Here in the middle of Bowl Season.......Wilmington NC will hold it's
annual WUFF BOWL, New Years Day at NOON at Castle Hayne Park just
north of Wilmington.

This event has been going on for years....since...98-ish?.....
The first was freezing cold and was attended by about 9 people and
about as many dogs.

Three or four years later...anakin was walking...maybe in 2001 or
02...the weather was beautiful, warm and sunny....we had tons of
people show up, including folks that made the trip down from ECU/
Greenville NC.
That year...the dark team had a killer come from behind victory...

I've only been out a handful of times since then....but i'm OFF WORK
TOMORROW and ready to battle!

YOU are invited to attend!

and saturday....double header in the Weddle Frisbee
League!....doah...Winter Frisbee League!
WFL RULES!

want to do the same? have you guys made an adjustments to the
original plan since its implimentation???? what are the keys to

---using players as observers.....it's working very super well.
they've made good active line calls that certainly saved some debate
time.
they've kept the time between points so when we've had double headers,
all the games were completed.

insights that would help other leagues that might want to try the UOA
League Observer System(LOS?).....just do it!
start the program. there's nothing super complicated or weird.
JUST DO IT.

adjustments to the plan.....nope.
the plan is super simple...each team is required to give an observer
each half...and they have.
simple.
i spend most of my time during the games, making sure that the
observers get more and more comfortable as THEIR half goes on.
the only real tough part, as with ALL observers, is getting the timing
issues down.
we haven't even really told everyone what hand signals we're looking
for.....we just tell them as THEIR half goes along.
we hope that folks will pick it up a bit at a time and that eventually
folks will have learned a bit BEFORE it's their turn to take a half.
i try to show the handsignals as they are called for during the course
of each half....and each time i try to get the 'volunteer' observer do
it better and with better mechanics.
if they don't get it perfect...who cares! ...they're just volunteers
after all.
However...we have recruited a bunch of new observers for the UOA
Spring Tournaments already.
4 new guys have joined the UOA....and honestly...i see the observer
program as a builder of bridges between folks that might not normally
interact out at league play......
the League Observer System(LOS????) is paying off in tons of ways.

keys to making it work?
simply doing it.
and having a couple weirdos around that will take the time to help
brand new observers out a bit....some freaks that will take the time
to teach new observers about the time limits and how to warn the
teams.....and who will teach a couple handsignals a half.......

it's weird...and cool.
the volunteers are doing real well.
