women sports coverage (July 14 radio news program)

(ouch ! ) game going on.....but didn't have the patience to type this
out on my android.
It's a pod cast from a very well produced local radio program, KBIA FM
Global Journalist. Hands down my favorite international radio news
program for the past 5 or 6 years.
The previous host, Stuart Loory, had been approached to syndicate it,
but he didn't have the time and energy to make that step.
Last weeks episode was on coverage of women in sports. One female
sports journalist was on line from India. The other (ESPN journalist,
Mizzou alumni) guest was in Kansas City Mo.
I've only listened to the first half....but it's good stuff,etc.

The lack of coverage of the women's world cup in India surprised me.

P.S. A NAIA college soccer coach was among the group of friends
watching the game on Sun.
He didn't think the Japanese player should have been red carded.
Didn't think it was a foul,etc. Was interesting to hear that sort of
commentary in person.

lifelong fan of the game i would disagree vehemently with
your friend about that red card. it was not a violent foul
like most of the red cards that we are used to seeing but it
was nearly textbook red card material.
it was a foul because the player went to the ground from
behind, missed the ball and as a result of her trajectory
and the contact that it caused took the player down. out in
the field it might not have even been a yellow card, but
because it was the last defender, had Alex Morgan (USA) not
been taken down she would have had the ball at the top of
the 18, one on one with the goalie, a clear goal scoring
opportunity.
despite the lack of violence and possibly even intent to
foul the action exactly fit the definition of one of the 7
red cardable offenses, a foul from behind to deny a clear
goal scoring opportunity, and the referee had no choice in
the matter.

Fair enough......
I tossed that in at the end of the post as a " and I heard THIS
during the game yesterday" comment.
Anyway...we have close mutual friends but it's the first time I'd met
him. He may have just been making lighthearted taunts at the
television.
In his guy's defense he did play for Duke Univ., Saint Louis Univ. in
college and followed that up with 8 years of professional soccer here
in the United States. He also has a United States Soccer Federation
“A” coaching license and a National Soccer Coaches Association of
America Premier Diploma.
(all this according to a short bio i just googled)
What are your futball credentials Fan man?

It sounds like you haven't listened to the Global Journalist interview
(I've actually only listened to the first 15 min.).
The journalist mentioned that even when India has NO vested interest
in a men's world cup it becomes a national obsession.
I'll listen to the 2nd half when i have time. Great international news
program though. Look at the past interviews. Impressive program,etc.

license). if you like you can look up the laws of the game.
yeah, soccer has "laws" not rules, whatever. anyways,
check out the laws of the game, look up the 7 red cardable
offenses and see if you think that play fits the definition.
it was pretty cut and dry to me.
Soccer cred: i didn't play in college. I ran XC instead,
then played ulitmate. but i've been a follower of soccer
for 25 years. we used to go to the soccer store and rent
premier league videos back in the days before it started
getting on here.
as far as your friends friend goes . . . Go Devils!
the india thing . . . wouldn't that have something to do
with the way women are viewed there more than anything else?
that may be the incorrect result of a big sweeping
generalization of the Middle East on my part, but that is my
first blush reaction to that without listening to that
report.

Back in my youth when soccer was on my radar (pre video stores of
course) my Mom was a forward thinker on a few fronts.
She'd allow us to watch European soccer on PBS (sat or sun
a.m.) ....but she'd kick us outside if we turned on the incessant
Cardinal baseball programming...or god forbid American football.
Anyway....long live soccer. The 2nd or 3rd greatest sport created by
mankind.
