Even if Alabama beats the hell out of Florida next week, they have no
shot at the national championship.... If Nebraska doesn't win the award,
Penn State will take it... I hope that you Bama' fans realize that your
"great" season will end with a #2 ranking at BEST. Most likely result -
Alabama loses to Florida and then wins a close bowl game.... Second most
likely result - Alabama loses in a national championship bowl game. There
is absolutely no chance for BAMA! Nebraska is going to win it all!!!!!

Wrong!!! Alabama will beat Florida in two weeks for the SEC
championship...then a Colorado team that will be ranked #5 in
the Sugar Bowl. That will give Bama 4 straight victories over
ranked opponents, the last three being against the #'s 3, 4,
and 5 teams in the country. That, coupled with Nebraska's ugly
loss to Miami in the Orange Bowl will vault the Tide to the
mythical National Championship.

Actually, this is what Beano Cooke said...but I have to agree
with him. Penn State is playing a nobody in a nothing bowl.
If Alabama wins out, they are the champs, unless Nebraska wins
out.

The Tide will win it....they have The Bear watching over them.
Paul W. Bryant won't allow them to miss out on the MNC...

Garbage. Garbage. Garbage.

We all know about the voter's what-have-you-won-for-me-lately attitude
about moving teams up and down, and I think Bama's victory over Auburn
today, coupled with a win over Florida in two weeks (if they beat UF)
could move the Tide to #1 going into the bowls, especially if Nebraska
doesn't look impressive against Oklahoma. NU is far superior to OU, but you
can never tell in intense rivalry games.

As far as PSU...I have a hard time giving a #1 vote to a team that goes
12-0 without playing a single Top 10 foe. Joe Pa has had three undefeated
seasons end in no MNC; this could be his fourth. The only way PSU wins it
is if Bama and Nebraska both fall.

Sure, PSU blew out the Big 10, including OSU and Michigan, but Big 10 teams
haven't been too impressive in non-conference games this season
(Michigan-Colorado, Washington-Ohio State, Washington State-Illinois,
Wisconsin-Colorado, Oregon-Iowa, Minnesota-Kansas State, etc.)

NU has a big win over Colorado, a couple lesser wins over Kansas State
and Cotton Bowl-bound Texas Tech, and a shot at Top 5 Miami in the Orange
Bowl.

If Bama goes 13-0, they will have beaten, in succession, 8-3 Mississippi
State, 9-1-1 Auburn, 9-2 or 10-1 Florida, and a Sugar Bowl foe.

The question is not Nebraska or Penn State.
The question is Nebraska or Alabama.

Alabama's chance is not so great, I think.
First, they have to win Florida.
Second, they have to beat FSU or maybe Miami in Sugar.
Last, NU should lose in the bowl.

All the above can be possible, but not very likely.
Then again, who knows? Just enjoy the games.

John, I must question the use of real statistics in answering any

Official Weauxf (look, I spelled it correctly :-) Count

Bama 8
UF 4

Sorry about that, John, it should read "Unofficial Weauxf Count". Yours
is, of course, the official tally. To tell you the truth, I'm thoroughly
impressed by Alabama's showing in this matter. Usually I would expect
CIRCA (minus Tony D of course) to out-weauxf everyone in the nation
except PSU. The restraint from Gainesville has been incredible.

(But then again, they may be more concerned with beating FSU this
week),

No, but really...

Alabama fans might be the next group to collectively hate Notre Dame
with a fury.

In order to win the MNC, first, Nebraska has to lose. Penn State will
not lose (I'm betting), so Alabama's only chance is to beat Florida
and then beat a bowl opponent. The problem is, if a 7-4 or 6-5 ND
team is invited to the bowl, Alabama won't gain any respect for beating
them, and won't jump over PSU.

Why a 7-4 ND team would be invited to the Sugar Bowl for is beyond me.
I don't care how strong their alumni support is. They'll ruin Alabama's
shot at the MNC.

