Jon,

"Dirty 30" would be none other than former Lions SB Jim Young.

This is a good topic. Hopefully, we'll get some feedback from
others. I'll put in my $0.02 for the best CFL nicknames (obvious
'Rider slant noted):

1) Hugh "Granny Grunt" Campbell
2) Dave "Robo-kicker" Ridgway
3) Clyde "The Rock" Brock

What about Tony Gabriel, #77 for Ottawa in the late seventies? Mutiple
Outsanding CFL player and Outstanding Canadian Awards! One of the best
if not THE best tight end in the game.

Who can forget Leon the Neon? He was a great kick returner in
both the CFL and NFL. As for "The Ordinary Superstar", that was none
other than former Montreal Alouette running back Johnny Rodgers who
is remembered for among other things, running into the end zone backwards!

Joe "The Throwin' Samoan" Paopao was actually stolen from a Samoan quarterback who was in the
NCAA at the same time. Of course Jim Young was Dirty Thirty (he wrote a book of the same
name). Granville Liggins was back in Calgary a few years ago for a reunion but I can't
remember where he was living (although I think it was Toronto). He did say that if he had
his way he would move back to Calgary.

Yes, you're right about Bright. He was a living argument for the
wider field and the no-yards rule. Can someone please give more info
on the Hughie Campbell nickname question? (Keith says "Granny
Grunt," while Carl says "Gluey Hughie.")

BTW, it is not a top ten list of finalists, it is open ended.

Here's some more responses:

Jackie "Spaghetti-Legs" Parker - 1950's Edmonton
Leo "The Lincoln" Lewis (smooth, powerful, and fast) - 1960's Bombers
Normie "The China Clipper" Kwong - 1940' Stamps, 1950's Eskies
Bruce "The Big Tuna" Covernton

Maybe Gregg Salter can answer this one:

Which BC Lions player in the 1960's-70's was known as "The
Portland Pig" - it's driving me crazy trying to remember his
name! I think he was a slotback or running back.(?)

Honourary mention:
"Pigskin Pete" - the Hamilton Tiger-Cats superfan with the bowler
hat, raccoon-skin coat, black & gold striped shirt and big smile,
who leads the "Oskee Wee Wee's" from the sidelines. He's truly a
living legend for whom all CFL fans should feel a soft spot. Who
is this gentleman, and can someone get some comments from him for
this group?

That was Lions receiver Jim Young. Took the nickname for the
title of his book. My favourite chapter is "NFL Brainwash and
Other Lies".

Didn't the Lions have a receiving corps in the 70s (of whom
Young was one) called the Cardiac Kids? I've heard Larscheid
and McConnell refer to that entity every now and again.

Did Lui Passaglia ever have a nickname? After the Grey Cup
they oughta call him Five Alive (that would make a good book
title, too, if he ever decides to write one).

Another nickname I haven't seen here is Brian "Howdy Doody"
Kelly.

Okay, Deryck, the thread is "Greatest CFL Nicknames," :-)
and what I was listing was my favourites. I don't know whether
Tony Gabriel had a nickname, although many agrieved Saskatchewan
fans have had some colourful terms for him, after his Grey Cup
winning catch. I agree with you that he ranks among the best
tight ends ever to have played. (I'd have to rank him with Peter
Dalla Riva on that count.) I'm keeping a list of the nicknames
that people post, and I'll post the list after a while.

I remember that, (I think, I was like 7 or something :-). He also used to wear
a fur coat on the sidelines. He started what became a bit of a
trend as well, sitting on your helmet! I'll never forget him leaping
over tacklers as well.

The Ordinary Superstar was none other that Johnny Rodgers of the

Other nicknames I can think of is ......

