Shane Bond announces retirement from Test cricket

http://www.grownups.co.nz/news_weather/show_news_item?id=2515015

I mainly remember him for his top-rate bowling in the 2002 series
against India and for occasional performances against Australia.
However, there was way too much time off for injuries.

Good luck to him.

Regards,
Jayen

Apologies for being a wet blanket, but I'm not a big fan of people retiring
multiple times.

Was the previous time during the ICL engagement?

What do you think he wanted to retire? Give the man a break please.

Too much time wondering whether he wanted to play or not. Who comes
back after retiring? Fools.

You are being very harsh indeed on Shane Bond. He is/was a huge talent
who was let down by his fragile body.

No, he had already retired from Test cricket before joining the ICL. The
speech was almost the same - I have realised that most of injuries occur
whilst playing Test cricket so I'm giving that up.

Perhaps it's dyslexia: He might be retrying.

He actually did pretty well in his comeback. Unfortunately, he broke
down as a result - again - and had to retire - again.

In any event, he was clearly NZ's best bowler since Hadlee (and quite
possibly 2nd best ever), but without the skeletal structure to match
his talent.

Good player but prone to injury. I guess really fast bowlers like Bond
and Akhtar can't play for long. For however long he played he gave
100% and won NZ a lot of matches.

The Nellie Melba of cricket. Maybe a dessert will be named in his
memory.

Love the way he played - whether or not he has justified coming back
to Test cricket after giving it up or not I have no idea. You just
don't do it.

Do you think he returned on a whim? Obviously he thought, and was
probably given advice that he was able to return. Clearly he was wrong
or the advice was wrong. Just seems as if some posters think he was
messing people around. I am sure this was not the case.

He seems like a decent bloke and I have no desire to cast aspersions on his
character. However the fact remains that he stated when signing for the ICL
in January 2008 that even if he hadn't gone to that circus he would have
retired from playing Tests anyway, owing to injury problems.

I just think that if he was going to throw in the towel after one injury
then it wasn't worth coming back at all in Test matches.

But isn't that with the benefit of hindsight? It hardly seems likely
that Bond knew he was going to break down again after just one test.
I'd say damn good on him for at least being prepared to give it a go,
short-lived though it ultimately turned out to be.

That aside, it clearly was 'worth coming back' for just one match -
without that one match out of him, NZ would have lost the series 1-0
to Pakistan -:)
