The topic about lebron playing ultimate got me thinking
tangentially...

I feel like at one point or another every college team (or maybe just
me) is walking to class and you pass by a guy (or girl) who's just
absurdly tall, like 6'8"! And you draw an elaborate picture in your
head of just having that individual stand in the end zone and pull
down any floaty crap you put near them without even jumping. But then
somehow it rarely pans out that way.

So I'm curious, who has had any success in this story where so many
others have failed? Has anyone ever successfully recruited and trained
some absurdly tall player? How tall? How did it go?

Please answer or I might have to do homework!!!

Cal-Berkeley has two identical twin 6' 7" juniors. Both have good
throws and obviously can grab higher throws with ease.

steve leshinski is 6'10' played with old sag a few times. was on my
summer league team once, it was awesome. only time i saw someone get a
disc in the endzone when it was thrown to him was to bait him in.
otherwise steve was excellent at reading the disc, which is perhaps
slightly less important as a super tall guy, but is always key

the super tall guy from Philly Rage, circa 1998 or so, was pretty
good. Can't rememember his name

he was the only member of the Flying Dwarves fool's fest team to be
over 5 foot 6. so at 6'10 or 6'11 or whatever, he was pretty good

mooney is taller than i am. 6' 6.5" i think. thats not short.

I am 6 foot 7 and i've played for like 3 or so years now. I was
recruited by UCF and played with them for a season. They made me
really sick. I had some knowledge of the game before I played with
them but they taught me work ethic and playing with some of their top
players made me what I am. It is hard to really teach this game to
someone that isn't athletic. Typically tall people are very
uncordinated and that is the complete opposite of my athletic ability.
Good luck finding someone tall. We are out there and no we don't play
basketball always.

There were 2 really tall guys in PA during that time (~'92-'98) I can
think of. One was JFK (yes, John Kennedy). He was a really good
player. About 6'4", & I believe he used to play college basketball.
Quite coordinated & athletic. There was another guy, even taller
(~6'10") also named John (forgot his last name, sorry). We called him
2D. Very tall & thin. When turned sideways, he disappeared. Very
advantageous on the field. He moved to Michigan or Minnesota. He never
really achieved the same level of talent for the game that JFK did.
Ah, memories....

really good at running in the cup which makes it hard to throw over! I

I got to play 500 on the beach with JFK, John Cunningham? and Brendan
back in 96 or so. It was fun as hell getting schooled over and over
again.

Vince Bertsch (sp? sorry Vince) played for Stanford, then Black Tide
and Condors in the 80s & 90s. Prolly 6'7". He wasn't a stand-in-the-
end-zone guy though; he was legit. Legit enough, in fact, to earn the
rock solid nickname "The Fortress." He even had a specific break
(known as "The Vince Break") named after him. I think he's still
playing out there somewhere in NoCal.

How tall is Steve Mooney? That guy was/is a stud...

For our region, I'd have to say big Tom Etchison at a modest
6'5" (plays a lot taller!). Nationals caliber player that is the key
cog to the offense of Hang Time in years past as well as Mileage in
the Masters' division.

However, I think I should start a new thread when mentioning him.

My team recruited a 7 foot tall player. This is only his 2nd semester
playing but hes getting there. His throws are coming and hes starting
to learn and understand the game better. If the disc is up high in
the air, theres nobody thats coming down with it but him. It's pretty
awesome, especially for plays right on the goal line of the endzone.
It gets hard for him to mark though because his shoulders are so high
up in the air that he can't get his hands down low enough sometimes
but hes so huge that it doens't matter because you can't see around
him.

I'd say we ought to let Cribber's opponents from that decade decide on
his level of play/skill.
Personally, I wish I had been as mediocre as Dennis, especially on
defense, especially in big games.
Cribber gets my vote for Hall of Fame some day (like I have one).

don't have.

mooney of course
cribber
lippy in his prime
big tommy
schekky
kaiser
mickey - only guy that tall that could read a disc
do those sockeye/carleton dudes count as tall enough? if they are,

i'm thinking about taller than 6'4".

i think this hits most dudes from '93-'05 when i saw all the best
players.

Steinar Cramer is 6'11" and plays for the Singapore Freakshow.
Ironically, they mostly use him as a handler, and he's an excellent
one at that.

His brother Karsten is 6'7" and also plays for the Freaks.

5'6" or under?

the cutoff for the flying dwarves of fools fest yore was 5'6.5" I
believe. they had a measuring stick to make sure you qualified, which