- Eric "The Flea" Allen of the Argos
- Jerry "Soupy" Campbell of the Eastern Riders
- Moe "The Toe" Racine of the Eastern Riders

Pigskin is truly a super guy, and I have a short story that I can post to
give everyone some insight into the man. At a Tiger-Cat game last year
(I believe it might have been against Saskatchewan), some friends and
myself were walking to my car after the contest at Ivor Wynne. When
stopping at the local Mac's Milk for some refreshment, could you guess who
pulled up to the gas pumps? You got it, Pigskin Pete!
Needless to say, I couldn't let this opportunity pass me by
without a comment from the old 'Pigger. So, I asked him how he got
involved and how many games he has attended. Astonishingly enough, Pete
told me that he has attended every home game except one since 1972 (or
early 70's)!! Curious, I asked what happened on that one game. He
responded that he had a conflict with Hamilton management, and boycotted
the game in protest. You see, the Tiger-Cats wouldn't give his wife a
free season ticket. Pete used the argument that if Ivor Wynne was
selling out every game then he would pay for one, but since he does all the
community work and publicity for free, he thought that a free season
ticket for his wife would be fair compensation. The Pigger said that
that was one of the toughest days in his life. Needless to say, we are
all glad that the problems have been ironed out, and Pigskin has been a
fixture at Ivor Wynne ever since! Today, Pigskin can be seen at all
fundraising events, press conferences, and games. I for one am glad that
he is the leader in the famous cheer "Oskee Wee Wee"!

Wow! What a response! I feel that nicknames convey so much more
info on a player and the league than most stats can. I wish I
could site everyone who E-mailed and/or posted, but thanks
anyways. Keep on sending them in. Here is the list, so far:

Joe "The Throwin Samoan" Paopao (allegedly copped from another
Hawaiian QB in NCAA)

Mike "Pinball" Clemons (present Argos)

Bill "The Undertaker" Baker (60's Sask. and former CFL Commish.)

"Sugarfoot" Anderson (Stamps in 40's, 50's)

Ron "The Little General" Lancaster (Ott., then 2 decades with
Sask., TV analyst, now head coach Esks.)

Dave "Dr. Death" Fennell (Eskies dynasty, 70's)

Leon "X-Ray" McQuay (Argos, early 70's, beloved by Stamps fans
for his timely fumble in 71 Grey Cup - tarnished a great career)

Doug "Tank" Landry (Stamps, Lions, Argos - a real loose cannon of
great potential - could only get along with equally voluble Larry
Kuharich)

Jim "Dirty 30" Young ( Lions slotback - tough and scary - coached
in BC, was also management)

Hugh "Granny Grunt" Campbell (a.k.a. "Gluey Hughie" - slotback,
Sask. 60's - Eskies GM to present)

Dave "Robo Kicker" Ridgeway (place kicker extraordianire, Sask.
to present)

Clyde (a.k.a. Ralph, a.k.a. Dieter) Brock: "The Rock," "Our
Leader, The Stampeder Beater," "Deet The Treat," "Don't Call Me
Ralph" - (QB Bombers, Ti-Cats 70's - coach, Ti-Cats to present)

Bruce "The Big Tuna" Covernton (Stamps O.G., to present)

Leon "Neon" Bright (Argos, Lions(?) early 80's - runback
specialist who went to NY Giants and almost died because he
wouldn't call fair catches. based on his CFL experience.

Herm "Ham Hands" Harrison (Stamps tight end with ability to catch
anything thrown anywhere near him - 60's)

Johnnie "The Ordinary Superstar" Rodgers (Montreal early 70's - a
real showboat - ran a touchdown in backwards way before anyone
else dared - Heisman winner Nebraska)

Granville "Granny" Liggins (Argos, Stamps 70's, early 80's -
O-line, very strong)

"Swervin" Mervyn Fernandez (Lions, late 80's - went to Raiders,
returned to BC - one of the all-time best receivers)

"Mini" Mack Herron (small, explosive tailback for early 70's
Bombers - didn't he get kicked out of Canada for marijuana
possession?)

