I read some people on this group want to add gimmicks to the game of
ultimate to make it more spectator friendly. I completely disagree
with the concept of giving people something else to focus on rather
than the game itself. I read an article today about starting a
franchise in Philly and took out this excerpt regarding gimmicks in
sports (american sports in particular), and have to agree 100%:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Union’s best shot of establishing a flagship franchise and a
strong tradition would be to decline the gimmicks and keep the focus
on the players on the field and the supporters. Create a simple,
elegant stadium backdrop to let the game explain itself to newcomers
and allow longtime fans to enjoy the match without the tawdry
sideshow.

Ironically, this would be unique. With one possible exception, Veit
seems to be heading in this direction.

“We’re going to present the game in a traditional fashion,” said Veit.
“People say, what’s your mascot going to be at home? We don’t have a
mascot. I’m not going to have some guy in a stuffed Benjamin Franklin
suit flying a kite because we think that will be cool.”

Cheerleaders?

“No,” said Veit. “It’s not soccer.”

Marching bands?

“We’re not going to have a marching band.”

Mummers are the heart and soul of a lot of Philadephia (and Southern
NJ) .... everyone should spend one New Years Day on Broad Street
watching the underdog strut their stuff with their home folks.

Speaking of which ... is not Philadelphia the most underacheiving of
all the major club Ultimate markets? Many leagues, many players but
only fluke appearances on Saturaday play (AMP and old guys aside)

no one is talking about doing anything ultimate related in
phili......they are just talking about soccer......and its rich
"tradition". unfortunately for spirit zealots that "tradition" does
not include allowing players to participate in the rule enforcement
process. yea......soccer was smart enough to shelf all that
gentelmans game shit only after 30 years of idiocy........and this was
way back in the 1800's. so ya got to figure that in todays woprld it
would have taken less than half that time to "wise up"
