Presenting the latest version of the world's best (and only) Ultimate
Frisbee computer game...

Layout Ultimate 2006

I have just released the beta version of the long-anticipated sequel to
UPA Frisbee 2004, under its new, trademark-free name. Everything you
loved about the original, but now with multiplayer action to challenge
your friends over the Internet!

Please check it out at http://ultimatefrisbee.sourceforge.net/

Enjoy!

Btw, if you are interested in helping out with future versions of Layout
Ultimate, shoot me an email. It's all open source; feel free to take a
look at the Sourceforge project page at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ultimatefrisbee/.
I have very little time to work on this and hence would love to have
some help with programming or graphics, or if you feel so inclined, you
can make a monetary donation (at the project page as well).

There's another video game writting by Will D from Halifax, NS...he
wrote it a few years ago I believe, and the last time I played it, it
had multiplayer support...7on7, weather, everything...

Ok, is there any way to make "E" run and "W" walk because holding the
mouse, navigating the other guy and trying to run with my pinky (Shift)
is really hard. Thats the only thing that bugs me.

Some cool tricks:
-stand making an L with the person holding the disc, like you are
forcing one side of the field and press R right as he throw, you can
usually catch a layout D.

-If you have a disc design on your computer and want to put it in the
game open the disc2.bmp file and paste your own design in the area of
the disc, make sure its the same size. It would be cool if you had a
bank of discs in colors and designs you can choose to play with before
you start the game, doubt it would be too much extra work.

Anyways, love the game, I'd help you if I knew how, not sure how to
connect to play with other people yet...

Why in god's name is moving not WASD like EVERY OTHER GAME ON THE FACE
OF THE PLANET. ESDF is so annoying, and my fingers keep slipping off
trying to pinkie shitf and tab whiled moving. I also tend to hit the
talk button every 4 seconds. It sucks, change it.

Interesting...do you remember what it was called? Web site? Anything?

The only other Ultimate game that I have seen of was called "WUltimate",
but the web site appears to have been taken offline. Strangely, I
remember first hearing about it right after we released UPA 2004. I
suppose it is kind of iffy which of the two games came first, given that
both obviously had some history before their Internet releases...oh
well, details details. I am a bit biased so I will refrain from
comparing them :).

Oh, and for what it's worth, the physics model for Layout Ultimate/UPA
Frisbee has always incorporated wind, though it's often pretty subtle.
The wind blows in a uniform direction over the course of a game but
changes speed (supposed to be like "gusts" of wind), and the disc's
flight is accurately modeled to take the wind into account. There is a
wind-meter in the center of the little overhead field map. Also, the
leaves should tend to blow in the wind's direction. You don't quite see
the same crazy effects you see on particularly windy days in real life
since the wind's direction doesn't change in the game, though it would
be easy enough to implement that if anyone has any particular wind
patterns they'd like to see.

Also, the source code for 7 on 7 is in the game. It was done by a
couple other guys (Peter Samland and Andy Wiens from KSU) for a project
for an AI class. There are a few kinks to work out, but the option
should definitely be in the next version.

Anyway, yeah, if you remember anything more about that other game I'd be
curious to hear. Thanks.

I always find games that use wasd a pain, for 3 reasons:
-The f key has the little bump on it so it's easy to put your hand in
the right spot (hell, its the home position if you're touch-typing).
-You get extra keys around the movement keys to do more stuff. In the
case of this game you can use A and G to strafe (mainly just for the
sake of assuming a natural-looking stall pose), r to layout, v to tell
your AI teammate to guard the other guy, t to talk to your multiplayer
opponent, and (HIDDEN FEATURE) c to make the camera stop chasing you
around so you can position it wherever you want (you can move it around
with some strange combination of space, ijkl, shift, control, and the
arrow keys...don't ask me, it's unsupported!).
-I have big hands.

Oh man, this again. It's pretty cheap - I hope you don't try to use
this in multiplayer! (something I suppose I should fix at some point).

Good idea! If someone were to help us add player skins you'd be able to
do the same thing with your face, but that's a long way off for now
unless someone steps up to do it.

Thanks for the tricks and feedback!

Hey Ari, 99% sure that the game he wrote was in fact WUltimate... (W
for Will maybe? :-)

Not sure if he's coming out with a new edition...I'll have to ask him
about it...if I can track down the game, I'll upload the file to my
website so that people can download it and try it out...too bad
Easports wouldn't make an ultimate game as a fun project...

If anyone does, can they add a skin of Frank's face?

it'd be better if the fronts and backs of players were different
colors.