Jackie "Spaghetti Legs" Parker (2 way player Eskies, 50's - Grey
Cup winner - former coach Esks)

Normie "The China Clipper" Kwong (a.k.a. "The Living Legend" -
2 way player, Stamps, Esks, 40's, 50's - GM Stamps 80's)

Leo "The Lincoln" Lewis (smooth, powerful, fast - Bombers, 60's)

Eric "The Flea" Allen (Argos, 80's - runback specialist)

Jerry "Soupy" Campbell (Ott. 70's - hard hitter)

Moe "The Toe" Racine (Ott. 60's)

Tony "Double Trouble" Gabriel (Ott., Ti-Cats - one of the best
slotbacks ever to play in the CFL)

Donald "Iggy" Igwebiuke (Balt. - Iggy is much easier to
pronounce)

Ray "Harley" Elgaard (Sask. to present - former Stamps db Greg Peterson says
that db's actually fear this guy coming into their lanes!)

Gil "The Thrill" Fenerty (Argos, late 80's - went to Saints)

James "Duke" Ellingson (Sask., Ott. to present - under used
slotback)

Joe "747" Adams (Sask. early 80's - all promise, no payoff)

Wayne "Thumper" Harris (Stamps, 60's - notorious hard-hitter and
team leader - watch for his son, Cooper, to show up in CFL at
linebacker soon)

Earl "Earthquake" Lunsford (Stamps, early 60's record-setting
running back, GM Bombers, Stamps)

"Long Gone" Jim Thomas (no info as of yet)

"Prince" Hal Ledyard (Bombers early 60's - the best 1-2 punch of
QB's of the era: him and Kenny Ploen)

"Indian" Jack Jacobs (no info as of yet)

Honourary Mention:

"Pigskin Pete" (the Ti-Cats superfan with the bowler hat,
raccoon skin coat, black & gold striped shirt and big smile, who
leads the Oskee Wee Wee's from the sidelines - see Oskee Wee Wee
Tim's post for a wonderful anecdote!)

Phil "The Bleacher Creature" (sorry I don't know his last name -
he is the guy dressed in red & white at Stamps games - he lost a
leg to disease last year, yet came back from the death bed *no
exaggeration* to cheer the Stamps - a living hero)

The Superfan guy from Sask. (who used to wear the exploding
helmet, cape, green & white makeup, and siren, until the fire
department shut him down - ya gotta love the guy! What was his
nickname? Wasn't it "Superfan?")

Please send your favourite CFL nicknames in by posting to the

Just thought I would pass this along, in Baltimore recently a teenage
girl was gang raped by 4 teenage boys who have all been caught. In the
neighborhood where that occured, the people who live there held a vigil
last night to protest the violence and help support for the young girl, I
was watching the news about it, and who was there? Don Matthews, the
Colts coach! I thought it was a real class act for him to go to that. I
have never seen a football coach nor one of the Orioles coaches at
anything like that, so I think it shows how much class the CFL, the
Colts, and Don Matthews has.

I think that Memphis should be allowed to have a 100 yd. field and 15
yards endzones. The endzones should not be allowed to go shorter than 15
yards, the extra 10 yards in the field doesn't make that much of
a difference. I don't think it is going to have an affect on field
goals, I don't think it is going to cause the league to move the
goal posts, i don't think it is going to cause the end of the CFL, or the
creation of a new league. It is the wider field, and the longer endzones
that really help the offense out, not the 10 yards.

I also congratulate all the teams that reached their season tickets
goals, especially Ottawa, seeing that that is the most season tickets the
team has ever sold. My Colts invoice comes next week, and even though
they got rid of my student price ($9) I am still renewing at the cheap
price ($15).

Jon,

Slight error here: Clyde "The Rock" Brock was an OT with the
Saskatchewan Roughriders from the mid-60's to the mid'70's.
Nicknamed the "Rock" because at the time, he was the largest
player ever to don a 'Rider uniform (6'7", 280 lbs).

I hate to have to jump in here :), but Clyde and Dieter were two different
people. Clyde Brock was an OL for Sask, I believe. Dieter was some guy who
played quarterback for a while, but I don't remember much about him. :)

: Tony "Double Trouble" Gabriel (Ott., Ti-Cats - one of the best

: slotbacks ever to play in the CFL)

Actually, I would have to say that Tony Gabriel was a true tight end, from the
era when there still were tight ends in the CFL (there were also slotbacks,
but many teams had one of each).

