There's a picture floating around out there of Leslie Calder d-ing a
Finnish player at Worlds a few years ago. Wish I had a link to it. Haven't
seen a better ulti shot since.

I was going to complain that you didn't just link to the photo you were

There is a good story behind that as well. The player is Jonno Holmes,
who is on the Australian World Games team. After catching it, he was
sailing out of bounds but managed to touch down in-bounds with his HAND
before the rest of his body landed out. Pretty spectacular.

Looks like it was probably a pretty damn good play. But a great
picture? No. You can't see the guy's face; he's the least prominent
person in the shot; you can't even tell whether the catch is made. A
well-timed capture of a spectacular layout, to be sure, but it pales in

Just something I noticed. Some layout D's are unneccesarily dangerous.
No, I don't think injury or fouls were the motivation but I'd expect a
little more restraint when committing one's body to linear motion.
Especially from the upper tier players.

Now that's a beautiful photo. To be specific it is a beautiful photo of
a beautiful play. Most of the others in this thread are either one or the
other, but not both. I think you really need both to qualify for that
subject line.

I think it has everything that I look for in a photo. [1] it's crisp and
sharp, [2] it's beautiful and draws my eye, [3] it's in focus and crisp,
[4] the faces tell a story - that story has a conflict and emotional theme
(i.e. the hero doesn't always get the disc), [4] it's crisp and in focus,
[5] the timing is very nice - some might say that a moment earlier would
have given a very different photo with unresolved conflict - but I think
this photo is every bit as good as what that would have been, [7] nice
clean background and tight depth-of-field (I'd crop much tighter...),
[6] And, lastly, this is a photo of Canadian women, and there's something
about foreign women... yup... something there.

Best Ultimate Picture......, ever? I try to stay away from statements
like that... unless I'm talking about my own photos. :^)

BTW, Thanks for including the photographer name. Somebody worked hard for
that shot. Juha deserves a credit, as do all those other shots listed in
this thread.

First off, yeah, that's Tank and although it looks like he's 5-6 feet off
the ground, he's actually 8-9 feet.

I got a kick out of your post! This "relative clarity" you mention is
actually something that lots of photographers take great pains and spend a
lot of money to avoid! So, it's kinda cool to hear what people out there
like to see. It helps to motivate photographers to experiment a little
and maybe break the norms where it's possible.

Bil is right that everyone has there own Photoshop techniques, but this
is all done with the camera. No, digital tricks or darkroom work can
bring blur into focus. To get that clarity you need to shoot for it.

Most sport photographers try to avoid this situation though, because there
are usually very distracting backgrounds (crowds, players on the sideline,
etc.) that the photographer wants to take out of the picture by blurring
them. To blur them, the photographer uses a small "depth of field"
aperture setting. This makes the range of what's in focus very narrow.
Think of it like a spotlight to make you look only at what we want
you to look at.

With the open background in the photo, Judy was able to close down that
aperture and bring everything into focus... with very nice results. Judy
Le is not just a cool lady, she's also a nice photo snapper.

So anyway, you and Judy have inspired me to play a little with this and
maybe have some fun with it. Thanks.

I can't believe these threads have gone on this long without anyone
