[ describes a GREAT recruiting class at Stanford -- easy for the Genius ]

Listed (why, I don't know) are the ACT & SAT scores for these players:

>Qualified with 29 ACT.
>Qualified with 1130 SAT.
>Qualified with 910 SAT.
>Qualified with 970 SAT.
>Qualified with 840 SAT.
>Qualified with 1070 SAT.
>Qualified with 24 ACT.
>Qualified with 1090 SAT.
>Qualified with 840 SAT.
>Qualified with 900 SAT.
>Qualified with 980 SAT.
>Qualified with 950 SAT.
>Qualified with 22 ACT.
>Qualified with 1040 SAT.
>Qualified with 1380 SAT.

It is clear from these test scores that all but two of these players
would have little chance of getting into Stanford under their standard
admissions criteria. I am not saying I disagree with this policy, but
I hope in the future people from schools like Stanford, Cal, & Duke (and the
media for that matter) will stop their continuous harping about how
their athletes are also top students... Yeah, right!

This recruiting write-up is to fill a request. Almost all of the info
comes from SuperPrep. Bill Walsh gets hired as head coach and Stanford lands a
ton of talent at the offensive skill positions. There is no correlation. NOT!
Walsh signed 21 recruits hailing from 10 different states. The class includes
14 offensive and 7 defensive players and was ranked #5 by Tom Lemming and
#6 by Allen Wallace of SuperPrep. It includes 11 SuperPrep All-Americans
although, it can be classified as one of the strangest that I have ever seen.
There are no OL and DB recruits.

To make his offense go, Walsh signed 2 of the nations best QB's in
SuperPrep All-Americans
QB Scott Frost (6-3 205 4.6) #2 QB of Wood River Ne and
QB Tim Carey (6-4 182 4.8) #5 QB of Los Alamitos Ca.
Frost, a tremendous all-around athlete posted incredible career numbers. He
rushed for 4278 yrds and 72 TDs while passing for 6859 yrds and 67 TD's.
Qualified with 29 ACT. Carey completed 217 of 346 passes for 3397 yrds and 36
TD's. Qualified with 1130 SAT.

Stanford also landed a spectacular RB class to fill out the backfield.
SuperPrep All-Americans
TB Mike Mitchell (6-0 205 4.4) #3 RB of Phoenix Az, Brophy
FB Greg Comella (6-1 215 4.5) #11 ATH of Westwood Ma, Xavierian Brothers and
FB Adam Salina (6-4 245 4.6) #21 LB of Berlin Ct will be joined by
TB Eliel Swinton (5-10 185 4.5) of Van Nuys Ca, Montclair Prep and
TB Quincy Jacobs (5-10 195) of Thousand Oaks Ca.
Mitchell was the SuperPrep Farwest Offensive Player of the Year after rushing
for 2201 yrds and 28 TSs. For his career, he rushed for 5670 yrds and 76 TDs.
Qualified with 910 SAT. Comella rushed for 1094 yrds while averaging 9.4 ypc.
He also scored 21 TDs and caught 28 passes for 398 yrds. Qualified with 970
SAT. Salina rushed for 1010 yrds and 19 TDs on 199 carries. Swinton rushed for
2175 yrds and 21 TDs and had 5884 career yrds. He has a 335 lb bench press and
is qualified with 840 SAT.

Although the Cardinals didn't land any OL, they did sign 2 large TE's.
TE Tommy Hanson (6-5 230 4.8) of Benecia Ca will be joined by
TE Brad Badger (6-4 240 4.9) of Corvallis Or.
Hanson caught 52 passes for 786 yrds and 11 TDs. Qualified with 1070 SAT.
Badger caught 12 passes in only 6 games. Qualified with 24 ACT.

Bill Walsh signed the nation's best group of WR including SP All-Americans
WR Charles Young (6-0 185 4.4) #6 WR of Seattle Wa, O'Dea
WR Leroy Pruitt (5-9 170 4.5) #11 WR of Blue Springs Mo
WR Brian Manning (5-11 165 4.4) #12 WR of Kansas City Mo, Ruskin and
WR Alistair White (6-0 175 4.5) #16 WR of Glendale Az will be joined by
WR Mark Harris (6-4 190) of Ricks College, Idaho.
Young's father was an All-Amreican at USC and played for the Philadelphia
Eagles. He averaged over 29 ypc on 18 receptions with 6 TDs. Qualified with
1090 SAT. Pruitt had 71 catches for over 1200 yrds and 15 TDs. Qualified with
24 ACT. Manning is a track star who selected Stanford over Tennessee and
Colorado. White hauled in 35 balls for 603 yrds and 5 TDs. He benches 305 lbs
and is qualified with 840 SAT.

Stanford signed a six-pack of LB's including SuperPrep All-American
OLB Leon Vickers (6-0 200 4.6) #24 LB of Garden Grove Ca, Rancho Alamitos and
ILB Brian Batson (6-4 215 4.7) of Encinitas Ca, Torrey Pines
ILB Justin Strand (6-3 215 4.6) of Spokane Wa, Gonzaga Prep
OLB Matt Harper (6-6 220 4.7) of McKinney TX
OLB Nick Watts (6-4 200 4.8) of Mountain View Ca, St. Francis and
ILB Evan Wagner (6-2 230) of Knob Noster Mo.
Vickers totaled 112 tackles with 5 QB sacks. Qualified with 900 SAT. Batson,
whose brother Tyler played for Stanford, totaled 130 tackles. Qualified with
980 SAT. Strand will be joining 4 former Gonzaga Prep teammates and has
qualified with 950 SAT. Harper had 88 tackles with 9 QB sacks and 5 blocked
passes. Qualified with 22 ACT. Watts benches 300 lbs and is qualified with 1040
SAT.

Last, Stanford only signed one DL. SuperPrep All-American
DE Brian Werner (6-6 240 4.8) #26 DL of Anaheim Ca, Esperanza.
Werner has over come 4 operations on his foot and ankle as a result of an 8th
grade car accident. Qualified with 1380 SAT. Brother Matt is a Bruin.

Am I the only one who finds it strange that a national publication can
list people's ACT and SAT scores? I mean, okay, they are half-celebrities
and all that, but don't they deserve some privacy?

(This is not a flame at W. Scott, of course, just my righteous
indignation at the sad state of collegiate sports.)

James,

you took the words right out of my mouth! It looks like the Farm is
ready to embark on a bigtime football program.

Am I the only one amazed who finds these SAT scores strange? What are
they scoring at my alma mater, Penn State, and at other places? I would
have finished second in this recruiting class, barely, and Stanford
laughed at my application (actually they wrote one of the kindest and
most dignified rejection letters imaginable). Other key stats for me as
a member of Coatesville High's Class of '78: 5'10'' 145 lbs 5.1 40-yard dash.

PS: Good for the players, though. I can't imagine not taking advantage
of an offer to attend Stanford.

The scores seemed pretty low to me also (not that I put *TOO* much
stock in test scores). Harping aside, I hope someone here makes sure
these recruits are allowed to be successful off the field once they get here.