: The Superfan guy from Sask. (who used to wear the exploding

: helmet, cape, green & white makeup, and siren, until the fire

No! I think you're confusing him with someone from Calgary. The person
in Sask. is/was known as The Flame.

I wanted to add a couple more to the list:

James "Quick" Parker -- Edmonton, Toronto, and BC rush end. Used to wear a
feather in his helmet. Guest coached with the 'Riders a couple of seasons
ago, probably is coaching somewhere else in the CFL now.

Lyall "The Woz" Wosnesensky (sp). Defensive lineman for Cgy and Sask -
developed the famous "Woz-tusi" dance after a sack in 'Riderville.

Billy "White Shoes" Johnson -- overpaid, underacheiving, and proof that
coming from the NFL doesn't guarantee dominance in the CFL.

Sam "The Rifle" Etchevarry (sp). He played QB, for either Mtl or To -- I'm
not sure which.

Then there is the grand old ambassador of the CFL, Annis Stukus, whom I've
heard referred to as the "Loquacious Lithuanian" on the radio, although I'm
not sure whether that is a "valid" nickname for him. Anyone who knows any
more about him, please add to the info.

...and the whole Sask Roughrider team was referred to as the "Ronnie & George
Show" during the Lancaster-Reed era.

of the 35, and that kickoffs come from 10 yards deeper, etc. This is *not*
a good situation. How will that affect stats like yards gained, first downs,
etc., not to mention the scores of games? Then there is also the problem of
credibility. Any team that wants to use a smaller field (endzones or otherwise)
should be REQUIRED to rectify the situation within a certain number of years,
similar to the way NHL teams are granted franchises that can play in smaller
arenas provided they have a better venue in the works (Calgary, Ottawa, San
Jose, etc.). Unless the stadia are constructed of titanium, it can't be
much more expensive to renovate than to build a new hockey arena (even a
modest one). Perhaps the expansion fee(s) could be used to pay a fraction
of such renovations.

Just one more note on the Memphis field, there was a short piece in the
Washington Post 2/4/95 (Look on the front if you get it, I am in the
crowd at the grocery store because of the storm we got down here :) )
that says the Memphis stadium would only need the field shortened
temporarily because they want to field a team this year, and they don't
have the time or the money to renovate the stadium enough to get a
regulation field in. I think after this season they will be able to
renovate the stadium enough to get the field in.

On the LA situation, I think it would be cool if a team could play in the
Rams old stadium, then they could be called the Anaheim Mighty Rough
Riders (Or Roughriders...not to pick favorites). :)

Best possible scenario for the league, the fans, and the game:

Memphis: We can't modify the stadium in time for the 95 season, but
we'd like to play anyway. What do you say?

League : No.

I realize that several other sports (baseball, hockey) play
in various cities with different sized parks or stadia as the
case may be, but this is football. Football is about real estate:
defending property and seizing land. Without a standard, the integrity
of the game is lost. The NFL learned this in the 1930s when they
made an attempt to bring their game indoors.

Since a suitable site couldn't be found, the league used
an 80-yard field with the provision that once the ball moved
beyond the 50-yard-line, it would then be moved back 20 yards.

If this sounds crazy, that's because it was. A major
league game (or at least one trying to achieve that status) was
using playground rules.

I hope the CFL understands this and tells Memphis to
either hurry up and get the Liberty Bowl ready or else we'll
see you next year.

I think we should all take a minute and reflect on the great success
that the Baltimore Colts have had in the CFL! Could we have hoped for
a better team in the US? Is it possible that we could have better
ambassadors of the CFL game?

A classy canadian staff and veteran canadian experienced players
really create a stark contrast against the less experience Pirates and
Posse. It just goes to show that a team has to learn the CFL rules to
play well in the CFL. It's a different game altogether!

Of all the active teams in the CFL, I feel that the Colts are perhaps
the most spirited and consistent. When they get on the field, they are
not just playing to win the game, but for the honour of their city and
the CFL. In short, the franchise is a crusader against the oppressive
NFL.

