interesting.

Comments:
A&M signed 7 of the top 30. (not a bad recruiting class)
Baylor got the QB they wanted in #12 Rick Vestal, if they had not signed him,
they were going to offer a scholarship to Klingler (who was not in the Texas
top 100). Vestal signed, no scholarship for Klingler, Klingler to Houston.
Also missing from the top 30 (and possibly the top 100, the article described
him only as a marginal prospect) is Ty Detmer.
Other unheralded players included:
William Thomas All SWC LB for A&M, rookie starter for Philly.
Rodney Blackshear All SWC WR Tx Tech
Kelly Blackwell All American TE for TCU

After personally suffering through Kenny Ford's career at Oklahoma State,
I feel uniquely qualified to assert that he was *not* the best QB recruit
out of Texas.
This must have been a part of an elaborate practical joke the DM News was
intending for OU. (Ford was an option QB). Unfortunately, the wrong team
north of the Red River took the bait on this one.

Actually, Mical Padgett came back this last season and was a starter for the
Longhorns at LB. No Pro-hopeful, though, as far as I know.
But- I think it was him who returned the fumble for a game-winning TD
against Oklahoma this season ...( or was that against Miss.State..?).

No, it wasn't Padgett against OU--it was Bubba Jacques who scooped up
McKinley's fumble and returned it 25-30 yards for the game-winner.
I think you're right about the Mississippi State game, though. Padgett
had a big play in that one, but I think it was an interception return.
Unfortunately, he didn't get it all the way into the end zone... and our
sorry offense couldn't do it, it either.

Well, actually Mical Padgett did return a fumble (or a batted ball) for
a TD against OU, but not this year. I think it was in 1989, when he did
that (you know, the first game in the 3 game win streak against OU that
can't be explained any other way other than that there IS a coach who
consistently managed to get outcoached by McWilliams, unbelievable as it
may seem !)...
