I'm considering signing up for lessons at Metropolis Fencing in NYC and
was wondering if any of you have had experience with them...is the
teaching staff good, do they treat classes like herds of cattle, do you do
workouts at the start of each class or is that pretty much left for you to
do elsewhere, how much equipment do you supply and how much do they, etc.

Any info would be useful. Thanks.

I think Metropolis is a good start. It's a place to test the fencing
waters. I would imagine the rates are reasonable and they do have some
favorable teachers. Here's a list I made with some info on them:

Champion •Ukraine Champion •Gradute-Major in Fencing from the Institute of
Physical Culture-Lvov, Ukraine

They like most fencing schools provide all needed equipment (I never used
any equipment other than my own.) You will need sneakers are a tennis,
light glove or Fencing Glove. For a newbie, its good. I don't know of any
other fencing school in New York that is in a "good Manhattan" (upscale)
area that is reasonable. I think rates are $20 or $25 bucks for per 3
classes (each an hour).

*** So everyone knows... I am making a great New York City based fencing
page for everyone. I am collecting and slowly converting a mass of useful
articles and information for the site. If anyone has anything to contribute
(Articles, pictures, hints, suggestions) please send me Email.

I am also compiling a list of good fencing schools and instructors... I
welcome anything. The site will be open to every weapon AND while I am not
involved with SCA I would be more than happy to support them best I can.

I also plan to "TRY" some outdoor competitions with a small but nice pot
for the top 3 fencers.
If anyone is interested in organizing such events with me please send me
Email.