Deryck. (P.S. - I still love the Ottawa Rough Riders, the Colts are my

Thanks, John. A lot of CFL fans have the crazy idea that Ottawa
doesn't deserve a CFL franchise. But the fact is, we have been plagued
with lousy management and unmotivated players for several years. What
happened to our city could happen to anyone, but that doesn't mean
that the fans don't want a football team! We do!

Our stadium, (Frank Clair), only has a capacity of 30,000. We sold
16,000 season tickets already, and more are on the way. This is pretty
phenomenal when you remember that we have had back to back 4-14 seasons.
Heck, we wouldn't dream of watching any other sport! I work for a

Saturday, the first thing we do after work is run out to the football

-Capital Punishment - Ottawa D-Line of the mid-70's. Among

You know, I was just thinking about how some people said "Maybe Toronto
SHOULD get an NFL team so they could pay outragous prices and see that the
game really isn't as exciting as the CFL." The same could be said for this
shortened field stuff. If the league does bow to the god of money and toss
more of it's integrity to allow Memphis in for '95, we'll get to see first
hand that 10 yard endzones suck as the offence stalls in the red zone on
nearly every play.

Maybe then we won't see this arguement come up over every new stadium that
can't meet the size criteria.

Just a thought...

I agree that this will be an interesting opportunity to see first hand
just how much difference the 20 yard endzones make (quite a big difference,
I suspect). I envision many awkward pass routes by receivers who are used
to having a little more room to move around once they cross the goal line.
Memphis may even have something of a (very slight) advantage since they'll
be used to playing with the short endzones whereas visiting teams will not.

Has it been confirmed that the 10 yard endzones with a 110 yard field will
be the option chosen? Or is the CFL still considering going with a 100
yard field with 15 yard endzones? The latter, I'd think, would have a
greater impact on overall play (starting from the 35 means one first down
and you can almost try for a field goal).

Hmm... maybe to reduce the number of field goals they could move the goal
posts to the back of the endzone :-).

Actually, everything I've heard about Memphis suggests that the small
field will only be used for this season and will be upgraded to a
regulation size CFL field next year when time (and money) permits the
necessary renovation to take place.

Aside from various other arguments, I think that having short endzones would
be a competitive DISadvantage in the long run. While it will give a
``home field'' advantage, they'd essentially need to play two different
defences. This would lead to a great home record, lousy away record...

As long as the Grey Cup is never held on an abreviated field,
Memphis would always lose somewhere in the playoffs when they venture outside
their home stadium. Actually, they might never hold a home playoff game.
And that would force a change...

And I hope everyone looks at it this way. If the CFL feels the need
to change things, wouldn't this be the way to do it? I also believe
it will fail miserably. Especially on the kicks.

That is how I understand it also. I believe that Fred Smith wants the
normal CFL field, but there isn't enough time to renovate...

I can't believe that anyone would even consider allowing a team in the league without an
appropriate sized stadium. What are the league rules? One of the rules which makes
Canadian football distinct is the larger field. If you want a franchise than get a proper
field. This is just another example of the CFL selling its soul for American franchises.
There is no way that Memphis should be allowed to play with this field. If you allow them to
play this year then what forces them to change the field in the future?

I don't think it will be the same story as BC Place. This could not possibly
change the rest of the league. No body wants smaller endzones. That's
the whole reason why people watch Canadian Football, cause of the wide
open scoring. Fear not my friend. Memphis will have small endzones, produce
a good team, make money for the franchise and the league, and then next
year have a newly renovated Canadian size field.

...and the world will be good.

I'm sorry, but I just have to salute that kind of attitude. "Damn the
facts, the guy is scum!" I'm impressed!

By the way, I'm personally ambivalent about Mr. Matthews. But we Pirates
fans do hate that jack-ass who coached Las Vegas! Runnin' up the score, and
then saying he and Forrest were good friends -- good friends my ass! All he
did was destroy Forrest's alma mater, SMU. You never hear Forrest saying
Meyer is his big buddy. I'm glad the jerk is out of a job!

Nice to see a Pirates fan - how are the Pirates being received . . .
I recall that you had about 35000 people at the last home game - right.
But how is the team looked at by the locals and the press - does it get
the coverage and the word of mouth it needs. How are season ticket sales?
