in 2-2 finals on exciting three game series that went to the
3rd game tied at 4s, universe point, O-Pig gets improbable
and huge layout catch back of endzone that seemed all the
world to be out but the tape flapped. Sideline guy thinks
in, camera inconclusive, they eventually go back to thrower.
Two passes later Hennessy player gets a clean D -- BUT it
macs up in air and MacGougan from O-Pig hauls it inside goal
on a layout and game is over in dramatic fashion.
Semis was O-pig over Jolly Dahl Colorado team and Hennessy
over Horned Melons (featuring woman's line of Witt, leDonne,
Dorko and Beach). Quarters featueed a conroversial exit by
Venom, defending 2-2 champs from NYC/DC/etc when they were
up 8-1, allowed Hennessy's speedy guys to climb back in and
ebentually the horn sounded at 10-7, hennessy scored the
point to make it 10-8 and they shook hands, declared the
game over, and most people prepared for semis. 10 minutes
later Hennessy player comes back with the correct ruling
that if it's within 2 you play the next point. Half of
Venom's team had already left. They agree to play and
Hennessy gets a 2-pointer, then the turn and score to win
11-10 over a stunned Venom team.
3-1 was Yellow Sub with familiar faces (it was their reunion
year i heard at one point) over a team that featured a bunch
of Hooray men (now playing for Philly Open team Southpaw).
Yellow Sub won the first two games, the second on a floaty
forehand short endzone from Neva to Ross who skied for the
goal.

ended up booted out of their divisions on Friday night to be
relegated to a non-competitive 6-team random divison on far
fields.
Also they do a terrible job at recycling. So many bottles of
powerade and water and everything else-- i can never
understand why the tournament doesnt buy 500 blue trash
bags. It's sooooooo easy.
some other trivia tidbits
-- of the 440ish teams, my guess has been that about 25-35%
of those players double-up and play in both divisions. So
the number of actual participants is lower
-- USA-Ult is likely going to start up a Championship Series
for Beach Ultimate next year so people/teams ought to start
preparing for some action next summer-spring-fall (when they
hold the series is anyone's guess, but summer seems likely
to me, eh?)
-- Clay-Z danced like a dancin' fool!

not be more correct, that is atrocious.
However, do you really think the "double up" numbers are
that high, because I don't think it's anywhere even close.
I would say 10% would be the absolute tops on that. I've
been going for six years and I know some people who play in
two divisions but it's never anywhere near a third of my
team, it's usually about one or maybe two players.
I know you've got more years of Wildwood and ultimate than I
do, so this isn't an experience content, but I think some of
those long nights at the Bolero may have mixed up your
statistics.

across all divisions of play (open, beer) that submit bids
for both 2-2 and 3-1 divisions. I can think of a bunch
off-hand -- Swarthmore, Show Your Junk, O-pig, Horned
Melons, Yellow Sub, Hennessy, West Coast Avengers, Prestige
Worldwide, etc etc etc...
But Chris Wicus of the USA-U can tell us the real numbers,
since he does the rostering and he was there. How many
people double-up for WW, Ficus? The people demand an
answer!
And check this out, coverage on the front page of the Sports
section -- i'll repeat, the Sports section and not
Weekend/Lifestyle -- of the Atlantic City Press. A good
article, well-written, doesn't go too much into the
overexplained game play and dippiness. Covering the two
local South Jersey teams (from the town of Vineland) was
nice and fitting. A good piece overall --

