, newsletter, etc. sales.

Since my post, I've heard Martin interviewed again on a B'ham radio station. He admitted he still stayed in
touch with AU assistant Joe Whitt. I do think though, he'll probably stay with UT. He apparently has asked
to be redshirted the first year and has been told that Manning will turn pro after this year.

Auburn apparently has made significant progress with Cedrick Irvin. Despite an earlier UT committment, he
is reported to have said Auburn is very much in the picture now.

I'll give you a hint. I ain't speaking of Ole Miss (although they only have a handful of scholarships) or
Georgia.

I agree, but all of this is pretty much rolling the dice until Feb 7th
anyway. I'm just going on the latest reports that he's committed to UT.

Eric Jefferson committed to Illinois, Marcus Clavelle committed to
Arkansas, and Mark Roman committed to the Bull Castraters.

EJ said in t.v. interview that he really enjoyed his visit to the STATE
of Chicago, and that Illinois' academic emphasis was important factor
in his decision. Also likes cold weather.
Analysis: One semester drop-out. Gets homesick (and real cold). Starting
for Tigers in '98 (if he can crack lineup).

Clavelle (6'8' 360 lb. OL) Says that he "couldn't come up with anything
better."
Analysis: Huge, but very slow. Shot putting ability, however, will be missed
by track and field team.

Roman said that MSU will let him be an RB instead a DB, which is where
the Tigers would have had him. Also said, "Why should I go to LSU and play
defensive back when I can go to Florida or Nebraska and play defensive
back?"
Analysis: Kills Lynn Amedee after he slams Roman to the press for a costly
fumble. Paroled under Mississippi's "He Needed Killing" law and offered a
full scholarship to Nebraska. Huskers' second team strong safety in '98.

He apparently gave another "strong" commitment to Michigan State today.
He's a fun one.

OK, Bama is definitely a step behind LSU, UT, USC, UF, and even AU, but
I cut them some slack based on the limited scholarships and the 5-6
big-time studs they've managed to land.

And keep in mind I listed eight schools with 'solid' classes. Bama would
definitely be closer to the bottom of that eight than the top.

As for Ole Miss, my DOUBLE-SECRET PROBATION recruiting source rudely
informed me today that a whole mess of their recruits will have a hard
time qualifying, so they're likely due a dose of reality. Tell ya what,
auboy, how bout if I list my current ranking of SEC recruiting classes?
That way you can just disagree with them one by one.

1.UT (bunch of visit-exceeding thieves)
2.LSU (close behind)
3t.USC (wow!)
3t.nimrods (62-24)
5.Awbunn (good but had potential to be much better; many scholarships left)
6.UGA (veeery close to AU; Donnan doing well with Goff recruits)
7.Ole Miss (in light of most of 'em being dumb as a stump)
8.Bama
<slight dropoff>
9.Arkansas (heard they had some good pickups this week)
<great gulf>
10t.UK (Timmy and the Pussycats)
10t.MSU (although they did pick up a very good LA player today)
12.Vandy (yawn)

The LSU football program didn't add any recruits to their
commitment list on Thursday, but two Louisiana players committed to
schools outside the state.
New Iberia teammates offensive lineman Marcus Clavelle (6-
foot-8, 360 pounds) and running back/defensive back Mark Roman (5-
11, 175) reportedly both told LSU they would commit last week, but
that changed on Thursday.
Clavelle, who also runs track, decided to commit to Arkansas
after much deliberation about whether he would be allowed to
participate in both track and football at LSU.
Roman followed his former high school coach (and former LSU
offensive coordinator) Lynn Amedee to Mississippi State. Amedee
accepted the offensive coordinator position with the Bulldogs late
last month.
LSU's commitment list totals 28, including two junior college
signees.
Parade All-American Eric Jefferson has yet to make his
decision known and it is reported that he will make a visit to
Texas A&M this weekend.
National signing day for high school seniors is Feb. 7.
