In 1988, the US won six total medals in the Calgary Winter Games

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_Winter_Olympics_medal_table

With a number of days to go, the US has won something like 26
medals...and not just in the new, "X-Games" type sprots either.

What do they have to do with it?

I wonder how much the Winter X-Games is responsible for the increase
in athletes participating in the non-X-Games type events...IOW how
many of these skiers like Bode Miller got interested in skiing from
snowboarding? Maybe this is too simple minded, but put a couple of
skis on Shaun White and give him a year to practice the aerial jump
and I bet he'd be one of the best out there.

It directs the various sponsorship money to selected athletes and
sprots that give them the most bang for the buck. It manages all the
facilities where the athletes train. They pretty much have everything
to do with it.

Have you ever been an international athlete in an Olympic sport? They
do exactly *SHIT* for you until you are on the Olympic Team (which may
be a few weeks before the Olympics). Sure, they do stuff that needs to
be done, but they DO NOT develop the talent.

They need more former Husker football players on the bobsled team.

we do have to keep in mind that there were a lot fewer medals awarded
back then (138 total), whereas this year there will be about 260 awarded.

but even adjusting for that, we're obviously doing much better than we
did in 88.

the real leap came between 98 and 02. In 98, we won 13 medals, about
what we'd been averaging as a % of medals won, and then on home ground
in 02 we won 34 medals, and followed that up with 25 in Torino.

A sequence of 34-25- now at least 27 in 2010 is unprecedented for us.

How did the USOC help you? They never helped me or any of my fellow
athletes. I know what they say they do.

The USOC is a joke. What has helped our Olympic teams is the fact
that many of the athletes can make money from pro tours and/or
sponsorships. Corporate and foundation sponsors also help a lot....the
athletes used to have to line those up themselves...not sure if the
USOC is now helping there.
