Hello,

Apologies if this has been covered thoroughly before, but my searches
seem to have turned up conflicting answers.

Are detachable cleats (such as Adidas Scorch 3D
http://www.eastbay.com/catalog/productdetail.cfm?TID=5555-16170513570116130525266-0&module=sideNav&action=keywordSearch&supercat=other&sku=036009&model_nbr=51302)
allowed in most Ultimate leagues, tournaments, etc.?

I don't see why they wouldn't be, since they are just plastic, but a
friend cautioned me to look into it before I buy, and, indeed, a google
search revealed a bunch of tournaments that prohibit them.

Also, if I decide against the detachable to get molded cleats, what are
opinions on round cleats versus the more rectangular type?
(http://www.eastbay.com/catalog/productdetail.cfm?TID=5555-16170513570116130525266-0&module=shoes&action=sportsSearch&supercat=shoes&model_nbr=60622&sku=10938011&id=54434&mvp=sport&sport=all)
A salesman explained to me that the rectangular cleats absorb and move
force out to the sides, whereas round cleats absorb up, but that didn't
make sense to me.

Thanks for any input.

cheers
Bert

Hey, if you are pretty serious about getting a good quality pair of
cleats and dont mind shelling about the money, you could always look
into GAIA. They make cleats that are suppose to be designed
specifically for Ultimate.

My first pair of Gaia cleats ripped open along all the seams after
about 2 months of non-serious ultimate. They replaced them under
warranty, and those ones lasted a bit longer, but the whole process
took forever. If you're thinking about them, I'd say you should look
at Nike speed TDs instead. I hear that's what Gaia based theirs on,
and it makes sense - they've got the same cleat pattern. You might
want to check out ebay, you can get nice cleats for really cheap there
if you wear the right size.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm not sold on the Gaia cleats, partially cause I've heard about
issues with durability from others. The Nike TDs do sound / look
good....from the appearance, I take it these are detachable cleats?
Does anyone have any input as to whether detachable cleats are widely
allowed or prohibited?

Thanks much..

Can somebody recommend the best place to get Nike TD's?

Gaia has some new cleats coming out in June or July. I saw a pair
recently and they look pretty good ... sort of the soccer style with
the Speed TD cleat pattern. One would hope that they try with every
generation of cleats to solve durability issues.

Nike's Vapors (the soccer, not football, version) are good, too, I've
heard.

Bert,

For the past couple of weeks, for 2 tournaments and 7 practices, I've
been wearing a very similar cleat to the one you linked
(http://www.eastbay.com/catalog/productdetail.cfm?TID=5555-16170513570116130525266-0&module=shoes&action=sportsSearch&supercat=shoes&model_nbr=51300&sku=036011&id=54434&mvp=sport)
and I love them. Took a couple practices to break them in, but I'm
totally sold on them right now.

Peace

No. Nike Speed TDs are molded; it's the shoe that Gaia patterned its
shoe after.

But Nike makes essentially the same shoe in a detachable -- it's called
the Super Speed D (available in low or 3/4.) Best screw-ins I've ever
had, and the cleats are 100% plastic. While it's harder plastic than
the stuff they use for molded, I've never heard of a tournament
disallowing screw-ins so long as they're not metal. Can't speak for
any leagues.

I just got the Nike Speed Vapor TD's on sale from Eastbay and they're
great.

http://www.eastbay.com/catalog/productdetail.cfm?TID=5555-16170513570116130525266-0&module=sideNav&action=keywordSearch&supercat=other&sku=06884103&model_nbr=42153

They're really lightweight, really deep cleats, and a great pattern.
Apparently, however, they're designed as "game day" cleats, and not for
the rigors of practice or playing every day. If you have an older pair
of cleats that are still ok to practice in, these are great, and with
the sale are the same price as Speed TDs and I believe the same price
as the Gaias

Bert, only excessively dangerous and sharp cleats are
prohibited. Detatchable could be both or neither.

while we're ripping on gaia cleats I also had a bad experience. they
were constantly uncomfortable and ended up giving up in about 4 months
of regular use, not at all worth the price

Eastbay sometimes has good deals.

I also have 2 unused pairs I'd be willing to sell. They are both size
12, one with the detachable studs, and one with the molded cleats.
I'll sell 'em for cheaper than online. If anyone's interested, holla
back.
