america is just football crazy. it's at a new level of insanity.
and i'm not sure anyone, even the winners, enjoys it anymore. when the
only football team i live and die with, the st. louis rams, won the SB 7
years ago, i was so blissfully happy that i didn't even really care when
they lost a playoff game the next year. i was still celebrating the
championship from a year earlier. to an extent, i still am - about once
every two weeks i wear a SB champs t-shirt i bought back then and relive
the memory.
nowadays though, everything is seemingly continuously focused on the
NEXT game. my brother is a lifelong indy colts fan and yet the week
after he finally saw them win a super bowl, he wasn't savoring that. No,
when i talked to him he was already going on and on about what holes
they need to fill, who they might draft, what free agents they need to
sign and who they should cut, etc. He had already moved on to opening
day 2007.
it's the same with college football. it's become all-consuming-crazy, in
a forward-looking, too-busy-to-stop-and-enjoy-the-roses (or oranges,
etc.) way.

yep.......several years ago the nfl became the "most important sport"
in america. Now the nfl is two times as big as everything else non-
football in the sporting world combined- mlb, college and pro
basketball, nhl, boxing, golf, the olympics, tennis, everything.
for example nba fans are trying to hype up a great golden state-dallas
"upset" series.....well the rating for one of the games I see listed
was a 1.4. That's embaressingly low, and this is supposedly a playoff
game in a series with some juice.
baseball is getting there too. baseball still has a lot of fans, but
too many of the fans are way too old. It's embaressing, but when
spiketv showed a mixed martial arts fighting competition it drew way
more men aged 18-34 than one of the world series(!) games last year
being shown at the same time on network tv. Baseball's fans are old,
the nfl's fans are much younger. I know very very very few people my
age who follow mlb. I don't know anyone my age(or any guys my age)
who don't follow the nfl.
One advantage the nfl will always have over college football(and
college football is doing very well now too) is that college football
is limited in the sense that most people didn't graduate from a large
university with a bigtime football program. Some people don't even
graduate from college period. So all these people feel a little "left
out" when talking about sec football or bigten football or
whatever.....but in terms of the nfl, it's there for everyone.
