The coaching change at WVU has not only been met with much skepticism
on a national level, but is also a bit unconventional for a team who
was on the brink of a MNC game a year ago with a significant number of
returning players.

I'm curious ...

What do you expect WVU's record to be this year (with or without bowl)
and which games do you believe that they will lose?

What would WVU need to accomplish in order to confirm or deny Bill
Stewart credibility?

Not the answer you want, probably, but honestly I don't care.

I'll laugh when they lose, and laugh harder when Michigan loses and
WV"u" fans act like they've won a MNC because their former coach lost.

In the end, they'll be irrelevant, and that's as it should be.

I think that Michigan will be better than most anticipate. RR may
have been a control freak and then tried to wiggle out of his
obligation, but from what I've read in the UM press, their defense is
expected to be very good and I would be surprised if the offense took
as long to instill as it did in Morgantown. It will probably work to
his advantage that they lost so many non-system players on offense
because it should be easier to convert the mostly 3+ star athletes in
Ann Arbor on the OL, than it was to convert the mostly <3-star
athletes in Morgantown. As for the QB situation, he won a BCS bowl
with a QB and RB who did not even start until midway through their
freshman year.

There has also been quite a bit mentioned about the conditioning
program and how they are in much better shape than they were last
year.

I think they'll win at least nine and be in pretty good shape (barring
injuries, which should decline with Barwis there) by the end of the
year. I'm very interested to see how they've developed by the time
they arrive in Columbus.

Using last year's results and looking at the schedule, they appear to
be the best team in every game. They really should win out.

I think he needs to lose no more than 2 regular season games and the
bowl game to have done a good job.

He'll be pretty good this year with what RichRod left him. But
ultimately, he'll be shown the door after some so-so respectable
seasons that don't live up to WVU's expectations. Also like Torbush,
he'll get at least one, maybe two more years than he should because of
support from players and fans.

I'm not familiar with Torbush (other than name), but on paper, Stewart
already has a class for 2009 that is ranked higher than any other
class coming into Morgantown.

As for his tenure, what makes this interesting is that he took a cut
to bring in an experienced staff and basically already has a successor
on his staff in D. Holliday, who left Florida even after interviewing
for the head coaching position himself (and was considered a front-
runner).

It will be interesting.

He would be torched in the media, but I'm not sure how to gauge how
the fans and school would react. He's already done a great job in the
public eye with discipline, recruiting and appearances to garner
support for the program.

Personally, I questioned the decision but I like who he's put on his
staff and hope that they can maintain their momentum. I'd rather that
he and the staff put their own stamp on the program than fear that
they're going to mess it up and be tentative (I don't think this will
happen). The experience and the preparation should take the pressure
off of situational play in the games, and I can't imagine a coach with
30+ years of experience not having already seen just about everything.

The more I'm reading about Torbush, the more I wish I had not looked
to read more about his tenure at UNC ... not only in the descriptions
of him when he was hired, but when combined with the possibilities of
disaster due to injury, etc. it obviously didn't end well.

Thanks ... I think.

It reminds me a little of Marquette basketball. Crean leaves and

so people feel very positive.

I just think people like WVU football fans, and Marquette basketball
fans like myself, *want* to believe that the new guy is going to be so
much better than the one who spurned us before that we lose a little
perspective. The fact is that Stewart is completely unproven, and the
one coaching job he had ended in disaster. (Just like Buzz Williams
by the way.)

J.C. Watts Enslin sent the following on 8/28/2008 4:13 PM:

Illinois did much the same thing when Self left and Weber came in. Of
course, Weber's biggest weakness was and is recruiting, so he's not like
Buzz in that respect. Still, he won big with Self's recruits while Self
stumbled a bit in Lawrence, so a lot of my Illini "family" were sending
and forwarding various emails to the rest of us about how great the
change was turning out to be, etc. Me, I had a bad feeling about it
(another $1 to Obi-Wan) and it's looking as if I was right to be
cynical, as each season gets worse than the one before.

I still hope that Bruce turns things around before patience runs out
entirely, as he's a terrific human being (reminds me of Ty Willingham
and South Bend in terms of context, actually, except that Ty sucked at
both recruiting *and* coaching), but I dunno. You always hope, but
sometimes you just can't ignore the dark cloud and red flags...

I'm not sure I have any belief that Stewart will be "better" than RR,
but he certainly has a different perspective of being in charge and I
am interested to see if the "take a lower salary and funnel it to the
assistants" model will work.

Stewart is unproven, and yes, his VMI tenure ended on a disasterous
incident. However, I'm not sure that it's valid to use his record as
a head coach as an indicator. He was 8-25 (.242) and they are 23-100
(.187) since. It's not exactly a football factory. Heck, the guy
with the longest tenure since Stewart was 19-60 over seven seasons and
12 of those wins came in two seasons (7-48 otherwise).

I don't know ... while I like seeing them do well and am frustrated
when they do not, WVU still does not seem to me to be a place where
they head-hunt the basketball and football coaches. Nehlen had some
pretty bad years after stellar seasons and remained. They're one of
the few BCS universities to have had 20-year tenures in both football
and basketball heading into the 2000's, when both retired and both new
hires left on their own terms even though they struggled a bit.
Besides, RR was a wildcard being named the head coach when he came
back to Morgantown.
