I played around with this in practice mode yesterday. My best strategy was to have my first three guesses use 15 distinct letters including the vowels, the letter y, and many of the most common consonants. After that I usually could start picking off the words one by one.

Yeah practice mode is the hook that sucks you in. After we did the daily my
wife and I did three practice puzzles yesterday.

I see my problem. If it takes me 5 to get one of the words then I have 4 shots at the other 3. So (making up a word) if I guess "brave" and it's "brace", there goes my buffer and I *have* to get the other two in the next guess and the one after that. Like today, for example. At least quordle was nice enough to say "so close!"

Johnny RSFCootball

I’ve been making my first three guesses DRINK, LOUSY, and TEACH. Usually that’s enough to determine one or two words. After that I might guess something like GUMBO, JUMBO, GRAMP, BLIMP, or WIMPY to determine the remaining consonants while eliminating the swill/still/spill type ambiguities.

xyzzy

unread,
Feb 20, 2022, 7:10:03β€―PM2/20/22
to
Yeah I hear ya. If we get one of the words to that point we’ll abandon that
one for the time being and work on the others, on the theory that the
guesses we make for the others might clear up the ambiguity in that one.
That usually works pretty well for us. But yeah nothing like realizing you
have fewer guesses left than words to go so you know you can’t win it.

Johnny RSFCootball

unread,
Feb 21, 2022, 8:36:40β€―AM2/21/22

New strategy: start with BRAND, WEIGH, STUMP, FLOCK. Doing it this way, it almost always takes 8 guesses, and sometimes 9. Of course, you get only one more wrong guess after using four starter words, so dont make a sloppy mistake. This isn’t the best way to minimize the number of guesses, but it seems to almost guarantee success.

Johnny RSFCootball

unread,
Feb 21, 2022, 3:51:50β€―PM2/21/22

After more practice rounds, the four starter word approach seems to maximize my win %. It’s impossible to win in less than 8 guesses with this method, unless one of my starter words happens to be one of the solutions, but I’ve been getting in it 8 most of the time and by the ninth guess almost every time. Any four words that use 20 of the most common letters should work.

In my daily stats, I have 8 wins in 8 attempts and they’re all with 8 guesses. That’s the 4-word-20-letter opening for you. It really simplifies quortle (and octordle, etc.) in that you can almost always solve it in 8, quickly without doing much thinking. However, it makes the game a little more boring, and it’s extremely rare to get one of those sexy wins in only 6 or 7 tries.

First 9 in daily stats. My system worked in that there was only one word the could have possibly been the solution on my ninth guess, but the problem was that I couldn’t think of the word. I could have typed in all combinations of the remaining nine letters, four of which had to be in the word, or I could have cut corners and used an online word generator. So of course I decided to cut corners. Some of you might consider that cheating, but I consider it an educational experience, since I learned a new word.

The day it was beady, I couldn't figure it out for the life of me and entered words "bemad" and "begad", which I in turned learned were words (although wrong for the puzzle). I was just desperate.

I have 12 games in my daily stats. 11 wins in 8, 1 win in 9. I have some wins in 7 and a couple wins in 6 in my practice stats, before I went with the 20 letter opening strategy. However the ad hoc strategies that produced the wins in 6 or 7 also led to a loss rate of over 10%. With the 20 letter opening my loss rate dropped to 3% in practice mode. It’s a boring strategy, but it works, and you finish the game much more quickly.

With the right strategy, I suspect in the long run quortle should be easier than Wordle (and octordle easier than quortle, sedecorcle easier than octordle, etc).

In Wordle the solution might be a word with weird consonants and double letters, or a word like spill/skill/still/swill where you can get trapped. With the multi-word games, there may be one of those tough words to solve for, but there’s usually also an easier word or two find. Then in the process of solving for the easier words, you can get more information about the harder words along the way.

and an eight for me. I find that sedecordle really hard because you get what...20 guesses? for 16 words! So at a minimum that's 16 guesses. I'll give it another try next. I've never won it, always missing one or two when the buzzer sounds

Have you tried starting with WEIGH STUMP FLOCK BRAND (or four other words that use 20 common letters)? You get only one wrong guess after that, so you can’t be sloppy. However, a few of the words are going to be obvious after entering those four words, and when you fill in those solutions you start to get more info about other words. Then by the time you get to the 15th or 16th word, the harder words like dizzy and jaunt become much more obvious.

you know, the other night I woke up, probably around 4 am or so, and started thinking about words that work like that. It means I'm spending too much tought on these puzzles! I've forgotten what they were. SHIFT? ORGAN? something with an E? Anyway, now I'm back after today's sedecordle, with better results.

speaking of 3 word strategy, I've gone to that for sedecordle. Those 3 words will lead to a few easy solutions and each one will add a new letter. Quordle is tougher, imo.
