Monsanto
Canada expands its curling sponsorship
---------------------------------
…The Canadian Curling Association (CCA)
today announced that Monsanto Canada has signed a new, long-term sponsorship
agreement which will significantly expand its current involvement in one of
Canada’s most popular sports.
Monsanto will become the Presenting
Sponsor of the 2007 and 2008 Continental Cups, the 2009 Tim Hortons Canadian
Curling Trials and its pre-Trials qualifier and the 2010 Tim Hortons
Brier. The company will also be a Diamond Sponsor for the 2008 Scotties
Tournament of Hearts.
This increased sponsorship by Monsanto is in
addition to its current role as the Presenting Sponsor of the Tim Hortons Brier,
a three-year deal (through 2009) that was previously announced in March of 2006
in Regina, when it first became the presenting sponsor for the Canadian men’s
curling championship.
“This is a tremendous commitment by Monsanto to our
premier curling events,” said Warren Hansen, Manager of Event Operations and
Media for the Canadian Curling Association. “We’re thrilled that Monsanto has
decided to make such a significant, long-term investment. It
certainly bodes well for the future of these events and curling in
general.”
The 2007 Continental Cup of Curling will be held in Medicine
Hat, Alberta, December 13-16. The unique, four-day competition, billed as
curling’s answer to golf’s Ryder Cup, brings together six teams representing
North America and six teams representing Europe. Medicine Hat also
previously hosted the 2004 Continental Cup, which attracted an event record
crowd of over 40,000.
Since the Continental Cup began in 2002,
Team North America and Team Europe have each won twice. The site and dates
for the 2008 Continental Cup have not yet been confirmed.
The 2008
Scotties Tournament of Hearts will be played in Regina, February 16-24 at the
Brandt Centre at Ipsco Place while the 2008 Tim Hortons Brier will be staged
March 8-16 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg. Dates and sites for the
2009 and 2010 Tim Hortons Brier and 2009 Trials have yet to be
announced.
“Our association with the CCA, the sport of curling and the
players who make the game what it is has been nothing but positive,” said Trish
Jordan, public affairs lead with Monsanto Canada. “As an agricultural company,
it makes so much sense for us to support curling because it is enthusiastically
embraced by our farm customers and our employees across the country. It also
gives us the opportunity to expand our relationship with our customers in a
social setting and enhances the awareness of Monsanto and our branded
products. We are very pleased to make this long-term commitment to curling
in Canada and look forward to sharing the experience with our customers and our
employees.”
As the event presenting sponsor, the Monsanto brand is
incorporated into the event logo, in addition to in-ice signage, rinkboards,
scoreboards and hack signs. There are also numerous hosting
opportunities for the company’s customers and employees at the various
events.
Monsanto is an agricultural company and a recognized world leader
in providing agricultural technology, seed, and crop protection products to its
farm customers. It offers Canadian farmers a full line of canola, corn and

the Roundup® brand herbicides that have been instrumental in helping farmers
reduce tillage and adopt more sustainable farming practices.
Monsanto Canada - which first became involved in Canadian curling as a
Diamond Sponsor of the 2001 Canadian Curling Trials in Regina - is based in
Winnipeg, Manitoba. Its 300 Canadian employees are part of the larger, global
Monsanto family headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, with over 17,000 employees
worldwide.
The new sponsorship agreement also gives Monsanto Canada the
contractual option to continue its presenting sponsorship status for the 2010,
2011 and 2012 Continental Cups, 2011 and 2012 Briers and 2013 Canadian Curling
Trials and its pre-event qualifier.
