I was flipping through the 1993 Grey Cup video, and I heard Don
Whittman and James Curry talking about the Sally Rann (sp) play, which
is a naked bootleg. Forgive me for asking this (moment of weakness),
what is a naked bootleg first of all, and who adopted the Sally Rann
name. I know she was a popular stripper in the 30's, which links the
name to the play, but what else can you tell me?
Just wondering?

A naked bootleg works best in Canadian rules since it requires
the entire offence to drive to one side of the field while the QB
tucks in the ball and runs around the opposite end. For example,
Flutie and the Stamps are at the right hashmarks at the Eskimos
40 yd. line. They've driven from their own 3 yd. line with a
series of short passes to the right sideline after fake
hand-offs. The defence is getting sucked in. On 1st down,
they do it again. On 2nd down, with all the motion moving right
and the linebackers shifting along, Flutie takes the snap just
like he did all the other times, fakes the hand-off again, but
immediately takes off towards the wide side of the field, where
he is likely isolated on a lone cornerback or trailing
linebacker, who must make an open field tackle. This is a very
simplistic example, but I hope you get the drift. The "naked"
part refers to the absence of any blocking for the QB, which is
why this play is not used often, for safety's sake. IMHO, Matt D.
& the Blue Bombers have had the best naked bootlegs going, but I
think that is a reflection of Matt's personality. The "Sally
Rand"term doesn't see much use anymore, but was indeed named
after the burlesque stripper.
I hope this has been helpful.

A bootleg is a play in which the quarterback fakes a handoff to a running
back, and then rolls out to one side while trying to hide the ball from the
defensive team by keeping his body in front of it (hence the terminology).
The "naked" part refers to the QB rolling out on a bootleg without any
of his teammates in front of him -- hence he is "naked", or all by himself
on the play.
Both kinds of bootleg rely on a good fake by the quarterback, running back,
and deception on part of the quarterback in order to free up enough time to
complete the play -- pass or a run by the QB.

You ought to watch the '89 Grey Cup -- the greatest football game ever played
on the planet!

Carl et al,
Often in a naked bootleg, the quarterback won't even tell the other
players, but rather lie to them and get them all going in a direction away
from where he's going. This way, the other players won't accidently give
it away with their eyes, hesitation, etc.

Actually, I have two copies. I have the origional CBC broadcast
on tape, as well as the '89 highlight video version. These video's have
saved my sanity on many off-season winter days.

Derek:)
I AM a Rider fan and I watched only the 1st and 4th
quarters. I hid in my room during the 2nd and 3rd quarters
because my nerves were shot :)
What a game that was...
