Can somebody post a link to the supposed audio recording of Agnew, Johnston
and Botham's leg-over in TMS? It was supposedly very funny.

----------------------------
Agnew did not win cricketing greatness, he did achieve broadcasting
immortality at the Oval in 1991 when, in the company of Brian
Johnston, the pair reduced themselves - and the listening nation - to
tears of hilarity via a slice of radio history which stands comparison
with The Goon Show or Hancock's Half Hour.

"It wasn't my line," Aggers admitted. "I stole it from John Etheridge
of The Sun who told me, `I know what our headline will be tomorrow -
Ian Botham cocks it up by not getting his leg over'. Anyway, bad light
stopped play and we had to fill in for a long time with replays;
Johnners was being slightly naughty - as only he could be - about the
incident when Botham had to straddle the stumps and I thought boof,
I'll give it to him - `he didn't quite get his leg over'. There was a
lovely pause for about 10 seconds while it sank in then Johnners was
gone.

"I knew he'd laugh but I didn't think it would actually have the
effect on him it did. He couldn't speak and the whole thing descended
into chaos. At the end of it all, Brian was seriously cross with
himself because he'd lost it. I walked out of the Oval that day - and
remember it was my first year with the Beeb - thinking, `It probably
wasn't very clever to have done that'.

"Of course, it was on the breakfast programmes the following day and
everyone took it in the right spirit. I suppose I was lucky in a way
because it helped establish me, not necessarily as a cricket
correspondent, but as someone who liked a bit of a laugh which I think
you need on the programme. It broke the ice between me and the
listeners."

The Aggers and Johnners laugh-in cut no ice with Test Match Special
producer Peter Baxter, however, who promptly separated the deadly duo
like naughty schoolboys and banned them from working together
henceforth. "Then the messages started pouring in from listeners
demanding we be reunited so Peter plucked up the courage to allow us
to reply to the letters one day during a tea break at Old Trafford the
next summer.

"We succeeded in playing it all pretty straight-faced until I reached
the very last one at the bottom of the pile. The umpires were coming
down and I remember saying, `right, Johnners, why is it that fielders
have to appeal; why don't the umpires just give batsmen out on their
own?' And when I saw the signature at the bottom I thought, `oh, God,
here we go'. So all I said was, `it's from Berkshire', stifling a
giggle.

"Johnners said, `let's have a look then', and the name was William H
Tit. He completely disintegrated, I went as well, and there was utter
silence for about 20 seconds save for Johnners wheezing in the
background. He had to be led out of the commentary box and Trevor
Bailey had to step into the breach. Johnners actually wrote a letter
of apology to Mr Tit but we never did get a reply."

Johnners, alas, is no longer around to raise a titter, but with Aggers
at the microphone the forthcoming Ashes series will no doubt provide
many such moments of hilarity. "People don't want pomposity, they like
it when you take the mickey out of yourself. I think they want you to
be approachable and friendly. Some things you do work, some don't, but
at least the listeners know you're trying.

"Now we have e-mail so people can join in even more quickly. During
the last Test match the bails fell off and we then entered this
incredible discussion which lasted for five days about lignum vitae -
which I'd never heard of before - this ridiculous wood that sinks.

"The kind of things people were e-mailing in about this stuff was
incredible; they make the heads of croquet mallets out of it, Sir
Walter Raleigh's bowls were made out of it. It's the kind of surreal
discussion that can only happen on that programme. The audience is
intelligent, the audience is fun, and the audience knows there's a lot
more to Test Match Special than simply cricket."

I listened to it, and what was funny about it was Johnston going into
giggles and going on saying "Aggers do stop it". Just listening to Aggers'
legover comment wasn't very funny, maybe because it is probably some sort of
british humour which a non-briton like me will not understand at the first
go. To the british guys out here, if you heard that blooper what were your
reactions?

Jonathan Agnew, attempting to broadcast from an underground car park.
When he arrived in Johannesburg, he discovered he would have to file
his preview of the forthcoming Test from a broadcasting point, which
was situated in an underground car park. Abuses galore!

So what is so funny about the word "leg-over"? Sorry, for being so thick,
but it seems to have a peculiarly british meaning.

London slang for "to have sexual intercourse - he got his leg over."

Incidentally, if you haven't seen the video, you may not get the reference
to Botham's shot. He got a nasty bouncer, lost his balance and was about to
fall backwards, when he decided to hop over the stumps [in order not to get
out hit wicket]. He just about managed to jump over the stumps, but one of
his legs knocked a bail off and he was out. Very funny.

Cheers
Arun

I could imagine the incident alright. It is just that I did not know why
"legover" was so funny. Thanks for the link.

Not even London slang.

I remember at school in England (for those who are curious this was in
Writtle, Essex) singing a scottish folk song that was over 200 years old
then. This was about somebody named "Willy" who was "the pride of the west".
The chorus went (IIRC) "Roll your leg over mine
"Willy, my willy-o
"In your arms let me twine
"Willy my love"

We never got through the song without a hearty outburst of tittering.

Check this web page out with the pic of Botham when he couldn't quite
get his leg over and the transcript of the TMS program talking about
the incident.
