I remember reading a Street and Smith's article on "50 Ways to
Improve the NFL" a few years back. The author indicated that one
of the ways to improve the game of football would be to eliminate
these so-called "specialist" players: the ones who only kicked or
punted the ball during the course of a game. His idea was to
force teams to use kickers or punters who regularly played other
positions.
I don't know if I agree completely with his premise, but the fact
remains that several years ago, kickers and punters in the CFL
regularly played other positions. Perhaps it's because of
increased roster sizes, but you don't see it as much anymore. I
have compiled a partial list of CFL kickers and punters who went
the extra mile:
1) Jack Abendschan, K and OG with Saskatchewan
2) Wally Buono (yes, him), P and LB with Montreal (yes, them)
3) Terry Bulych, P and RB with Saskatchewan
4) Don Jonas, K and QB with Winnipeg (am I remembering this one
correctly?)
5) Al Ford, P and RB,WR,DB with Saskatchewan
6) Johnny Evans, P and QB with Montreal and Edmonton
7) Lui Passaglia, K/P and WR (backup) with BC (early in his
career - it was on a pass reception that he scored his 1 TD in
the CFL).
8) Jan Carinci, K and RB,DB with Toronto and BC
Are there any others?

Keith

Somebody (Butch?) already mentioned Mike McTague.
A few others:
Larry Robinson (Stamps) : PK, defensive back and (3rd string) QB - which he
actually played a couple of times.
Jim Furlong (Stamps): Punter, linebacker
Jackie Parker (Eskimos): One of the all-time CFL greats. QB, DB, PK, everything
Bill Van Burkleo (sp?): Calgary/Ottawa : Punter, DB, last resort QB
Bernie Faloney (Hamilton) QB and punter
Basically, at least through the 60's almost every CFL kicker played another
position. Dave Mann was a great punter with the Argos, but I can't think of
what else he did.

Mike even managed to boot the ball with Saskatchewan in 1985.

Larry Robinson DB-PK with Calgary
Billy Van Burkleo QB-DB-PT with Calgary
Jim Furlong LB-PT with Calgary
Neal Beaumont DB-PT with BC
Gary Lefebvre WR-PT with Montreal & Edmonton
Moe Racine OT-PK with Ottawa
Ed Ulmer DB-PT with Ottawa & Winnipeg
Dick Adams DB & PT with Ottawa
Joe Zuger QB-DB-PT with Hamilton
Sonny Wade QB-PT with Montreal

Most of these guys were real good football players as well as good kickers.

Wasn't there a quarterback for Montreal in the late 70's or early
80's by the name of Sonny White who also kicked?
I could be wrong about the name, but for some reason that name
rings a bell.

Oh man! Can you imagine trying to block the punt of a guy built like
a house? Can Chris Walby punt? :-) Can anyone imagine Hec Pothier or Bob
Poley lining up to punt? :-)

Loooooo was a QB at SFU and was the Lions thrid string QB for years. I
remember his punt in the '85 Grey Cup where he elected to pass instead of kick
and made the completion!

Not that there's anything wrong with that! Not at all. "1967"
Here's a few:
1) Mike McTague, P/WR with Calgary and Montreal in the 1980s.
2) Guilio Caravatta, K/P/QB currently with B.C. His QB
credentials are marginal, but he has taken a couple snaps there
this season and on a couple other occasions. I wouldn't include
Pete Gardere of Sacramento because I don't think he's taken a
snap at QB.
3)?? Gerry Organ, Ottawa. He was a K/P when I watched him, but I
thought I heard that he'd played a little receiver at some point.
4)Mervyn Fernandez, B.C. - In his last season with the Lions (the
first time around), Merv punted a couple games when Lui was
trying out with the Browns. Got hurt making a tackle and ended up
missing about six games.

What about Ted Gerela??? PK and DL (or was it OL?) for the Leos, when his
little brother was a PK in the Niffle (early 70's???)

Ted Gerela played running back for the Leos but it was a very rare
occurence. He wore jersey # 35.

Didn't SB Jock Climie of Ottawa do some backup punting last season?
The 94 FFR book has him down for 15 punts last year.

Don't forget Harry Holt, a tight end for B.C. who also did the kick
offs (but not the field goals) and later did the same thing for
Cleveland for one year (then broke his leg, ending his career, in a
pre-season game the next year).
Robin
I remember Harry Holt doing kickoffs in 1981 and 1982. Correct me
if I'm wrong, but I thought he was the last guy to regularly play
tight end in the CFL, too.
The Lions have had a number of "other" guys handle kickoffs for
Lui. Holt, Jan Carinci, Greg Vavra, Guilio Caravatta come to
mind.
Butch Kamena
Scott,
I think Terry Baker might have been hurt for a couple games or
something. I also remember that one of Climie's "punts" was at
the end of a half. He caught a pass at about the 35, turned
upfield and kicked the ball through the end zone for a single.
Butch Kamena
Also in the early seventies there was a backup Canadian QB and punter with the
BC Lions named Eric Guthrie. Others off the top of my head, Sonny Wade
(Montreal QB/P), Joe Zugar ( Hamilton QB/P).
Rob McEachern.
> are there any others? (punters/kickers who play another position)
Well, there was Mike McTague in Calgary a few years ago. Played slotback
when he wasn't punting.
