It is difficult to assess the correct proportion because nobody has yet
managed to translate Symonds's comments into intelligible English.
Andrew
WTF are you talking about Dungford (TM)?
As opposed to the calm lucidity of the interviewers?

and lets not forget all the unsavoury comments Roy and HG have made
publicly about New Zealanders. Hell they are on TV (the very ones
critising Symonds), paid megabucks and dammit kids look up to them as
role models.
Hypocritical media?

ah, i suddenly see all of the comments made by dechucka, cdk, will-s

"If you lose the big game, that little boy is gonna die faster than Steve

Not knowing the show, it had occurred to me as I listened
to the clip that it was meant to be funny -- rather like
Stephen Colbert outrighting the right on his show on
Comedy Central in the U.S. How else to take the hosts'
suggestion early in the interview that it be made a crime
to criticize great Australian cricketers, or that Hayden
had won thousands of matches for Australia, or even the
introduction of Symonds as a "great"? (Between you and
me, I laughed at several points in the clip -- but then
serious rightwing talk radio in the U.S. also makes me
laugh.)
Then what was Symonds doing taking every suggestion so
solemnly? Is he even less endowed upstairs than we had
thought (hard to believe), or is he the greatest straight
man in the history of comedy?
Not suggesting for a moment that Kiwis are generally are a grim and
humourless breed who are only known to crack a smile when an opposition
ruggeroid cracks a rib, but I can only think of two that have made good
outside the Land of the Long Wide Yawn. Them being John Clarke & Tony
Martin. Are there any others?

Yep, I distinctly recall them hand-drawing a headline for the NZ press at a
recent Olympics. 'Bronze Rush!' Disgraceful.

It's impossible for me to believe that he wouldn't know about Roy & HG
so I'd assume he's just playing along.

The Gymnastics commentaries at the 2004 olympics being the best thing
I think they've done.
Symonds was certainly relled in, hook line & sinker by a couple of
consummate radio pros. Which did I guess make him the perfect straight
man for their preposterous over-the-top show. The Stephen Colbert
out-loonying the US ultra-conservatives analogy is probably a fair
comparison to what HG & Roy do on the air with Aussie sports. A still
partly lit Symonds was liking stealing candy from a baby for them.
They really should consider enacting child abuse laws in Australia.

Imo that'd be their SoO calls, especially in the 80's. These are to sport
what Sir Les Patterson is to the Yartz. They belong in Oz's Call of Fame.

I've never heard of Tony Martin.
As a general rule, Kiwis are a grim and humourless breed who laugh only at
Australian misfortune.
Still, at least we know we're not funny. I haven't seen much of these Roy &
HG blokes, but most Australian 'comedy' I have encountered was about as
funny as the black death. Apart from your cricket team in the mid-80s, of
course.
Andrew
These guys haven't cracked it internationally yet, but they're very
big in NZ.
I doubt whether anyone actually cares much about the comment itself -
it's the fact that he was on radio, drunk, being a complete fuckwit
and not using his brain (whether that's possible is debatable, huh).
Calling someone a lump of shit on radio isn't the best thing for
public image.
One of my best mates went to school with him in Queensland - they had
to change the rules when Symonds left because he wouldn't have been
able to say he'd passed high school (year 10) without having passed
any of the exams he failed.
There's also a good one about CA calling him to make sure he was going
to some cricket dinner - he said his wife had 'RSPCA'ed back a couple
of weeks ago. The reason why he went home early from the 2001 ashes
series is also rather yumourous - his wife had found his little black
book and threatened him with divorce. They broke up when he caught
her with another bloke months later. All true stories.
Fuck that's depressing for you - we've got an unreal country with
everything you could ask for and you've got... Dave Dobbyns? Not too
many Australians feel unfortunate with all the liberties we are
afforded. Life is fantastic. Cheer up, little brother - you guys can
knock about with the big boys when you take things a bit less
seriously.

I'd have to agree with you. I think NZ comedy sux. The only decent
comedian we've ever had was Billy T James (RIP). He made me laugh but
since he died I can't recall anyone of any value.
Australian comedy on the other hand is EXCELLENT. Through the 80s with
the Comedy Company and its many spinoffs right up to that guy who
dressed up as Osama Bin Laden and gate crashed the Apec Summit. Oh
yeah, and let's not forget Kerry O'Keefe. Superb!

LOL! I had a lot of trouble understanding Roy in this clip and I
typically don't have any problem with Australian accent.
Since I'm not familiar with the parlance or the nuances of
austalinglish, can someone help with why he sounds different? Is his
a working class (read uneducated) accent, is it a regional accent, or
was he simply drunk?

Barry Humphries- of course
Shaun Micallef (although his latest TV offering was extremely
disappointing)
Magda Szubanski
Perhaps also Max Gillies (an impressionist)
are brilliant comedians.
Graeme Bond, Gary Mcdonald, Jane Turner and Gina Riley (of Kath and
Kim), Will Anderson, and Gary Connolly are all quite good.

Actually Flight of the Conchords- that's their best joke so it would
be criminal to miss that play on words- you see they play music, hence
'chords'
He speaks Strine FYI
Oh. So it's not because they crash'n'burn then?

That'd be Gerry Connolly and Wil Anderson.
Magda Szubinski
Marg Downey
The Chaser crew
Judith Lucy
Mick Molloy
Glenn Robbins
Mike Veitch
Billy Birmingham
Eric Bana

To be honest, they aint too bad. Even if you don't like them,
crash'n'burn wouldn't be the way to describe them- they have that
extremely laconic NZ sense of humour (yes I am familiar with it, but
not that familiar with it- have heard enough John Clarke to recognize
it)- even more laconic than ours.
Clive James is brilliant- but I don't think of him as a comedian-
although that is in a sense one of the things he does. He is an
intellectual- Germs is also very funny (but not usually intentionally)

You were obviously fond of D-Gen and Fast Forward and shows like that-
yes they were often quite funny.
Certainly much better than the Paul Hogan style of non-humour, which
doesn't bear viewing now- I tried once.
Mind you Crocodile Dundee is still watchable- if not really funny.

He certainly got fined.