Is that 440 teams present, or 440 teams paid?
My team had 3 opponents fail to show up, and so we played a
total of 3 games all weekend. Are these teams really
absent, despite having paid the tournament fee? Or do they
show up, see that they are supposed to play 2 piers away,
and decide, "Screw that, we'll just stick around here and
find teams to play?"
It was difficult to communicate our problems to anyone
because we were a 15 minute walk from HQ. But when we did
trek back and ask if we could get some money back, we were
told there was nothing they could do.
Was this a common experience? I have never had a bad
Wildwood experience until now, and I understand how chaotic
it must be to organize this massive tournament, but I must
say my entire team was very disappointed with only getting
to play 3 games while others who paid the same tournament
fee got to play 6 or 7.
We also were a little annoyed when our first opponents did
not show up on Sunday, because when we reported our scores
at the end of Saturday, we informed the organizers that one
of the teams in our pool had not shown up. We suggested
they contact their to-be-opponents for the first round of
Sunday, but we were told they didn't have any way to get in
touch with them. Don't they have a contact list for all the
teams? Apparently they didn't have a way to get in touch
with us either, as our to-be-opponent was also a no-show and
we showed up Sunday morning just to stand around some more.
Some suggestions that might come at minimal cost:
-2 or 3 "mini-HQ stations" near the boardwalk with schedules
and maps. Making everyone walk down to the end of the pier
just to see where they are playing is pretty silly.
-Or, get that schedule online so people can access it from
their mobile phones.
-More pick-up trucks to go around collecting scores and taxi
injured people around.
-Publish a list of contact info for each team, online and at
HQ.
If there aren't enough volunteers to do these things, then
jack up that tournament fee and offer more free bids for
volunteers!

The positives where the party, weather, funcade and
competition.
Things that could help next year:
Deff need multiple HQs. Walking that far to pick up
supplies, report scores and ask questions is not efficient.
Have 15 mins between rounds. 2 of our teams where in other
div and wanted to stop early so they could make it to their
other field.

My team who came all the way from Atlanta (Southern Fried
Whaleshark) was signed up for 2/2 open. I show up to the
party Friday to check in and they can not find us in that
div. We had been moved to 2/2 beer in a sub pool of 6. All
other pools were 4 and had x-overs on Saturday. Our pool
played 4 games Sat and then the last pool play game 1st rd
Sun. Then the same teams were put into a bracket.
So with almost 450 teams we were expected to play the same
teams in semis and finals. Not cool.

SFW will be back next year and we hope to have a free bid as

That's asking a lot. The organization was far from optimal
this year, but you really expect them to give all 6 of you
free bids?
Hell, if you get a free bid, they better give us a free bid
plus hotel room, seeing as we played 3 games. Total.

My team had a great time and I thank the TDs for the hard work but I
think we all know they messed up with a couple of teams this year. I'm
sure they will take the feedback and this tourney will continue to be
amazing.

Or they could keep that money and offer free bids/hotel
rooms for volunteers to make the tournament run more
smoothly. I think it's just crazy enough to work.

i was sitting directly to the left of where Riley lands in
this shot so he basically came directly at me and crash
landed in a heap in the sand with his eyes looking up at me
like a sand shark. I was staring at the play the entire time
and thought no way he could get it.
And then somehow he made the catch and I saw some tape flap
behind him. Since my angle was absolutely impossible to see
his feet I just stared blankly at Riley as he got up. I was
trying to figure out why someone so familiar to me was
playing on this OPig team. It wasn't until later that I
realized it was Riley from Prospect Park/NYC/ etc and that
i've played with/against him several times and trained a bit
with him for Nationals last year.
Anyway, Zagoria next to me stood up and started an animated
motion of signalling him out. I didn't think he had a good
angle on it either, but what could I say? I wasn't in
Zagoria's seat, maybe he was right, sure looked to be a
weird one.
Kevin talked to the defender from Hennessy about the call
for a while. He basically said this, "I don't know if I was
in or out, but one guy over here is saying out, and one guy
over there is saying in. I'm just not comfortable with
giving up the disc. I'll send it back but I'm not going to
say it's a turnover when nobody knows."
Then they looked at pictures from a camera on the end line,
maybe even a video. Still inconclusive. They sent the disc
back. A fair and practical decision in ultimate and
justified too.
Then the crazy d'd disc that was caught for the game-winner
came about three passes later. That's when Hennessy's Adam
Sigelman blew up and got angry and stormed off the field,
which was rather a poor display of sportsmanship but this
was more about being upset about losing a very tight, very
emotional, very great game on two very bad breaks for his
team at double-game point.
About 20 minutes after the game ended, perhaps an hour, i
can't remember, I was talking with Moshua Jarkette about the
play and how hard it was to make a call even amongst us on
the sideline. Standing next to Mosh and I was his new
Ironside teammate Sigelman. At some point Sigelman said,
"excuse me, I think I should apologize to O-pig and say a
few words." and with that he walked over to O-Pig.
So all in all, good sportsmanship all the way around, imho,
and a series of very dramatic plays at the end of a great
match.
