What are you talking about?
Only Scaninavia/UK/Canada come across as more tolerant in regards to

But the US absolutely is not bad on a world scale.

Embarrasing, and as McCain, the Republican GOP nominee for the
President said, insulting and unfortunate.
Still, many places in the world hate their immigrants more. Italy/
Romania, Fra/Arabs, etc.
But USA claims moral leadership of the free world, so should lead by
example then.
Okay, but that's nowhere near a majority opinion and will never
happen.
Plus, that's really not a question of racism. It's mostly the
perception of an "illegal" alien receiving benefits to which they are
not entitled and "taking away jobs" from "American citizens". I don't
agree with that (many illegals pay taxes without being eligible for
benefits), but I don't think this fits the definition of "racism".
You could also include Europe's continued racism against the Jews.

I've never understood why Jewish peolpe are considered a "race".

Does that make it more palatable? Just asking, not accusing you.
No, the discrimination is there.
I just find the way terms are assigned interesting.
Like a guy is white. If it's known he's Jewish, he's suddenly not
white any more, but he's become a different race - a race called
"jews".
Muhammed Ali isn't an Arab is he?
You seem awfully sure, given our country's bloody and not-
terribly-distant history.
cb
And even more against the Gypsies.
True. They are the same race as the Arabs.

I honestly think that the country is much more enlightened today than
it ever has been, and with America becoming browner and browner, I
don't see the pendulum going back the other way.
Ethnicity, not race.

A. America is worse 95% of the time.

hypocrisy. The continual flucuation between A and B is so transparent

I doubt there's even very many people who's fantasy is ethnic

minority have that fantasy.

<Only if you nuke the entire history of language.
Scientifically, race doesn't have much meaning except for
some specific things. Blacks are virtually infinitely more
like whites than they differ genetically, but there are
some tiny differences, some fairly important.
Culturally, race has a lot of meaning. It's neat the way
little kids universally ignore it till a certain age.
I think racism has changed WRT these two meanings. My dad
is a perfect example -- he has absolutely no problem with
succesful or even hard working blacks. Inner city single
moms on welfare and/or crack hos? Not so much.
At any rate, I think racism today is less about "blacks are
genetically inferior" and more about a reaction to a culture
of that includes rap, gangs, drugs, and single moms. Granted
not all, or even most, blacks fit that, nor are those into
rap necessarily into all the other stuff, but the "bad" elements
are quite visible.
If black folks would act enough like white people the way 2nd
or 3rd generation asians do, it'd go a long way to ending racism.

How are you defining "race"? Most of the things I see that say there

Deporting illegal aliens -- not the legal ones, and not just
Mexicans or even Latinos either -- is an ethnic event.

Yes. When my daughters (starting 1st grade next month) talk about
their classmates of color, they talk about them having brown or dark
skin -- they don't use any race labels, and we plan to keep it that
way.
Of course, the fact that within our immediate family we have white to
medium brown, and the fact that they are twins, but one is lighter and
one is darker, helps them to see intuitively that people have varying
colors, not just 2 or 3.

FFS, did you think I meant there is 0.00% poverty and crime?
It's much lower than virtually anywhere else is what I meant.
I was around some of the poorest people in Finland quite often.
I would feel pretty confident saying that there is 0% poverty
(for example, Atlanta-style poverty) in Finland. Not 0.00%,
since we're dealing with human beings.
Finland has some of the most liberal gun laws in Europe. It
probably has some of the highest gun crime statistics in
Europe, although it's not comparable to the US. But no, I'm
not going to dig up statistics on those things right now.

I want to thank you gentlemen for finally opening your eyes and

Good luck with that.

Even if all of the above is true, what's it got to do with tolerance
of other ethnicities?
I've spent a fair amount of time in Denmark and Sweden with work and
they are very pleasant places. The people are friendly, things are
clean, I felt safe. But it's a stretch to say there is no poverty or
no crime. They also pay out the ass in taxes to provide for what they
have.
Also, there are certainly racists there just as there are in any
society. I've got a Swedish colleague, born in Sweden to Greek
parents and he gets mild racial abuse all the time and he's white.
Apparently amongst the not so well educated natives, anyone with dark
hair is open for abuse.

Absolutely, yes.

You mean why can science SOMETIMES distinguish between the bones of a
"black" person and a "white" person... remember the way it works is that
different ethnicities do tend show a cluster of characteristics, but
idnetifications can easily be incorrect.

No doctors care about ethnicity.

True, but this is different from those who claim there is no
such thing as race. Whether biological, or social, the concept of race
is alive and well.
Science can distinguish the bones of a secretary from the bones of a
non-secretary.
Different groups of people have different skeletal structures. So what?
Race, in the terms that it's usually used to draw distinctions
(intelligence and so on) is a useless social construct. If you want to
use the word to describe phenotypic differences between different groups
of humans, you're allowed to do so, but it isn't accurate.

Whatever. They aren't going to test a white or asian
newborn for sickle cell anemia.

Science can distinguish between the bones of a white secretary and a
black secretary. The fact that they can is pretty solid evidence that
secretaries exist.

Saying "race doesn't exist" is a political statement, not a sceintific
one. Oddly enough, some of those who say "race doesn't exist" use
race to devide people when it suits their political goals.

Depends on how they are determining "white" or "asian". If that "white"
or "asian" baby has an African father, they just might.

Yes, but only if they have a black African father.

Even if your point wasn't wrong, I'd wonder why you feel
the need to point it out. Clearly race is relevant.
--Tedward
No, even if they have a white father with a strong enough African
ethnicity.

What we call race isn't. Ethnicity is relevant.

Nope. There are thousands of African ethnicities. The ones which
may develop the sickle cell are black.
Afrikaan is a 100% African ethnicity yet they do not sufer from the
sickle cell. However, millions of blacks around the world who have
never been to Africa, who have absolutely no African ethnicity, can
have the disorder.

A white child who grows-up Bantu cannot have the sickle cell despite
the fact that the only ethnicity he has ever known was Bantu. Race
matters, and you know it.

No, they're mostly black... but as skin tone varies dramatically even among
those groups, it is quite possible for one to be white of that "black"
ethnicity.

Every single person on earth has some African ethnicity.

Ethnicity is both cultural, and biological - requiring common ancestors -
so no, a white child who grew up in Bantu would not be ethnically Bantu.

Sickle cell is an evolutionary response to malaria and is prevalent in
populations that have evolved in regions susceptible to malaria. I know
that you probably don't believe in evolution, but there ya go.
Not having sickle-shaped cells is a disorder in that part of the world,
since it renders one more susceptible to malaria. It can also lead to an
anemic response, but on balance, sickle cells have helped far more
people than they've hurt.