What's wrong with this team? Since Jackie came to MSU, MSU tied with
Memphis (2-2). At least they're much better than U. of Texas (MSU 2-0).
If we keep playing and beating OVERRATED Texas(At that time), nobody
would say this kind of crap. Remember, if Memphis reduce # of games
against SEC teams, they will become an easy-bowl team. Same thing
goes to Tulane, they played too many games against ACC and SEC.

Just simply looking at win-loss records does not help that much
when measuring a team's strength.

> - Auburn was the only real ranked team on your schedule

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
SEC is known as #1 football conference 8 SEC games is enough.
Winning out all 8 SEC games and some easy 3 non-conference games
are good enough to ensure the National Champion. Then why you
want to bother with something else? In SEC, even Florida can not
win all their games, what happens to Auburn?

Look at some other so-called big conferences, one team totally
dominates. Look at FSU's records against conference opponents.
Amazing. You never ever expect that thing in SEC, why? Simple.
SEC is tough and winning 8 SEC games is enough.

You're right. When I was in London, of all places, (yes, THE London) this
summer, I ran into a Tide fan travelling through the British Isles
with another SEC fan, a Gator. The reason I noticed them is that, after
spending approximately 6 weeks over there, the Southern accents coupled
with the American tendency to be really loud made them stick out. But
I digress....

The Tide fan was nice enough to explain, without any invective
regularly seen in forums like this one, that the folks down in Tuscaloosa
aren't big fans of the Golden Dome. To his surprise, I was able to
inform him that ND fans really don't think of 'Bama as any sort of
rival in any sport. We just don't care. There's no animosity, no
hatred, no nothing; just a rousing round of indifference where the
Tide is concerned. We speculated about the reason for this very
different situation at our respective institutions and came up with
this conclusion -- Bama fans hate ND because of the record the Irish
hold against the Tide. They feel that both on the field and off,
ND has gotten the better of them in certain situations (like the
1977 MNC), and resentment towards South Bend lingers because of it.

Don't get me wrong, most folks up here would love to see ND play
the Tide in the near future, but that's because the Tide guards
the best Southern tradition in college football. We'd love to
see how Notre Dame stacks up against it.

So far the Irish are 5-1,

Oh, Matt, how hard you try not to be smug--alas, to no avail!

I know you wish to believe we're sore because of the record, but
that's not really it. Losing on the field does not engender the
resentment you speak of. We've had similar troubles beating Texas,
and by and large we respect them.

Mainly we dislike you because you got two MNCs you did not deserve,
to which we had a strong claim: 1966 and the '77 one you mention.
I don't expect you to share that view, of course. :-)

But keep in mind, *most* people don't like ND. Why should we be any
different?

We were #20/21 I think when we played Bama thank you. ANd we gave them
a harder game than Auburn did. But then again you weren't there.
Besides, we are now #19. Again, no respect. Idiots.

Besides, if you looked at the stats, we beat most of bama's opponents worse

Well, I just had to throw around the record for kicks. :-)

We just might have a slight difference of opinion here. :-) Anyway, I do
have one question, though. Why do some Tide fans claim an MNC for
the year ND defeated 'Bama in the Sugar Bowl? Did one poll still
vote before the bowl games or what?

Good point. Join the club -- the line forms to the left. :-)

Oh, and speaking of smug, here's a classic homemade sign displayed
at Notre Dame's colossal victory over basketball powerhouse UCLA
in 1974.

"Yes John [Wooden], God roots for Notre Dame.
Signed,
Paul 'Bear' Bryant"

No flames, please. The sign was just a recognition that ND pulled
off two phenomenal upsets on within a month of each other (and in
different sports) during the winter of 1973-74.

Oh boy, now I've done it, :-)

And a well-respected 5-1, although as I've said here before, I think it was an
early 80's game against Alabama that made Notre Dame wake up and start
recruiting speed.

Bama fans tend to be pretty weary of Notre Dame getting credit for greatness
even when they have losses... it's automatically assumed that Notre Dame is
better than ANY team with the same record (or even sometimes slightly better
RE: 1977 and 1966(?) "Bama plays football, Notre Dame plays politics").

Of course, I'd love to see Bama schedule Notre Dame again. Penn State as
well. I loved those rivalries.
